Now in its 44th year, this course reviews the most recent developmentsand current controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particularemphasis will be placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicingphysician. The course will include:Didactic Lectures – Clinically active faculty from the Department ofMedicine will emphasize recent clinical advances.Year-in-Review Literature Reviews – Faculty will review major articlesfrom the general medical specialty literature with immediate importance toclinical practice.Clinical Dilemmas – In addition to case presentations to illustrate currentmanagement strategies, a special session on clinical problem-solving willbe included.Questions and Answers – Ample time will be provided for specificquestions and discussions of problems commonly encountered by courseparticipants.Internal Medicine Topics – Areas to be covered include cardiology,hematology and oncology, general internal medicine, pulmonary andcritical care, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, andrheumatology.Multidisciplinary Topics – Additional topics of interest to the practicinginternist will include issues in women’s health, geriatrics, emergency &hospital medicine, and neurology.Advances in Internal Medicine is presented by the Department of Medicine and is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis course is designed for practicing internists, family practitioners, and otherprimary care health professionals. It is also appropriate for hospitalists who wish to stay current on recent developments in internal medicine beyond theinpatient setting.

The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinicianpractice in internal medicine. We specifically anticipate improvements in skillsand strategies to:• Apply new knowledge to better manage commonly encountered chronicmedical problems such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and obstructive lung disease, as well as acute conditions such as sexuallytransmitted infections and musculoskeletal injuries.

• Bring practice patterns more in line with current evidence and guidelines with respect to atrial fibrillation, cancer screening, adult vaccination,anticoagulation management, and preoperative medical evaluation.

• Improve competence in the management of common problems traditionallytreated by specialists, such as heart failure, HIV infection, end-of-life care,Parkinson’s Disease, rheumatologic disorders, as well as recognize theindications for referral to a subspecialist.
