Unit 4 - P5

Data Protection:

The Data Protection Act governs how organisations process and store personal data. What can be determined so far is what Tesco has told us:

the system doesn’t store information and does not process data for the purposes of the Data Protection Act.

If no data is stored in Tesco’s computer system, then it probably doesn’t

count as personal data under Section 1 of the Data Protection Act. In a strict interpretation of the 1998 Act, this would be the case. However we

have moved on to a more flexible understanding of the meaning of personal data. For the Article 29 Working Group, personal data is

interpreted to mean “am I likely to be identifiable from this data?” For example, a postcode may have a hundred people living within it, and a

postcode by itself would not be personal data because it doesn’t relate to any one of those hundred people. However, what if the postcode only

had one person living within it? Then the postcode would be considered an identifiable detail and therefore personal data.

For example, a postcode may have a hundred people living within it, and a postcode by itself would not be personal data because it doesn’t relate

to any one of those hundred people. However, what if the postcode only had one person living within it? Then the postcode would be considered

an identifiable detail and therefore personal data.

This will benefit Tesco’s because:

It will benefit Tesco’s as they will be avoiding fines so data protection registration through us includes guidance on the 8 data protection principles and information ensuring your business is compliant. Another one is customer security it’s that registration with the ICO means that Tesco’s is issued with a data protection registration number which means displaying this on their website. Lastly better business management because the data protection act requires better management and storage of information as research shows that it can generally lead to better business practices.

Ethical issue:

Ethical trading at Tesco’s specifically involve:

Values - ensuring we work with suppliers who share our values Monitoring - getting to the truth about conditions for workers in our

supply chains Improvement - supporting our suppliers to improve Transparency - being open and honest, working with others

Computer misuse Act:

They will never disclose your information to anyone outside the Tesco

Group of companies, except:

If they are under a duty to disclose or share your personal data in order to comply with any legal obligation or in order to enforce or apply on their terms and rights

To analytics and search engine providers that assist Tesco’s in their improvement and optimisation of Tesco’s.

To other companies who provide a service to them for example advertising partners and networks that require the data to select and serve relevant adverts to you and others

The main things they use your personal information will be

if:

Page 4: Unit 4 p5 & p6

They manage and improve their Website, including to ensure that content is presented in the most effective manner for you and for your computer;

To administer their website and for internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research, statistical and survey purposes;

Personalise their services to you.

To inform you about important changes to their Website and other services;

Manage promotions, competitions, customer surveys and questionnaires, and to allow you to participate in interactive features of their service, when you choose to do so.

This will benefit Tesco’s because:

As they got all the information on their system they can advertise any products or sales and offers to customers that are interested which will spread the word and get more customers and potential customers aware of what is on which will benefit Tesco by making them more profit.

Tesco’s health and Safety issues:

Tesco run safety communications and activities in stores and depots to raise awareness of health and safety issues. For example in Poland in 2010/11 they launched a contest to find the safest stores which was engaging staff to improve safety and hygiene standards. The judges looked at the number of accident-free days and activities in stores aimed at preventing accidents. However in other countries they have a very successful safety behaviour programme, which has reduced accidents by 9.1% since 2009.

Page 5: Unit 4 p5 & p6

They measure the rate of injuries suffered by their workers and the customers who visit their stores. They also carry out independent audits of our stores and depots. In the UK every store has an unannounced visit every six months to ensure compliance with their health and safety

policy.

How this benefits Tesco’s: There workers will want to stay there and will not worry about anything as they organisation will have their back if there is any health and safety issues for example if an angry customer hits a worker Tesco’s will definitely do something about it for example take them to court and fight for the employees’ rights and sew the customer with the laws he/she broke.

Page 6: Unit 4 p5 & p6

(Emails, Website Internet). Tesco’s communicate in a written way is emailing their workers so there is a date, time and a record so there is always proof in-case there’s an issue that needs to be sorted or if the business needs a worker to work extra hours so they’ll change the shifts about. Written communication isn’t always about two people communicating together. Websites can be used to advertisement showing the offers and deals they are doing which will affect the business in a good way. An advantage of written communication is that there’ll always be a date on when things have been sent so they’ll always be evidence in case anything happens.

Tesco’s require this privacy policy as it’s a retail store

1. Information security is sometimes shortened to InfoSec which is the practice of defending information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification. It is a general term that can be used regardless of the form the data may take foe example electronic and physical.

◊ Back ups

Backups are where if any files or documents have been

lost or stolen you can back your data up and get

everything back that is important for the business for

example if any barcodes or any customers or workers

personal information goes out to the public they can

corrupt the data on every computer apart from there

system.

◊ Health and

Safety

Health and safety issues are the safety of workers and if

they have any health issues that may need treatment at

any hospital and if the workers are working in a safe

environment for example if a store is dirty and slippery

which may harm any workers physically.

However health and safety issues will not benefit

Tesco’s as it will cost extra amounts to buy things such

as equipment and/or any extra treatment to the workers

which will affect the business’ profit.
