UNS SCHOOL OF FiSH ON JUNE 10TH WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!!

The School of Fish was a 2 1/2-hour fi shing class (Noon-2:30 PM) open to kids ages 6 up to 12 taught by pro an-gler and television show host Mike Frisch. Students learned about lakes, fi nding fi sh in those lakes and some great ways to catch them. They also learned to tie a fi shing knot and rigging and using a slip-bobber setup.

20 kids ages 6 to 11 attended. Mike Frisch did an excellent job. Information about the event can be found at http://www.fi shingthemidwest.com. They all left the class with the knowledge and skills to go fi shing!

Also, two 2018 School of Fish graduates names will be drawn to have the opportunity to be a guest on Fishing the Midwest TV show!

38TH ANNUAL WALLEYE CONTEST HAD RECORD PARTiCiPATiON

United Northern Sportsmen hosted the 38th Annual Walleye Contest starting on June 8th from 8 am to 5 pm and June 9th from 8 am to 3 pm on Island Lake. Ticket sales were up considerably from last year.

66 fi sh were registered. A 19 3/4” Walleye was the largest fi sh caught and there was a tie for 2nd place with two 19 1/4” walleyes submitted by two adult females.

Our Annual Walleye Contest is held the same weekend as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sanctioned “Take a Kid Fishing Weekend”. This weekend adults accompaning their kids will not need a license, enabling more kids the opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Everyone entering a 14” or larger walleye receives a prize. There is also a special “Youth Division” prize.

Proceeds from the Walleye Contest will support the many conservation educational efforts, youth fi rearms safety, camp scholarships, youth fi eld day, and School of Fish clinic. Any donation from you will help defray some of the cost of the contest. United Northern Sportsmen is a non-profi t 501(c)(3).

Thank You, Pat and Deb McAuliffe, Contest Chairs

iSLAND LAKE DAM RECREATiON AREA WiLL REMAiN OPEN iN 2018

Minnesota Power is replacing five cast iron sluice gates at the Island Lake Main Dam as part of its continuing investment in Island Lake Reservoir. The gates allow dam operators to control the discharge of water from the dam’s outlet structure. While work will move ahead in 2018, we have determined that the Island Lake Dam Recreation Area, including the boat launch and other facilities, can safely remain open during this phase of construction. Access to the dam will be restricted at times.

As the project continues in 2019, the Island Lake Dam Recreation Area will be closed from mid-July through the end of theyear to ensure the safety of construction workers and the public. The closure will include all facilities at the area, including the boat launch, public beach, parking lots, canoe portage, and fishing pier that complies with Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility guidelines.

Water levels will not be affected at Island Lake Reservoir since they are dependent on spring snowmelt and rains. The gate replacement project will allow for normal reservoir operations to capture that runoff.

Other recreation sites at Island Lake include the Abbot Road boat launch, Hideaway boat launch and picnic area, and Island Lake Park pavilion, picnic area and beach. Download a map at http:/www.mpland.com/Recreation/Reservoirs.

Island Lake Reservoir is part of Minnesota Power’s hydroelectric system and provides water for wintertime energy generation at Minnesota Power’s downstream hydroelectric generating stations— Knife Falls, Scanlon, Thomson, and Fond du Lac. The reservoir also provides water regulation to help mitigate high downstream flows and water for recreational opportunities and aquatic habitat in the reservoir and downstream.

At 10,800 acres, Island Lake Reservoir is the largest of the reservoirs near Duluth, and attracts boaters, anglers, swimmers and other outdoors enthusiasts. Minnesota Power provides 11 water accessible primitive campsites on the reservoir. Anglers here find bluegill, perch, bass, crappie, walleye, northern pike, and musky.

CONSERVATiON EFFORTS – ADOPT A WMA

Several comments were shared via our recent membership survey that some of our members would like to see more con-servation efforts in the area. Our Club President Tom Wasbotten will be forming a committee to review the possibility of adopting the Canosia Wildlife Management Area (WMA) to assist the MNDNR with maintaining the area. Some examples of the things the club can help the DNR with are: Managing Wood Duck boxes, Mowing trails and clearing debris, Repainting kiosks, Posting/checking signs, etc. Your input is important! If you have any questions, comments, or would like to be involved on the committee, please contact Tom Wasbotten at 218-721-4864 or [email protected] or Cody Privette at 218-260-2932 or [email protected].
