W hat the?! I just got judged! I had been
walking across the street downtown in jeans,
a t-shirt, light jacket, and my favorite pair of
converse sneakers on, heading to the library when I passed
one of THE finest individuals I ever saw in my LIFE. I
could tell the moment they actually noticed my presence.
The first thing their eyes went to was my shoes. They made
a facial expression of disgust and started moving faster past
me. Oh no! I actually stopped walking and looked back at
them. They didn't turn around or anything. I was a little
taken back but I went to the library and did some
extracurricular research. Come to find out, you can tell
certain personalities from the type of shoes people wear.

A ccording to a study published in the Journal of
Research in Personality, "Shoes serve a practical purpose, and
also serve as nonverbal cues with symbolic messages. People
tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear." That
made me think of what shoes this FINE individual was wearing.
They were very expensive and brand new looking. What did
that say about their personality? Using the same study as
previously, they determined people with higher incomes most
commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was
typically worn by extroverts. However, some of the more
specific results are intriguing. For example, "practical and
functional" shoes were generally worn by more "agreeable"
people, while ankle boots were more closely aligned with
"aggressive" personalities. Uncomfortable shoes were worn by
calm personalities. I looked down at my comfy converses and
knew for a fact I didn't fall into that "agreeable" people
category. I decided to read some more. The more I read about
this study the more interesting it got. People from the study
were able to determine a person's age, gender, income, and
emotional stability. For example, the liberal thinkers wear
shabbier and less expensive shoes. Those who had anxiety or
worried about their relationships tended to have new and well-
kept shoes. Now I have no idea what this person who passed me
thought of who I was from my shoes, but I sure would like to
know. I can say that some of the things I learned from reading
the study I had already been doing. When you look at the shoes
someone wears you DO make some initial judgements. I didn't
realize so much could be assessed from just the shoes though.
I'm more of a “do you have all your teeth” or “are your hands
clean” type of a gal. Another day, another dollar, another
golden nugget of knowledge to pass on about SHOES!

Two shots to the head. Dead. It had been a normal, early morning, slow traffic ride to Norfolk Naval Base,Norfolk, VA. I had just received a call from an Atlanta
number that was not in my contacts. When I answered thecall, it was from the mother of someone I had once beenvery close to. “Are you sitting down?” She started out theconversation with. “Yes,” I responded, not knowing whatwas going on. Two shots to the head. Dead. Suicide.“She shot herself twice.” Her mother continued, “One shotwent through her mouth and out her cheek. The secondshot went through her mouth, into her brain, and exited outthe back of her head. The second shot was the fatal shot.”I sat at a green light stunned. Horns started blaring. Thephone call suddenly seemed to sound very far away.SUICIDE.
Let’s talk about it! Suicide does NOT discriminate. It affects all age groups, cultures, and demographics. The end result is death or serious injury. But before it
even gets that far it can be stopped. Suicide is preventable. My friend’s mother told me her daughter wrote anote and then she killed herself. It detailed whyshe was in so much pain and could not bear tocontinue living that way. A note her motherwished she would have gotten before she tookher life. “A suicidal person may not ask forhelp, but that doesn't mean that help isn't want-ed. Most people who commit suicide don't wantto die, they just want to stop hurting.”(HelpGuide.org) The note revealed many things that myfriend’s mother never knew her daughter was strugglingwith. Depression, drugs, and abuse, were just a few thingsthat my friend was never able to express to anyone whileshe was alive. What surprised me was her mother had wit-nessed her daughter exhibiting irregular behavior beforeshe took her life. Her mother hadn’t acknowledged that be-havior as suicidal. She figured her daughter was “strong”and would “deal” with it. She never thought she would takeher own life. Learning to recognize the warning signs ofsuicidal behavior is essential. “If you believe that a friend orfamily member is suicidal, you can play a role in suicideprevention by pointing out the alternatives, showing thatyou care, and getting a doctor or psychologist involved.”(HelpGuide.org)
There are many sources, such as HelpGuide.org, Sui-cide Awareness Voices of Education, and The Ameri-can Foundation of Suicide Prevention to name a few.
