For each and every day I spent in Uganda, I can give you a reason why that day was special. I learned the language quickly and talked to all the locals I met. I soaked it up. Over here in Canada, I'm n I'm never so social, but over there I was literally chatting with everyone. I think society over there is just much more welcoming.

TThe experience changed my point of view in so many ways. I think that experiences like this are so valuable and people should take them on more often. I feel everyone should do a semester abroad.

PREPARATION

Living in a developing country is an exciting, and sometimes challenging, experience. Insight ensures that students are prepared for their semester abroad through pre-departure and in-country orientations. We also provide extensive documentation for stu- dents on what to expect, and how to navigate the transition to living in a developing country. transition to living in a developing country.

HOUSING

Students will be living in dorm-style shared accommodations with an equipped kitchen, hand-washed laundry and housekeeping. Our accommodations are in a guarded, gated compound located in a safe and wel-located upper class neighbourhood in Kampala.

AMENITIES

Kampala has a vibrant restaurant and cafe culture, with students living a 10 minute uber ride away from the biggest mall in the country. Coffee is a major export from Uganda, and the cafes in the city are some of the best in Africa. Food is comparable to Western standards, and everything from mexican, to indian food can be found. Supermarkets contain packaged and found. Supermarkets contain packaged and fresh food, with everything from local markets to large supermarkets available for shopping. PLANNING YOUR TRIPAt first I was nervous about spending 3 months in a developing country, butthe staff at Insight guided me through the entire process and fully prepared me for my trip. The onsite staff were responsive and were quick to respond to any issues that came up. I felt safe duduring my entire stay.

The internship component of our programs are often considered the highlight for participating students. The internship provides valuable on-the-ground work experience in a developing country, whilst allowing students to develop tangible skills.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM

While these courses are considered

“upper-division” at Makerere University, it is ultimateit is ultimately up to the student to ensure they will transfer

Students will be spending one day a week attending classes at our partner institution, Makerere University. Makerere University is Uganda’s largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning. Makerere was first established as a technical school in 1922, and has since grown to include 9 faculties including a school of Law. Makerere consistently ranks as one of the top 5 post-secondary institutions in all of Africa.

Similar to most “study abroad” programs, our classes are evaluated on a pass/fail basis and contain no final exams. Homework will be assigned by teachers, with compulsory written reports and group presentations, as part of the curriculum.

The course seeks to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and tools used in the conflict analysis, peace building and conflict transform- ation processes aimed at fostering post conflict recovery, rehabilitation and development. In this regard, the course will introduce students to course will introduce students to concepts such as dialogue, reconcilia- tion, equity, justice and co-existence. The course will engage students in practical exercises such as roleplays and/or simulation exercises.

This course examines the international relations of African states, through the lens of contem- porary African politics. It analyses intra-African relations, interaction of African states with the global system, and the interplay of domestic and external factors in African politics. external factors in African politics. Uganda is a landlocked country sharing borders with Rwanda, the DRC, Kenya, Sudan, and Tanzania. The capital city of Uganda, Kampala, sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, and the second largest in the world.

SAFETYWe understand that safety is a significant concern when it comes to international travel and, for this reason, Insight maintains a comprehensive risk and safety vetting process for every program we operate. If a program does not fully meet our risk assessment criteria, we will simply not run that program. For us, the safety of our students is our highest priority. Throughout the program, in-country support staff keep informed and are readily available in case of emergencies. We maintain relationships with a comprehensive list of medical facilities that offer high standards of care to patients. All staff and students are briefed on appropriate ways of reaching facilities in case of emergency. We also keep in contact with helicopter evacuation services in the case of accident or requiring evacuation.

ACCESS TO MEDICAL FACILITIES

We continuously monitor the political climate of Uganda for unrest, and maintain a network of local contacts who keep our program directors and staff informed of any developments in the government. All of our staff maintain contact with the Canadian, British, and American embassies in Kampala, in cases where consulting or evacuation is needed. consulting or evacuation is needed.

POLITICAL

Students require vaccination prior to arriving in Uganda for identified diseases in the region. Our program staff and partner medical organizations remain up to date on the status of diseases in the country.
