Kitchen Garden Fundraiser
Last Sunday evening , in partnership with the
Colonial Brewery, we hosted our first annual
Kitchen Garden Fundraiser. Over a hundred
people joined us at Colonial to dance to the
sounds of the Formidable Vegetable Sound
System and raise funds for our school’s
Kitchen Garden Program. Charlie McGee, of
the Formidable Vegetable Sound System,
donated his time and energy to make the
evening a huge success. Our P&C, with a huge
effort from Cate Worsley and Deb Salkeld,
brought the event together. It featured a
baking competition judged by Ian Parmenter,
face painting, seed bomb creating and raffles
with amazing prizes. We raised over $4000 on
the night and would like to say a big THANK
YOU to Bill from Colonial Brewery for
providing an amazing venue. Congratulations
to Tikki Goodall and Will Dallimore who were
the winners of the baking competition and
congratulations to everybody who entered.
We will make this an annual event now and
look forward to you coming along to join in
the fun next year!

NAIDOC Celebrations were early this year and Big Al, a Bibbleman Noongar man, and his family, Pancakes
and Leonie, gave our students a wonderful experience. Pancakes taught the students traditional Aboriginal
Dance. Students performed the Yonger, Weitch and Walgin dances for the audience accompanied by the
yirakee or better known as Didgeredoo. Leonie showed students the traditional Aboriginal Art symbols and
they created their own dreaming story visually and then told them to the group. Big Al told stories that were
very scary at times and talked about his life and culture to the students. It was a fantastic day and everyone
was very happy to be there.

Vacancy – Education Assistant (Mainstream) for our
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program
Margaret River Primary School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Education Assistant – Mainstream to join
their friendly team.
We are seeking an innovative person who has a passion for gardening and is able to work collaboratively with
the kitchen specialist. The role involves planning and preparing for the many activities involved in providing
garden experiences for children in Years 4 and 5. Importantly, liaison and co-operation between our specialists
and program coordinator is essential so that garden produce is maximised for use in the varied and exciting
recipes planned throughout the year.
As the position involves work with seasonal produce, garden procedures and garden maintenance, knowledge in
these areas which can be shared with the students will be highly advantageous. WWC accreditation is desirable
and applicants with prior similar experience will be looked upon favourably. The successful applicant will be
confident in planning and delivering lessons with support from class teachers.
For further details please see the full advert on www.jobs.wa.gov.au –
all applications must be submitted online.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:
Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect
Ride to School day is on the Friday 24th March when we encourage all students to ride their wheeled devices to
school. A perfect opportunity for our students and parents to embrace a healthier start to their day and enjoy
the great outdoors and fresh air in our amazing town. Remember be a good role model and always wear your
helmet when you ride with your child. The earlier children learn the importance of wearing a bike helmet, the
more likely they will continue to wear a helmet as they grow older. Be firm in laying down the ‘no-helmet-no-
bike’ rule and set a good example by wearing a helmet yourself. Here are some points to remember when riding
so your journeys are always safe.
Anyone ten years and younger should not ride by themselves.
Must wear an approved helmet while in motion.
Must walk bikes across roads, not ride them.
Must warn pedestrians with your bell of your approach.
Must not hold onto another moving vehicle or be towed by it.
Must not be more than two bicycles abreast on a road.
Must not ride recklessly or carelessly.
Must use the correct hand signals to turn left or right, and to stop.
Must have at least one hand on the handlebar while in motion.
Shared paths and footpaths
There are some special rules for the use of shared paths and footpaths in WA. Shared paths and footpaths are
paths that are designated for shared use by cyclists and pedestrians. These rules include:
All cyclists, regardless of their age, may ride on any footpath unless a ‘no bicycles sign’ has been erected.
Riders must keep left on shared paths and footpaths unless overtaking.
Riders must give way to pedestrians at all times (pedestrians include people walking, using motorised and non-
motorised wheelchairs, and people on rollerblades and skates).
At shared path intersections, you must signal your intention to turn and give way to motor vehicles entering or
exiting an intersecting road.
Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education.

Value
Cooperation -At Margaret River Primary School, one of our core values is Cooperation which is where we work
together to achieve success.
You show cooperation when you work in a small group to accomplish a task , when you allow each person in a
group to have a say, volunteer at home to help out and when you play a team sport and work toward a common
goal. Remember, many hands make light work.
Bicycle Safety with Children
Let’s keep our kids safe on the road.
Kidsafe WA recommend children under the age of ten should cycle with responsible adults, as most children in that age group do not have the skills to cycle safely without supervision. However, this does come down to parental discretion as a parent knows their child best in terms of the child’s maturity and skills to cycle safely.
In regards to peripheral vision, generally children under the age of 10 are still developing their peripheral vision and directional hearing, so until this has fully developed it can be tricky for children to assess situations such as when it is safe to cross the road.
The Bicycle Safety fact sheet and Pedestrian Safety fact sheet are attached for more information regarding this subject.