They can offer you guidance in how to engage/approachsomeone you believe may be suicidal. “Suicide is one ofthose subjects that many of us feel uncomfortable discuss-ing. If you're the one feeling suicidal, you may be afraid thatyou'll be judged or labeled "crazy" if you open up. Or maybeyou're just convinced that no one could possibly under-stand. It's not much easier for concerned friends and familymembers, who may hesitate to speak up for fear thatthey're wrong or that they'll say the wrong thing.”(HelpGuide.org) You may encounter someone who is sui-cidal anywhere. Don’t be a bystander. Do something andget involved. I live with some regret wondering if there wassomething that I could have done to save my friend fromtaking those two shots to the head. In 2012, firearms werethe most common method of death by suicide, accountingfor a little more than half (50.9%) of all suicide deaths. Thenext most common methods were suffocation (including
hangings) at 24.8% and poisoning at 16.6%. (Ameri-can Foundation of Suicide Prevention) My friend’slife ended in tragedy. A life that was gone too soon.Unfortunately, there has been more than one personthat I know that has attempted to commit suicide.“There are an estimated 8 to 25 attempted suicidesto 1 completion.” (Suicide Awareness Voices of Edu-cation) Thankfully, the people I know who attemptedsuicide were unsuccessful and were given appropri-
ate medical treatment. But their attempt on their life affect-ed more than themselves. It affected even more than justtheir friends and family, it affected their job. The time it tookfor emergency medical treatment and the mandated thera-py afterward resulted in lost wages and decreased workproductivity. That work productivity puts a strain on thosepeople who have to step in to carry the load.
Suicide is an “everyone issue”. It affects more thanjust the person who is attempting to take their life. With that being said, the holiday season for the win-
ter is in full effect, be mindful of those who are exhibitingsuicidal behavior. Remember, don’t be a bystander.Choose life.
Let’s Talk About It!

that doesn'tmean that helpisn't wanted.”

Tell us what you do and how long you have been inbusiness?
I am the Chief Executive Officer of Childs Group, where Ispecialize in individual and Business Taxation, as well as,Business Consulting. My first business, Childs Tax &Accounting Solutions was established in 2010 and wascreated to advocate tax rights to individuals. The companyassist clients with all types of tax issues. We offer a freeaudit of the prior three years of taxes to ensure that allrightful deductions are claimed. We also offer services toassist with tax audits and tax settlements. While servicingbusiness owners and doing taxes, I noticed that there was aneed to educate, and create a centralized service to assistwith reducing cost. Within the scope of reducing cost, advocating for the clients is a top priority. We are here to bea one stop shop for the needs of our clients. ChildsBusiness Solutions was created in 2014 to fulfill my visionin Charlotte NC to assist small to medium businesses. Weoffer an array of cost efficient services from taxation, business consulting, marketing, accounting services(payroll and bookkeeping), insurance, and print services.
What is your overall mission for your company(s)?
Both businesses were created with the goal of educatingthe public, as well as, to assist individuals with taxation. We also our goal is to encourage entrepreneurship.
What made you want to get into this profession(s)?
After college, I moved to Glen Allen, VA. I met anaccountant who was in need of someone assisting him withbuilding his firm. I realized I enjoyed helping him andneeded to do the same. As time progressed, I realizedthere was a huge lack of understanding in taxation in thepublic. The impact of assisting people was heartwarmingand made me more passionate to provide more services.
After the tragic death of my father, I moved to Charlotte,NC. I began servicing more businesses and noticed theymay have been great at their services or product, butlacked various components of business. Which for some, impacted business greatly. I began to educate owners andassisting them with various accounting services and humanresources.
Who has been your biggest inspiration?
I have two inspirations. The first is my son. I had him at ayoung age and was determined to not be a statistic. Iwanted to be someone who was productive and a greatinspiration to others. He has experienced what college andeven studying aboard is like. I try to give him as many life
experiences as possible so he can know there is anabundance of opportunities to use his God given talents.Building a business is not easy by far. Also, I had theopportunity to talk to my father before his death. He askedthat if he ever passed, the family would remain as a unity. So my other inspiration is my family.
