• A cotutelle doctoral program offers you the opportunity to complete your doctoral studies at the University of Ottawa as well as at another university abroad. You are jointly supervised by a thesis supervisor at each institution and you attend the two universities alternately.
• You take only one comprehensive examination and defend your thesis only once before a jury chosen by the two partner universities. Once you have completed your doctoral program, each university confers a separate degree.

PURPOSE OF COTUTELLE DOCTORAL PROGRAM
• The purpose of the cotutelle doctoral program is to consolidate and improve the education of our doctoral students, to support scientific co operation between research teams at the University of Ottawa and at other partner universities, and to promote mobility of doctoral students.

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
THESIS SUPERVISORS
• The doctoral student takes courses and carries out research under the supervision of the two thesis supervisors at the partner universities. The supervisors may have already worked together (for example, on research projects, joint publications, seminars, lectures and scientific exchanges); if this is not the case, the cotutelle doctoral program will help establish this co-operation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM OF STUDY
• With the doctoral student, the thesis supervisors define the student’s program of study (academic requirements, courses and seminars, comprehensive examination) and the periods of residency at each university.
• These points are set out in the cotutelle doctoral program agreement that is drawn up for each student using a generic agreement form. This agreement constitutes a legal contract and is therefore binding on all the parties.

PROGRAM ARRANGEMENT
• A cotutelle doctorate program may be initiated either by the student or the thesis supervisor. In establishing a cotutelle, various steps have to be taken by the actors involved in the process.

THESIS
• The thesis is defended only once, at the student’s home university—either the University of Ottawa or the partner university outside Ontario—before a jury selected from among scientists designated as peers by the two partner universities. However, it does not include the two thesis supervisors.
• Protection of the thesis topic, as well as publication, use and protection of research results are subject to the regulations in effect at each partner university in the cotutelle doctoral program.

DIPLOMAS
• On completion of the doctoral studies, the student receives two diplomas, each noting the cotutelledoctoral program with the partner university.

COTUTELLE DOCTORAL PROGRAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA: SOME STATISTICS
• In recent years, cotutelle program agreements have emerged mainly in Europe, and have become increasingly popular in the countries of La Francophonie.
• At the University of Ottawa, this practice is more recent: the University adopted a cotutelle doctoral program policy in late 2008. Some 10 cotutelle program agreements have been signed and are currently in effect; and almost the same amount are in preparation. As word gets out about this arrangement, its popularity increases.
