Boy, my time as commander has gone fast! I had a lot of fun and was honored to be surrounded by a great group of people. They made the theme of the year clear — camaraderie. Our members are fabulous and we want to keep it that way!

One standout area of Main Line’s achievements this past year has been attracting new members. We had a fabulous turnout (16) for the New Member Party on Jan. 27, when we honored Bill and Deb Northey and David and Marybeth Moretti, who were at the party. We also welcome Stan and Laura Allen, Vincent and Angela Crognale, Jeff and Debbie Rosa, Clifford and Patty Shaw and our newest new members — Minshall Painter and Tamara Waters. As of Jan. 29 we have 109 members.

I will be instituting a Mentoring Program to pair each new member with a mentor with a similar kind of boat -- power or sail. The mentor is someone who would connect with the new member, perhaps calling to ask, “How are you doing?” or “Would you like to join us for the dinner meeting?”

During the past year, we’ve had a lot of participation in squadron activities, starting with the skit meetings for the 2017 D5 Spring Conference in Ocean City, MD. Because we were to be the main host of the Fall Educational Conference in King of Prussia, we brought a little Valley Forge into the skit.

We moved the Summer Kick-Off Party in June from the Bay to Patti and Frank Visichs’ Knarf Tiki Bar. Although it was raining, we were under cover and had a good time with outstanding food.

For the summer cruise — always the season’s highlight — we went Hawaiian, with great boat crawls and fun games on the beach. Staying two days at each stop left more time to socialize and relax.

It rained the whole day of the Commander’s Picnic, until the party was about to start. Then the rain stopped and the sun came out.

The BBQ at Great Oak Landing was also a great success. What stories!! Our traditional September Ex-Com at Schaefer’s Canal House was again a good time. Maybe next year more people will come by boat and stay at Chesapeake City Marina.

We were the main hosts at the October D5 Fall Educational Conference in King of Prussia. What a success!! We had tremendous participation from our members.

In November I instituted an informal dinner get together – let’s make this a tradition.

Thanks to Patti and Frank Visich, the holiday party at Glenhardie Country Club was a smashing success! Tenor Carl serenaded us throughout dinner. Patti’s Twelve Days of Christmas singalong got everyone involved. Santa even stopped by.

At the February 7 Ex-Com meeting we will consider options for donating the money we would have spent on Pollyanna gifts to help a squadron affected by the fall hurricanes.

Thanks to you, our members’ camaraderie spans oceans!

Mark your calendar: CoW, conference, cruise

    Executive Officer Lt/C John Beardsley

Plans are proceeding for the 2018 Commander’s Cruise, July 13-22. The marinas we’re visiting are all north of the Bay Bridge, with stops at Baltimore Yacht Club, Great Oak Landing, Baltimore, and Rock Hall. Russ and Barb Jones have been working hard to arrange for the marina reservations and plan the activities. See itinerary and reserve your slip on Page 16.

The stops are easily accessible to nonboaters and people who may not be able to join us for the entire week. Both weekends of the cruise will be in the Rock Hall/ Chestertown area, which is easy to reach by car and which has many hotels and B and Bs.

The District 5 Spring Conference will be April 6-8 at the Princess Royale Hotel in Ocean City, MD. Main Line will again host a Friday night hospitality room.

The first planning meeting for the hospitality room was held on Jan. 21. While plans are not final, this year’s Friday night activity will feature four tables offering tasks and activities centered on the Seamanship, Weather, Cruise Planning, and Piloting classes.

We need squadron members to volunteer to monitor the tables. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for 2 pm on Feb. 18 at our home, 207 Chandler Dr., West Chester. Please plan to attend this session.

I also encourage everyone to attend the spring conference. If you’ve never been there, you’re missing out on a lot of fun.

Since the hotel now requires us to rent our hospitality room Friday and Saturday nights, we plan to use it as a gathering place for members all weekend. It will have snacks and beverages for members on Friday, then coffee and juice will be available Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Mark your calendar and RSVP for the Change of Watch on March 17 at the Downingtown Country Club. We will honor our outgoing Commander, Lisa Fegan, and install the incoming Bridge. I am honored to be Main Line’s incoming Commander. My Bridge and I are planning a host of activities. I believe that people join our squadron for the boater education, then stay for the fun because they find a group of nice people who share their interests.

Susan and I will be on vacation during the February Ex-Com meeting, but I plan to release the next year’s calendar at the March
Ex-Com meeting. In the meantime, Go Eagles!

    Learning options abound this spring

Twelve students are learning Seamanship at home and in some classes this spring. Four of them are also taking the option to receive the America’s Boating Club boating safety education certificate.

We are offering Piloting through Chester County Night School for eight Tuesday nights, 7-9 pm, starting March 20 at Peirce Middle School in West Chester.

New boaters can take the introductory America’s Boating Course through Chester County Night School 7-9 pm on eight Mondays, starting April 2 at Phoenixville Middle School. This will be an expanded course featuring dedicated nights for VHF radio, how to read a chart and knot tying.