What has been one of your biggest challenges? How did you overcome it?
I am somewhat of an introvert. Sales and networking wasfeared in the beginning. I read several books and was givenadvice by some great business owners within Charlotte andthe Hampton Roads area.
What has been the most rewarding since starting yourbusiness?
The look on someone's face when I tell them their taxationissue is resolved. I enjoy helping people. I hire people eachyear and introduce them to my world of taxation which givesthem more perspective, and the ability to help others.
In your profession what is one thing you have noticedthat you would like to see more business owners do?
I would like more business owners to file their taxes and runtheir business for longevity. There are so many resourcesto help businesses reach the next level but it starts with thefoundation of the business.
What are your future plans?
My future plans are to expand into large cities such asAtlanta and the DMV areas. My services are beneficial inany state. We currently have the capability of completingtaxes in any state conveniently. I am looking forward tomarketing this service as a national service. My vision is forChilds Tax to become the modern business model for theworking class.
What would you say to someone wanting to start theirown business but not knowing where to begin?
I would suggest you research the market and get a goodidea of what it entails (i.e. competitors, target customers, vendors, etc). Most small businesses start with having alimited budget. It is important to understand your strategy tokeep operational cost efficient. My motto is "Live, Eat, andSleep your vision and never give up." Continuouslyreinvent your ideas as you run into challenges. Also havefaith! Our tax service is a national service. We have officesconveniently in Charlotte, NC, Norfolk and Chesapeake,VA. Our website is www.childsgrp.com.

Job & Finances
What inspired you to start a modeling career, and howlong have you been in the modeling industry?
I started modeling approximately 15 years ago as a fit modelfor a department store in my local area, after beingapproached by the store CEO while shopping with mydaughter. After a lot of encouragement from a close friendand a few photos which were taken at home, I worked upenough courage to take the next step. I contacted a modelingagency with my photos, measurements and height. Within 24hours, I had a phone call to come into Sydney, Australiawhere l signed with Ozana Model Management as a modeland actress. Why did I start modeling and acting? It is still asclear as the day when I decided. It was a passing commentmade during a conversation, “Why would you want to putyourself through the shame & embarrassment to be labeledas a plus size model?” I was taken back and explained, “Forthat exact reason, I am a natural woman with healthy curves, and we all should be able to be comfortable in our own skinwithout judgement. If we cannot love and embrace that weare unique and beautiful, no one else will!” She shook herhead in horror and stated fat is fat and no one likes it! Thatwas an extremely narrow minded, judgmental anduneducated opinion. The conversation happened 15 yearsago, and I still feel as strong, if not stronger today.
What are some big projects you have done over thecourse of your modeling and acting career?
I have been blessed to have worked as a fit model with somebig leading designers in the plus size industry and as astraight model size 14-18. I love and have found it to be arewarding experience to be involved in the process from startto finish, seeing the designs hit the department stores, knowing I played a small part in the process. I have workedwith some amazing makeup artists, and love what makeuphas to offer with the texture, color, and how it makes you feel. While working with various makeup lines, I came toappreciate makeup on a deeper level, as it enhances andcontrast our natural beauty. I also fell in love with conceptmake-up. I did some work in 2011 based on blue crystalswhile working with a fantastic photographer Sean H Choe. Some of my other big achievements was being selected as anactress to work with Australian Channel 7 on the televisionseries ‘Beauty and the Geek’ in 2010. Also I was a featuredprint model with a two page full spread in “Queen SizeMagazine” in January 2014.

Getting to Know Melica Barnett
What are some of the differences you have notice betweenAustralia and the U.S. when it comes to the modelingindustry?
