For each and every day I spent in Uganda, I can give you a reason why that day was special. I learned the language quickly and talked to all the locals I met. I soaked it up. Over here in Canada, I'm n I'm never so social, but over there I was literally chatting with everyone. I think society over there is just much more welcoming.

TThe experience changed my point of view in so many ways. I think that experiences like this are so valuable and people should take them on more often. I feel everyone should do a semester abroad.

It is a landlocked country bordering Rwanda, the DRC, Kenya, Sudan, and Tanzania. The capital city of Uganda, Kampala sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the second largest in the world.

SAFETYWe understand that safety is a significant concern when it comes to international travel, for this reason Insight maintains a comprehensive risk and safety vetting process for every program we operate. If a program does not fully meet our risk assessment criteria, we will simply not run that program. Insight maintains a variety of risk mitigation strategies for every program, and risk assessments are performed prior to every program departure.

We maintain relationships with a comprehensive list of medical facilities that offer western levels of care to patients. All staff and students are briefed on appropriate ways of reaching facilities in care of emergency.

We continuously monitor the political climate of Uganda for unrest, and maintain a network of local contacts who keep our program directors and staff informed of any developments in the government. POLITICAL

Students are required to visit a travel clinic and obtain vaccinations for Uganda and the region. Our program staff and partner medical organizations remain up to date on the status of diseases in the country.

The internship component of our programs are often considered the highlight for participating students. The internship provides valuable on-the-ground work experience in a developing country, whilst allowing students to develop tangible skills.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM

While these courses are considered

“upper-division” at Makerere University, it is ultimateit is ultimately up to the student to ensure that they will transfer back accordingly at their home institution.

Students will be spending one day a week attending class at our partner institution Makerere University, Uganda’s largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning. Makerere was rst established as a technical school in 1922, and has since grown to include 9 faculties including a school of Business.

Additionally, as part of the Entrepreneurship Abroad program, students Additionally, as part of the Entrepreneurship Abroad program, students will spend one day a week preparing a formal consultancy analysis of their respective internships. Shared collaborative work spaces around Kampala will be reserved for students to work on their analysis, with their presentation and final report counting towards their final grade for both courses. During this time, participants will also have the opportunity to network with local innovators and discuss challenges, trends, and interesting topics in the areas of social business and trends, and interesting topics in the areas of social business and entrepreneurship.

This course develops and sharpens students’ abilities in the analysis of complex business environments and the effective use of various business analysis tools and techniques to assess strategic feasibility. PREPARATION

Living in a developing country is an exciting, and sometimes challenging experience. Insight ensures that students are prepared for their semester abroad through pre-departure and in-country orientations. We also provide extensive documentation for students on what to expect, and how to navigate the transition to living in a developing country. living in a developing country.

HOUSING

Students will be living in dorm-style shared apartments that come with a fully functioning kitchen, as well as laundry and housekeeping services. The apartments are spacious and located in a guarded, gated compound within a safe neighbourhood in Kampala.

AMENITIES

Kampala has a vibrant restaurant and cafe culture, with students living a 5 minute Uber ride away from the biggest mall in the country. Coffee is a major export from Uganda and the cafes in the city are some of the best in Africa. Food is comparable to western standards and everything from Mexican to Indian food can be found.
