WOMENS PREMIER LEAGUE UPPER HUTT CITY

VS WESTS

FROM THE SIDELINEWOMENS CENTRAL LEAGUE COACH WENDI HENDERSON

Today sees us host to newly promoted Motorua from New Plymouth and I’d like to formerly welcome them to our facility. We have been watching Motorua’s results closely and know today’s game isn’t going to be an easy one.

The last couple of weeks have seen us get the results we have wanted which are reward for the effort the players are putting in at trainings as well as in the games. It is a very competitive environment this season with players needing to work hard week in week out for central league places. An away win against Valeron put to rest the “bogey team” status we have had with them in the past and 3 more points to add to our tally.

Last week we played our first knock out cup game against Palmerston North Marist. The game started a bit scrappy and we found ourselves 1 nil down after 17 minutes. Right from the kick off though we redeemed ourselves and scored straight away making it 1 all after 18 minutes. We then went on to a convincing win of 10-2 with goals going to Emily Morison 4, Emma Main 2, Kennedy Bryant 2, Bria Sargent 1 and Ellen Stirling 1.

We know today’s clash will be tough and are definitely not taking Motorua lightly at all. We need to keep our momentum going as we enter into the tougher end of the first round.

All the best to our Premier team who are taking on Western Suburbs today at 3pm.Thanks to all our supporters who have been great cheering us on from the sidelines and a big congratulations to our goalkeeper Cushla Lichtwark who has been named in the Football Ferns World Cup Team for Canada.

Enjoy the game Wendi

Today sees us host the Western Suburbs team to our facility. We welcome Kirk and his team.

We have accepted the opportunity of playing in the Premier League this season and so far the challenge has been met head on. We are definitely benefiting from the mix of youth and experienced players and the combination is producing a great foundation for us to work upon.

We have been light on action recently due to other Cups rounds but in our last game on 3 May we played and beat Karori 10-0. We started quickly scoring in the third minute and led 4-0 at halftime. At half time we talked about just doing the little things better and a tidier structure. The team pushed on pleasingly to the final score. The Karori team chose our MVP to be Bex Jefferies.Scorers were: Bex Jefferies 3, Becky Stewart 3, Caitlin Foster 2, Grace McRobie 1, Amohia Dudding (Duds) 1.

All the best to our Central League team who are taking on Motorua on the turf earlier today. We welcome Cameron Porteous to our coaching staff and look forward to working with him.We wish Cushla all the best experiences when she travels to the World Cup in Canada.

Lastly thanks to everyone who has turned out today to come and support the team.

World Cup - Football Ferns Named Congratulations Cushla

The New Zealand side to contest their third successive FIFA Women’s World Cup was confirmed on Thursday as coach Tony Readings revealed the 23-player squad making the trip to Canada later this month.Led by 25-year-old captain Abby Erceg, the team includes 12 players with over 50 international caps with only goalkeeper Cushla Lichtwark – a former netballer with the Central Pulse – yet to play at senior international level. The squad has a settled look with fullback Anna Green – returning from injury in recent times – and striker Emma Kete freshening up the group.Kete, who returns to the squad with 48 international caps to her name and having played professionally for the likes of Manchester City, Western New York Flash and Sydney FC, earned her place after impressing in the full time training programme with the team in New Zealand.Green – who has amassed over 50 caps since her debut in 2006, has also turned out for Notts County, Sydney FC and Bundesliga club Lokomotive Leipzig – is currently with Auckland club Fencibles United AFC.New Zealand Football High Performance Director Fred de Jong says the Football Ferns qualification for their third straight World Cup tournament provides another chance to showcase the power of the global game in this country.“The Beyond Football High Performance Plan aims to put New Zealand on the global football map and provide a pathway to achieve consistent success on the world stage,” de Jong said.“The world will be watching as our team contest the tournament in Canada and our participation will help improve our nation’s profile on and off the field.“Growing that profile gives us the chance to improve the resources we have to reinvest and drive the growth of the game as we continue to harness the rapid growth in numbers playing the game in New Zealand.”Readings says the comprehensive selection process underpinning the squad has put the team in a strong position heading into the nation’s fourth World Cup event, having also appeared in the inaugural tournament in 1991.“It’s been a lengthy process which really started in 2013 when our funding and resources increased to enable us to consistently play the best teams in the world,” Readings said.“What we’ve seen over the time since then is regular games against the best teams, where players are frequently tested. During that process, we’ve blooded some new and younger players so it’s been a really thorough selection process and we’ve had a chance to have a good look at players and we’re really confident we’ve picked the best 23 players.”The squad includes 15 players who featured at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany and five of those players were also part of the team which contested the 2007 tournament in China.Readings says the inclusion of those players – including international centurions in Erceg, Ria Percival and Katie Duncan – hasn’t come by accident.“Raising the experience of the players has been a massive part of our planning. It’s all been about increasing the number of caps, increasing the amount of FIFA tournament experience and also increasing the quality of the caps as well.” (Source NZ Football)