Wow, that is a big question! Of course this is my opinion only.Personally, I see a lot of difference between Australia and theUnited States. Plus Size Modeling is a growing industry whichhas jumped leaps and bounds over the past 15 years, withacceptance throughout the world. I have found within Australiawe have tighter guidelines with our Plus Size Models. The ModelCriteria here within Australia for models is between 5’8” and6’0” (appropriate. 174cm to 185cm) tall. Sizes 10-18, Ages 16-35, with of course healthy clean skin, hair, and teeth. As far asproportions, as a general rule, your waist should be around teninches smaller than your hips, however, there are exceptions toevery rule. Australia has gorgeous Plus Size Models which graceour catalogues each week, and walk in plus size events. I wouldpersonally love to see Australia widen their comfort zone when itcomes to Plus Size Modeling, and one day for all countries tocome together. I personally embrace U.S. and love the diversity ofwomen of all shapes and sizes who are modeling. It is amazinghow America has embraced the healthy natural woman bringingretailers, designers, hair stylist, and makeup artist together tohighlight Plus Size Fashion Weeks. I truly love and embrace theshift of seeing a positive and healthy body image, with a diverserange of gorgeous curvy plus size models hitting runway! Thisoffers a wide range of fabulous trends that are stylish for alloccasions. I truly believe that plus size designers are starting torule the fashion industry. This embraces a new mindset of theaverage woman with natural and beautiful curves. How amazingto see designers finally catching on to real women of all sizes.
What are your overall goals and missions in life?
I absolutely love to be challenged and step out of my comfortzone. I am extremely motivated! I strive and continue to promoteeveryone coming to peace within their own skin, no matter theirsize. Also helping others find those amazing wings and learn tofly as confident, strong, and unique individuals. The secret toperfect health and self-acceptance is not found in a diet pill, shake, surgery, and etc. It is actually a healthy balance of goodnutrition, exercise, rest and relaxation which helps provide ahealthy body, mind, and soul. One of my long-term goals it toestablish my life-coaching consulting business to help everyone, especially younger teens and young adults. This will help them tosee that they are individuals with their own beauty and future, without the pressures of society telling them what they SHOULDbe. Each one of us are exactly who we are, and we can do whatwe want to. Success is in us, and we can control it!
Besides modeling and acting, what other things do you do?
I am always on the go! I work full-time as a community nurse 5-6days a week. I have also just started my own business as a LifeSkills and Wellness Coach, as well as a Nutritional Therapist, which I am very excited about! This year alone I have completed
three courses ‘Diet & Beauty,” “Starting your own Business,”and “Marketing your Business.” I am halfway through my nextcourse, “Skin and Body Care.” I also am a contributor writer forSO Magazine (Size Overrated), which is one of my mostrewarding achievements to date. In my down time, I love spendingquality time with my children, partner and friends. I alsomeditate, exercise, relax, and practice a healthy diet ,whichallows me to stay positive and grounded!
Who have been your biggest supporters?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from myamazing children, Dillon, Corey and Bianca. They keep me verygrounded with their strength, and love for life, as I watch themachieve milestones and grow into amazing young adults. Myother amazing support system is my partner Tere who has beenwith me every step of the way with my new journey in life.Through all the twist, turns, and bumps, he continues to be myrock, and sounding board. He believes and supports all of mydreams and goals. He also has kept me extremely grounded by hisunconditional love and support!
What has been the biggest obstacle in your life and how didyou overcome it?
My world changed forever in October of 2010. It was a Mondaymorning when I found out my husband had taken his life bysuicide. This was the most confusing, confronting, and lonelyjourney of my life. I didn’t know where to run or even if there wasa safe place which existed. My emotions were endless, and all lcould do was scream, cry, and beg for it not to be true. Thefollowing weeks, months and even years I have battled with theendless nightmare within me. The feeling was like a silent killingdisease where I could hardly breath. No one could feel it exceptme. Every inch of my soul would scream with intense pain of somany mixed emotions. Every day, I would see the same confusionin my children’s eyes. I went back to work a week after myhusband’s passing. Life goes on and does not stop for anyone!Anniversaries came and went, my children continued to moveforward without missing a beat, and so did I (so I thought). But Iwas still living that day each night when I closed my eyes. Enoughwas enough, and I needed to rebuild my life, not only for myself, but for my children. I had the support from a couple of closefriends. I started counting my blessings and yes, I had so many tobe thankful for! I started looking forward to a future reclaimingmy life as a total person, learning to trust my judgements. I waslearning life with a new twist. I now live in a place of completegratitude and I never take a blessing for granted. I am determinedto be healthy and the best vision of me, appreciating how far Ihave come. But most of all, I have given my husband peace. Nolonger am I angry with him. It is important for my children andmyself to have a healthy relationship with him still, even thoughhe is not here physically. He lives on through my children andthey are the most amazing gift I could ever ask for in life.

