Context – Edit a promotional music video for the release of a new music artist.

You have researched, planned, and recorded footage for a new music video for a

previously unreleased artist.

You must prepare and edit your footage into a finished music video.

LO1: Understand the development and principals of editing.

TASK 1: Prepare and record a short video for new Media Studies students

explaining the meaning, aims, and development of editing.

To achieve a pass you will provide an outline for the development and main

principals of editing, in which all aspects are accurate and relevant but detail will be

limited. You might refer to individual films but will not select details from, or elements

of, those films to exemplify the points you have made. You will show a basic

understanding of technical terminology, but you will be unsure about this terminology

and may make frequent mistakes when using it.

To achieve a merit you will talk about the principals in such a way as to show how or

why they have developed. You will explain why specific techniques are used in

particular circumstances, or explain the strengths and weaknesses of given

techniques. You will give detailed examples to support your points, but may not

explain why they support your points. You will use technical terminology correctly for

the most part.

To achieve a distinction you will be critical – you will compare, assess, and

discriminate, supporting your points with clear arguments and evidence. You will

draw out of an example precisely what it is about it that exemplifies the point it

illustrates. You will show a sophisticated understanding of editing techniques.

Technical language will be secure and used confidently at all times.

LO2: Be able to prepare moving image material for editing.

TASK 2: Organise and prepare your recorded footage for editing.

You will need to:

Develop a labelling system for your footage, depending on the content and

style of your music video;

Make judgements about the quality of footage you have filmed;

Match your filmed footage to your original storyboard in preparation for

editing.

To achieve a pass you will provide evidence of an awareness of the process and

preparation techniques necessary for editing and of their application, but the

application will be inconsistent. Documentation will be basic and lacking in detail.

To achieve a merit you will apply editing preparation techniques systematically and

the documents you produce will be functional and prepared with some care. There

will be recognition of why such documentation in necessary. However, documents

may lack full detail, and organisation may lack proper rigour.

To achieve a distinction you will prepare your footage in a way which is thorough,

systematic, and detailed. Documentation will show a full appreciation of the

possibilities of shots, and documents will provide a detailed blueprint for the final

piece. All paperwork will be clear and organised to a near professional standard.

LO3: Be able to edit moving image material.

You need to edit your recorded footage into a finished music video for

screening.

To achieve a pass you will demonstrate a basic ability of apply key techniques and

principals but with some technical shortcomings such as occasional flash frames,

jump cuts and poorly balanced sound. Techniques applied will not necessarily be

suited to the genre or form of the edited piece and in terms of the imaginative

qualities of your work, it will not move beyond the conventional.

To achieve a merit your edited work will exhibit only minor technical flaws. Flash

frames and jump cuts should generally be absent and the techniques chosen should

essentially suit the genre and form of the work. There may be flaws with timing and

pacing, but generally there should be a sense of competent selection and

combination of sound and vision. There will be some imaginative thought behind the

work so that technical skills will be employed with some inventiveness.

To achieve a distinction your editing will be technically accomplished and exhibit

flair in its use of structure, pace, and combination of sound and vision. Techniques

used will be entirely appropriate for the genre and form of the work. Not only will

finished products be technically correct, but the productions will show that learners

have been creative in the use of available media, applying your technical skills not

just with imagination but with ingenuity and even elegance. Again, work will approach

professional standards.