To register for the America’s Boating Course and for Piloting, go to www.chestercountynightschool.org.

Additional one-day America’s Boating Course classes are being scheduled for some Saturdays at Clews & Strawbridge and Stoltzfus boating dealers in April and May. Classes last eight hours.

This is an opportunity to introduce some of your friends to boating, or sharpen your piloting skills. Contact me for details about any of the classes at [email protected].

Whether you are visiting Rock Hall to relax and enjoy the scenery or for one of the many town events, Rock Hall Landing

Marina features full-fingered floating docks with 75 deep water slips available for seasonal and transient berthing. Each slip has full electric, water, free WiFi. Pumpout is available. We can accommo-date transient vessels up to 130 ft. We also offer an on-site pool. Enjoy the quaint charm of Rock Hall — we’re the closest marina to town so it’s an easy walk or bike ride away.

Sign up for lots of activities this springNow that the holiday season is over, we

can start an exciting new year. We had a great turnout for the January

dinner meeting. Capt. Dave Tamimie, USCG, retired, recounted his childhood in Iraq and his family’s escape and resettlement in Illinois. He said he was unsure what he wanted to do with his life, but joining the ROTC was “like a fish to water,” and the beginning of a distinguished career in the Navy and then the Coast Guard.

Our next dinner meeting will be Feb. 15 at Peppers Italian Restaurant in King of Prussia. We’ll elect officers, and Elaine Schaefer, executive director of the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area, will describe the organization and how it works to protect the river and the people who live along it. The signup sheet is on Page 8 .

Don’t forget to sign up for the Greater Philadelphia Boat Show March 9-11 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. We need volunteers to help staff our booth and introduce people to boating, the Virtual Trainer, and our squadron. Use the link on the flyer on Page 11 to sign up. You’ll get free admission to the show, and many shifts are available. Hope to see you there!

I am excited to share that the Change of Watch (CoW) will be on Saturday, March 17, at Downingtown Country Club. We will honor outgoing commander Lisa Fegan, who has done a great job this year and install our new officers.
P/D/C Marty Lafferty, AP, will represent District 5 at the ceremony. We will also present trophies and plaques to squadron members who have contributed so much. That signup is on Page 10.

In April, author Dotty Brown will be the speaker at the dinner meeting at Peppers Restaurant in King of Prussia. Her book, Boathouse Row, details the history of crew and Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Ms. Brown is a former editor and reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer. See the signup on Page 14.

Last, I would like to thank each of you for helping me during my term as the Administrative Officer for MLSPS. I have had a great time and could not have done everything that we did as a club without your help!

So, to everyone, a huge THANK YOU!Capt. David Tamimie and his wife, Rose, enjoyed dinner with MLSPS members at Peppers Restaurant.

Fleet Captain P/C Jim Friedrichs, JN*

That floating yellow timber is a buoy, not debris

Major channel buoys have been replaced with ice buoys. They are four-inch square lengths of yellow painted timbers anchored in the same place as the buoys they replace. With the latest period of freezing weather many of the minor buoys have been moved or destroyed.

The Coast Guard will be working to correct the buoys when conditions permit. The prudent mariner should check the buoyage when he or she resumes boating.

The next phase of work to expand Poplar Island has begun and is scheduled to continue until July 2019. The island is planned to be one

half mile wide and one mile long, north to south. During construction look out for numerous tugs, barges and other work boats in the area.

The Chesapeake City anchorage has been dredged.

The Coast Guard announced that its work would be reduced during Congress’ recent brief shutdown of the federal government. Look for updates from USCG if another shutdown occurs.

I suggest that each of us consider taking our local Congressperson out for a long walk on a short pier.

New MLSPS Members G. Minshall Painter IV and Tamara Waters have

transferred their memberships from the cyber squadron to MLSPS. And yes, Minshall is the son of members George and Jan Painter.

Dave and Marybeth Moretti joined the squadron in December.

Please welcome them and update your rosters.

Paddling in a Winter WonderlandBy P/C Joe Pezely, N*

Patty and I have been paddling our tandem kayak for 17 years now.

We've explored many rivers and creeks of the upper Chesapeake Bay, gunkholed the nooks and hollows of Eastern Neck Island, and tackled the Cape May wetlands armed with a laminated satellite map.

We've paddled the annual Schuylkill River Sojourn four times, and completed the full 112-mile trip twice, starting in Schuylkill Haven, near Pottsville, and taking out at Boathouse Row in Philadelphia.

This past year we even managed to check off the final stretch of Schuylkill, between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Delaware River, on a paddle that took us from Walnut Street on the Schuylkill to Walnut Street on the Delaware.

And through all of this, we never paddled in the winter. Until now. When our friends at Take It Outdoors Adventures told us about a chance to paddle up the

Schuylkill Canal in Mont Clare on the day of the Schuylkill Canal Association's annual Holiday Luminaria festival, we jumped at the chance. We would start in the river right across from Lock 60, paddle downstream about 2 1/2 miles, portage over to the canal, and then paddle the 2 1/2 miles back up to the Lock, at night, through the 2,000 luminaries that would be lining the canal. We knew it would be cold, but we had no idea it would also snow, adding a level of magic to the trip that we wouldn't have traded away for anything.Patti and Joe Pezely on a snowy paddle.