What advice can you give other plus models trying to make it in the industry?
I personally believe the shift is finally here in Plus Size Modeling. I am a firm believer in having a proactiveand positive attitude. Plus Size Modeling is just as competitive as any other modeling field. Having thepassion, desire, dedication, and determination are all important. Look after yourself physically, mentallyand spiritually. It is important to remain focused with realistic goals. Be confident and become friends withthe camera. If you are new and never had any professional photos taken, ask a friend or loved one to workwith you. Try different poses, look through magazines for different ideas. Remember that everyone isdifferent and unique. Everyone falls into different criterias within the modeling field from commercialmodeling, lifestyle modeling, fashion, print (magazines & catalogues, web etc), to television commercials, infomercial’s and trade shows promotions. I have worked with quite a few photographers, makeup artists, directors, and television-set people. They have all stated the same thing. It is important to have a positiveattitude and good personality that is likable, adaptable and easy to work with. Also be punctual and readyto work.
I have worked for an agency and independently, and both have pros and cons. It is a personal preference.Being signed with a modeling agency means you have signed a contract that they will represent you. Thisdoes NOT guarantee you work. When signing any contract make sure you read it all, including the fineprint. If you have a lawyer or a friend who understands the lingo, you have every right to take the contracthome and go through it with someone. Today, I have my partner read through all my contracts. Whileunder contract, it is possible to be booked on your own, and it is possible you will need to pay a 10% - 20%fee of what you earned since you are signed with them. So read all fine print. Agency work is an amazingway to break into the industry. Working independently requires you to do your OWN bookings and registeryourself as a business. It can be rewarding and amazing. Having a good mind for business is important, because you will be signing all your own contracts. Again, if you are not 100% confident and understandthe lingo, please have someone you trust or a lawyer read and explain it to you before signing it. Most ofall, relax, have fun, and enjoy your new positive, and exciting journey!

What inspired you to try out for a pageant?
I was actually referred to the pageant by a friend, who lives inMaryland. Maryland has a Stateside competition, and shewas wondering if we had one in Virginia, which we didn't. Iactually won my title through a interview process with theDirector of the Miss Plus America Pageant, Mr. PhillipMichael Bailey. Being in a pageant is something I've wantedto do since I was a little girl watching pageants. I neverthought I would be able to do anything like this. I am SOexcited and blessed to have this opportunity!
What is your current title?
My current title is "Ms. Virginia Plus America 2015"
What do you have planned next?
HA! I am taking this thing one experience at a time. I would, however, really like to use this as an opportunity to do moremotivational speaking to young people, especially younggirls. I know growing up, I didn't have anyone that looked likeme that I could look up to and relate to. I believe everyoneshould feel beautiful, and that starts with learning to trulyLOVE yourself, no matter what.
How do you plan on representing your title?
I plan on representing my title by doing as many things out inthe community as I can. I want to promote my platform:Suicide Prevention through the empowerment of positive self-esteem and self image, no matter what your size. There areyoung people out here hurting and feeling unsure of whattheir purpose is, they are bullied, teased, and they getdepressed. I want to show them that, you don't have to bewhat they say you are, you can be anything that you want tobe. Girls that love themselves more, make better decisions, and are less likely to be depressed or even have thoughts ofsuicide. YOUR voice has to be louder than anyone else.YOUR voice should always speak in Victory!
What are your overall future plans?
Well, the Sky is the Limit :-) I have been "prepared" for this,so I am ready for whatever direction God leads me in.
