You don’t need cash to enrol on a course. Tuition fee loanscover university or college tuition fees and are paid direct tothe university or college by Student Finance England. Theyare available to all eligible students regardless of householdincome. The amount you pay back is dependent on howmuch you earn and not how much you owe and you won’tneed to start paying them back until you are earning morethan £21,000 per year. After thirty years, outstanding loanamounts are written off. You will need to makearrangements for your loan as soon as you’ve applied for a place. For more information, visit www.studentfinance-yourfuture.direct.gov.uk

Theamount available to each student depends on householdincome and whether or not you’re living at home or instudent accommodation. For more information, visit www.gov.uk/student-finance

LOAN REPAYMENTS

You must pay back Tuition Fee Loans andMaintenance Loans. You pay interest on these. Youdon’t have to pay back other student finance, e.g.grants and bursaries. Your repayments are linked toyour income. You only make repayments when yourincome is over £21,000 a year. If your income dropsbelow this amount, repayments stop. Part timestudents sometimes start repayments while they’restill studying. Each month you pay back 9% of anyincome over £21,000.

WORK BASED LEARNING WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

NIKKI PHENNAHNikki gained a 1st class honoursdegree in Visual Merchandising andPromotional Design (approved byUCLan), despite taking time off fromthe degree course to look after her dadwho had terminal cancer. She also hada young family and worked part time!

NIKKI SAID:“I’m now working asa project manager atiCCOMMODATE. Imanage a smallportfolio of studentproperties, designing

and renovating their interiors. I alsoproduce the marketing material for thecompany, using the skills I learned onmy degree and I do some freelancegraphic design. The degree definitelyhelped with what I’m doing now. TheAutoCAD and Google Sketch Up skillsI gained mean I’m able to produceplans and evaluations to help potentialclients visualise the interiors. Studyingon the degree gave me moreconfidence to network within theindustry too. In fact, one of the mainthings that attracted me to the coursewas the industry links they have. Somany opportunities have opened up forme since my final project and thesupport I received while on my coursewas amazing.”

We believe that employability is a central focus within all our highereducation programmes and we put the achievement and success of ourstudents at the heart of everything we do. We aim to give each and everyone of our students the best possible chance of joining, and sustaining, their chosen career path. This applies equally to full time students, and tothose on part time study routes who are already combining work andstudy. Every one of our new and existing programmes is designed by ateam of academic specialists from the University Centre and our PartnerUniversities, working closely alongside experts from within the professionor industry concerned. That way, students can be sure that the course isacademically strong, and meets the needs of the people who may befuture employers.

10 DEGREESThe new FdA / BA Hons Degrees each have a strong element withinthem which is designed to encourage opportunities for commercialenterprise as part of the delivery of the courses, the student experienceand the ethos of the qualifications themselves. As part of your coursethese projects are intended to give you the opportunity to be involved inthe running and contributing to a working business which will developyour commercial experience and a sense of enterprise in order tosupport you when you will leave your course to find employment or besuccessfully self employed.

WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTWork experience placement - defined by HEFCE (Higher EducationFunding Council for England) as an organised period of work for anemployer either paid or unpaid - can take place outside the University oras part of the course delivery time and should have learning outcomesrelated to the programme of study.

PRACTICE BASED PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGDefined as learning which is explicitly designed to relate to professionalpractice standards. It includes learning which is work-based, undertakenin placements and which aims to enhance learners' employability.

WORKING TOWARDS EMPLOYMENTThe majority of our students are not simply learning their subject in order to get a qualification, but are aiming for a careerin that field. We, therefore, understand the importance of making sure we are helping to prepare our undergraduates forthe world of work. We ensure that employability skills are embedded into all of our programmes and we have strong linkswith both local and national employers. This means that students take part in live briefs, are visited by guest lecturers andindustry experts and go on visits to employers’ own sites. Many of our alumni return to the Hugh Baird University Centreas guest speakers, passing on their experience and advice to the next generation.

EMPLOYERENDORSEMENTIKEAInternational home furnishing retailer IKEA works closely with the programme team for theVisual Merchandising and Promotional Design courses, which are approved by UCLan. Elliot Higgins, Communication and Interior Design Manager at IKEA Group, said:

In recent years, we’ve employed two graduates from the Hugh Baird University Centre, Emma Livesey andSharon Hay. Both have been fantastic examples of employability and are already proving themselves withinIKEA. Emma is currently on an international project in Japan which, for someone only in the business twoyears, goes to show how prepared she was for the position. In today’s competitive jobs market, anything thatmakes a candidate stand out from the crowd at interview is invaluable and the experience the undergraduatesgain on the degree course here definitely adds to that employability. Determination is also a key factor; bothEmma and Sharon displayed great motivation and drive and knew exactly what they wanted from their careerwhen they left university.

LIVERPOOL CITY REGION LOCAL ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIPPam Wilsher, Head of Visitor Economy DevelopmentLiverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership

Our City Region’s Visitor Economy goes from strength to strength. 56 million visitors are attracted each yearand they spend £3.4bn in the local economy which supports 46,000 jobs. Opportunities abound for those withthe right aptitude and attitude for a career in the hospitality industry. I was delighted to welcome the L20 HotelSchool as a provider of excellent hospitality training benefitting from great new facilities and a strongleadership team who will inspire the next generation of chefs and restaurant staff. It’s wonderful to see thatthe aspirations of the young people joining the L20 Hotel School are being further raised by the expandinghigher education provision at the Hugh Baird University Centre, offering routes to even more careeropportunities in the hospitality sector and beyond. The new provision directly addresses some of thechallenges and skills gaps highlighted in the Visitor Economy Skills for Growth Agreement such as chefingskills, customer service and promoting tourism as a first choice career.