Luminaria make the Schuylkill Canal magical.

Spring is right around the corner and it’s time to cure your cabin fever! Once again our squadron will be representing the United States Power Squadrons at the Philadelphia Boat Show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, and we need your help.

We will have the Virtual Trainer and we need volunteers to staff the booth. You’ll be talking to the attendees about America’s Boating Club and about our boating courses, and you’ll be encouraging folks to join USPS. (And you’ll be able to check out the boats before and after your shift.)

The show runs from 1 pm Friday, March 9, to 5 pm Sunday, March 11. We will have four shifts on Friday and Saturday and two shifts on Sunday. I would like to have four members at each shift. Decide what shift(s) work for you, then sign up.

We also need help to set up and break down the booth. We can set up on Thursday, March 8 between noon and 7 pm and break down the booth Sunday after 5 pm. Please let me know if you can help so we can coordinate this.

Please sign up before Feb. 20 so I can arrange for your name badge that will admit you to the show. Pick up your name badge at the main desk.

If you have questions or want to offer to help, contact me, Frank Visich, at [email protected]. I’ll see you at the show!

Remembering Siegfried Boettjer — friend, sailor, scholar

[Siegfried Boettjer, AP, of Berwyn, a longtime member of our squadron, passed away in late November. He took up sailing at the suggestion of his wife, Maryanne, and the two piloted their 35-foot Island Packet Voyager around the Chesapeake and in the Caribbean.]

By P/C Meridith Barrett, AP*Wayne and I met Siegfried and Maryanne

Boettjer when they joined the squadron in 1992. Their son Eric and our son Michael were close in age, so it was natural we would seek each other out when cruising with the Sail Club. Over the years, we have anchored out with them for many a weekend, shared dinners on our boats and just chilled on the cruises.

Sieg was intelligent, funny and quite private. He enjoyed crab feasts, if Maryanne cracked the crabs and picked them. Too much work. Once he told me he only ate grapes if someone peeled them. I did. I thought Maryanne was going to kill me.

Sieg was one of a kind and had a unique sense of humor; but was always a proper gentleman. He didn’t just join the Squadron, he

participated. Sieg gave his time and talent. He taught classes, did boat inspections and was SEO.

He was a good friend and a good sailor and we will miss him.

    Pre-Cruise Dinner Meeting

    Thursday, May 17, 2018

    Don’t Miss It!

Main Line Sail and Power Squadron’s annual summer cruise is a highlight of the year. Everyone who has been on the cruise will tell you what a great time they had. Join us for all or part of the cruise that covers two weekends and the week in between — Friday, July 13 through Sunday, July 22.

Please join us at the San Nicola Restaurant in Paoli for dinner and to review the planning and activities for the summer cruise on the Chesapeake.

ALL members and their guests are invited to our monthly dinner meeting. You don’t need to be going on the cruise to attend the dinner to have fun and enjoy the company. Come and learn about the cruise. You may find ports and activities of interest and decide to join us at various sites.

And, don’t feel anxious about joining the cruise. If you are a new boater, we will have other similar boats accompany you on the trip. Bring your children and friends!

Our Main Line Sail and Power Squadron 2018 summer cruise itinerary is set. We call this the Commander’s Cruise since the commander decides which ports of call we will visit. Incoming Commander John Beardsley has chosen four ports for this year’s cruise. We estimate that between 15 and 20 boats will participate.

If you would like to crew on a boat, let me know. If you are new to boating, we can team you with another similar boat. There will be many interesting activities on the cruise, all of which are optional. They

include a beach party, a tour of Fort McHenry, dinner at several great restaurants, more than a few of our celebrated boat crawls, the infamous “forward throttle award” ceremony of course, and other interesting events still in development. Look for details in an upcoming article. You will be able to sign up for them at our May pre-cruise dinner. Don’t miss this annual cruise! Something exciting always provides wonderful memories. We are looking forward to seeing you!

Secretary• Cdr Lisa Fegan proposed revitalizing a

Standards of Operation book for incoming commanders. She asked each committee head and Bridge officer to submit a description of the duties and responsibilities for his or her assigned position by the Feb. 7 Ex-Com meeting.

    • Cdr Fegan reported that she has had difficulty reaching the District 3 USPS Commander in Puerto Rico to distribute the funds donated by

members at the holiday party. She will continue to pursue contact with the commander and enlist help from the National USPS office.

    • Members agreed to keep Maryanne Boettjer as Vessel Safety Check chairperson in 2018. She has been instrumental to the success of the committee.

    • Reminder: Bring trophies and plaques to the Feb. 7 Ex-Com or the Feb. 15 monthly meeting so they can be prepared for the Change of Watch on March 17.
