Ubiquitous Presenter (UP)

• What is it?– How is it related to UW CP?– How is it different?

• Usage reports– Who is using it and how?– What do students think?

• How do I use it?

UP: An extension of UW CP

• Intended to be a strict superset– Usually within six months of UW CP release

• Replaces networking technology with web-based networking

• Supports student interaction from any web-enabled device– Tablets, Laptops, Cell phones, PDAs, etc.

• Web-based storage of lecture materials– Instructor notes– Student activities

How does UP work?

Differences with UW CP

• Network uses standard web-based technology through a central server

• Automatic web-archiving and review of

• Support for student interaction from non-Tablet devices

Differences with UW CP: Networking

• TCP/IP through a central server– Time delay for student device update (3

second polling)– Instructor must have internet access to store

lectures• Though we are network interruption tolerant

– No un-tethered lecturing

I have to buy and install a server?

• We provide hosted classrooms on our server– http://up.ucsd.edu– Server in San Diego is supporting:

• British Columbia• Missouri• Georgia…

– But you are more “at the whim” of network status

• Planned summer code release if you want to run your own locally

Differences with UW CP

• Web storage of instructor inked notes– Provides student portal-like access to

instructor notes for stroke-by-stroke review (at instructor’s discretion)

• Web storage of student-produced work– Allows review of peer materials– Instructor can control which specific

submissions are viewable

Supporting all devices

• Students interact with any web-enabled device through a browser

• Ink solutions– Require Java to be installed

• Text solutions– Only require a browser– Enter text in a box, then click to place it on the screen

• Can be moved, updated later• More text boxes can be made

• Multiple Choice solutions– Choice of how many times students can vote– Results summarized and can be repeatedly “polled”

• Students select their mode of interaction

Who is using it and how?

• Fall 2005– More than 10 active classrooms at more than 6

institutions• UCSD, California State San Marcos, San Diego State,

Northwest Missouri State, UBC, Ft. Lewis College• Computer Science(N), Mathematics(1), Physics(3),

Economics(1), Biology(1)

• Recent Classrooms around the country– Medicine(2)– We are looking to target a broad range of disciplines

and explore K-12

Does it improve student learning?
