Scouting for Solutions
Vol. 2 No. 1, March 2007
Check your beliefsI like to be a male leaderbecause men have powerover women. Boys and
girls cannot do the samethings. Even theirbehaviours are different.B M, 12, Masindi PublicSchool
What do you think aboutBanuras story? Do you believewhat he is saying?Just like Banura, some peoplewrongly believe that boys arestronger than girls.Theybelieve that girls cannot be aspowerful as boys. But this isnot true.
Look around your community.Havent you seen or heard of
women doctors, engineers andpilots in the country? Have youheard about Liberias femalepresident? Even in your class, arent there girls who are asbright as boys?.
What about Scouts activities?Dont girls and boys do thesame tasks? Boys, you need tochange your beliefs that makegirls feel less powerful. Girls, you too need to develop apositive attitude aboutyourself.
Inside, read about howboth girls and boys can bepowerful.
Girls and Boys cando the same things
Welcome to the 4th issueof Scouts Voice (SV). Thisissue will help youunderstand more about theabilities of boys and girls.
Do you think boys and girlshave equal power to do samethings? How do they acquirethis power? And how do they
use the power they get? Readand find out. Discuss withyour friends points that youfind interesting.
Power means our ability to door say things that make othersrespect you. They respect youbecause they feel you areimportant. For example, being
a prefect in class means youhave the ability to lead.
Power also refers to yourability to get what you wantin life without anybody oranything stopping you. Thisshould apply to both boysand girls.

Dear girls and boys, Igreet you all in the nameof scouting, as wecelebrate 100 years ofscouting in the worldthis year. Let us applythe principles we learn inscouting in our day-to-day practices. Respectand support each otherwithout discrimination.Boys, support yoursisters and femalerelatives with work suchas baby sitting, cookingand sweeping, whichused to be looked at asgirls work. Do not bully
or beat up girls. Respectthem as your equals.
Girls and boys, stayhealthy and avoid badgroups. Avoid earlypregnancies, HIV andother STDs. Say No togifts and money inexchange for sex. Stay inschool. Make use of thefree primary andsecondary education. Ifsome problems force youto drop out, return toschool because the lawsupports that. Staying inschool helps you toavoid bad peer groups
that can mislead youinto risky behaviours.
