PSLE T-SCORE

Page 27: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version

PSLE - A Placement Exam

• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils within their peers.

• Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability

• Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.

Page 28: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version

A need for standardisation of the raw scores in PSLE

Transformed Score or T-Score

Page 29: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version

Calculation of PSLE T-Score

T-score = 50 +10(x – m)/SD

Where x is the pupil’s mark;

m is the average mark (mean) scored by all

the pupils who sat for the subject;

SD is the spread of marks around the

average mark (standard deviation)

Page 30: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version

Example :

• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50• Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68• Spread of marks (SD) around the average mark (Y) = 14

T = 50 + 10 (50 – 68) 14

= 37.14

Page 31: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version

Calculation of PSLE T-Score

• EL , MT, Maths & Science

- Each carries the same weighting in the computation of the Aggregate Score

- The mark of each subject is converted to a T-score

- The T-scores of the 4 subjects are then summed to give the Aggregrate Score

Page 32: 2010 P5 And P6 Principals Dialogue Collated Version
