SIX SIMPLE STEPS TO HIRING A CO-OP STUDENT

The  University  of  Lethbridge  Faculty  of  Management  Cooperative  Education  Office  has  teamed  up  with  the  Co-‐op  Offices  at  the  University  of  Alberta,  the  University  of  Calgary,  Mount  Royal,  &  the  University  of  Saskatchewan  to  set  a  recruitment  calendar  for  all  co-‐op  positions  for  the  Fall  2016  semester.  Please  refer  to  the  following  dates  when  posting  co-‐op  positions:

September  1  –  Job  Postings  go  LIVE September  28  –  Earliest  date  for  Co-‐op  Jobs  closing September  29  –  Co-‐op  Interviews  Begin October  11  –  Co-‐op  Offers  Begin

The Co-op team liaises between employers and students to help facilitate the recruiting process. Here are the recommended steps:

1. Post with us

• Postings are accessible through our online job board to Lethbridge and Calgary campus students. To post, email postings to [email protected] or fill out our online form.

2. Review applications that are sent to you

• If the Co-op office is collecting applications (resumes, cover letters and transcripts), we will send them to you by the closing date.

• If you have identified “Online” as the mode of application, students will be directed to your website to apply

3. Compile a list of students for interviews

• Notify the Co-op office ([email protected]) of your short list • Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted and interviews arranged according to the specified dates and

times

4. Conduct Interviews

• Telephone, Skype, video conference and in-person interviews can be arranged by the Co-op office at no cost to you

• Interview rooms are provided on all three campuses or interviews can take place at your place of business

5. Select the student who is the best fit and notify us

• Our Co-op Program does not have a ranking and matching system so employers know the status of their offer to a student without significant delay

• The Co-op office will notify remaining applicants of selection decisions

6. Begin a successful relationship

• Provide a meaningful and educational work experience for the student that is reciprocated to you through effort, enthusiasm, contemporary skills and great ideas

• The Co-op student is a full-time registered student while on a work-term and thus maintains course registration status, eligibility for scholarships, loans, and health and dental benefits through the U of L

• The Co-op student is a temporary, full-time employee and should have the same performance expectations as any other term employee