Are there ways people can help you with your journey?
YES! YES! YES! We are raising money to have a statesidepageant here in Virginia next year. We already have peopletraining to be state directors, and talking to possible venues. These pageants are big in other states, and they bring a lot ofopportunities for not only the contestants in the pageant, butlocal businesses within the area where the pageant is held.Any donations are tax deductible and will go towards helpingme compete nationally in Atlanta, August 1st in the Ms. PlusAmerica Pageant and towards a Miss, Ms., Mrs. and maybeeven a Miss Teen Virginia Plus America stateside pageant for2016!!
How can we follow what you do?
You can follow me on Facebook atfacebook.com/msvirginiaplus2015 and my website iswww.mistyfrostva.net. You can make donations on that site, and I am also selling ad space as tax deductible donations forbusinesses to further market themselves. You can also go tomy business website www.mistyfrost.net.

Healthy Skin &
How FoodAffects ItWritten by: Brenda Henderson
The skin with the average weight of 8-10 pounds in adultsis the outer covering of the body. It is the largest organ ofthe body. The skin has multiple layers of ectodermal
tissue which guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligamentsand internal organs.
Day to day and year-to-year skin convey its healthy glowfrom good nutrition. Even though acne and wrinkles havedifferent causes and occur at different times in your life, nutritioncan help minimize or prevent both problems and enhance theskin’s natural beauty. By eating the right foods you can minimizeand even prevent common skin problems.
We hear it all the time, it is a basic rule of thumb that cannotbe emphasized enough, the importance of water for the skin’shealth and beauty. Water helps to flush out the toxins andallows the smooth flow of nutrients into the cells. It also keepsyour organs functioning at their best. In addition, cells that arewell hydrated are plump and full, which means, the skin looksfirmer and clearer.
Although liquids are the main source of water there are manyfoods that have high water content and can contribute to youroverall hydration. The following foods are at least 75 percentwater by weight and should be included in your regular healthyskin regimen. These foods are: apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cranberries, grapes, kiwi, lemon, limes, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, papaya, peaches, pears, pineapples, plums, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, artichokes, asparagus, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, onions, peas, rhubarb, bellpeppers, squash and tomatoes.
Sugar is the anti-aging enemy number one, especially inwomen. Refined sugar isn’t just bad for your health, it is bad foryour skin also. Eating too much sugar causes glycation, aprocess that occurs when your body has excessive amounts ofsugar. This effects the normal function of your cells as theexcess sugar molecules join together with protein molecules tocreate products that are foreign to your body also known asadvanced glycation end products or AGEs. These AGEs affectthe collagen and elastin, causing them to break down. As a resultwrinkles and lines form on your face.
Antioxidants are the best defense against free radical damage ofoxidation and a diet rich in vitamins C, E, and A nourishes andprotects the skin, extending its youthful appearance. Vitamin Cis found naturally in the skin and helps in the production ofcollagen and protects cells from free radical damage. Somefoods that have vitamin C include guava, bell peppers, oranges, orange juice, grapefruit, grapefruit juice, strawberries, pineapple, papaya, lemons, lemon juice, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, kidney beans, kiwi, cantaloupe, cauliflower, cabbage, mangoes, white potato, mustard greens, tomatoes, peas, snow peas, clementine, rutabagas, turnip greens, raspberries, blackberries, watermelon, okra and summer squash.
Vitamin E protects cell membranes and guards against UVradiation damage. According to some research it is believed thatvitamin E may work with vitamin C to provide an extra boost ofanti-aging skin protection. Foods rich in vitamin E are almonds, almond butter, sunflower seeds, sunflower butter, wheat germ, hazelnuts, spinach, dandelion greens, Swiss chard, pine nuts, peanuts, peanut butter, turnip greens, beet greens, broccoli, flaxseed oil, red bell peppers, collard greens, avocados, olive oil,and mangoes.
Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that safeguards the skindamage and delays the aging by protecting skin quality andelasticity. Foods best for selenium are: Brazil nuts, crab, oysters, lean beef, cod, shrimp, mushrooms, eggs, skinless chicken orturkey, brown rice, whole wheat pastas and breads, low-fat, fat-free 1% cottage cheese and tuna canned light.
Beta-carotene is critical for skin health and is converted tovitamin A in the body to aid in the repair of body tissuesincluding the skin. Foods to eat with beta-carotene includessweet potatoes, carrots, kale, butternut squash, turnip greens, pumpkin, mustard greens, cantaloupe, red bell peppers, apricots,Chinese cabbage, spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard, watercress, pin and red grapefruit, watermelon, cherries, mangoes, tomatoes, asparagus, red cabbage and romaine, greenleaf and red leaf lettuce.

The skin contains about six percent of all the body’s zinc. This mineral is necessary for protecting cell membranes andhelps to maintain the collagen. Collagen is what keeps the skinfirm. People who have severe zinc deficiencies may developredness, scaling and lesions. Foods rich in zinc are oysters, lobster, lean beef, crab, lean lamb, clams, mussels, pumpkinseeds, fat-free, low-fat yogurt, pork tenderloin, pine nuts, cashews, peanuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, pecans, skinless chicken or turkey especially the dark meat, and beanssuch as black, navy, pinto, kidney, black-eyed peas, lima beansand edamame.
Healthy fats known as omega-3 fatty acids help maintain cellmembranes so that they are effective openings that allow waterand nutrients in, and keep toxins out. Omega-3 has also beenshown to protect skin against sun damage. A recent skin cancerstudy showed that in sunny skin scorching southeasternclimates, people who ate diets rich in fish oils and otheromega-3 fats, had a 29 percent lower risk of cell skin cancer, than those who got very little omega from food.
Best foods to eat to get your omega-3 fatty acids are wild freshsalmon (or canned salmon), herring, mackerel, sardines, rainbow trout, pacific oysters, chia seeds, ground flaxseed, walnuts, seaweed, walnut oil and flaxseed oil.
Drinks are also a key aspect of your diet and can contribute tothe health and beauty of your skin. The body absorbs aboutfour ounces of water every ten minutes. Therefore, water isessential to help maintain the elasticity and suppleness of theskin. Water is known to also prevent dryness in the skin.
For those who find the taste of water boring, perhaps addingfresh mint leaves, slices of strawberries, apples, lemons orlimes to a jug of water would be helpful.
If you are not a fan of cold water try adding juice from asqueezed lemon or lime. By adding the juice of one lemon to acup of warm water taken in the morning on an empty stomachcan act as a fantastic liver detoxifier.
The best way to know if you are drinking enough water is tolook at your urine. It should be a very light shade of yellow orpale white in color. If it is darker increase the amount of wateryou drink.
Tea is another good option for hydration. Teas contain naturalcompounds known as polyphenols that have antioxidantproperties.
Green tea comes from leaves that are not fermented and is saidto have the highest level of polyphenols. Green tea protectssun damage by quenching free radicals and reducinginflammation rather than by blocking UV rays which slowsdown the development of signs of aging to help rejuvenateskin.
Black tea is made from the same leaves as green tea; however, black tea can come in flavors such as sweet, spicy and evenchocolate. Black tea contains ten times more antioxidants thanwhat is found in fruits and vegetables. It also contains aflavinsand thearubigens that contribute to your general health. Itcontains more caffeine than green tea, so watch the time of dayyou drink it. Avoid adding milk to black tea as it reduces theantioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Oolong tea is a rich polyphenol tea that can help preventseveral skin problems including eczema and wrinkles.
Juices made from 100% fruits and vegetables are full ofbeneficial vitamins for the skin. While tasting sweet and tangy, they can have the power of cleansing out the bad toxins in yoursystem. You can make the juices yourself or buy them pre-made. However, try those highest in antioxidants, such aspomegranate or blueberry.
Want to add moisture to your skin? Snack on walnuts, addthem to your salads, vegetable dishes, or just eat a handful.
Salmon helps zap zits. Too little of the omega-3 acid can causeacne. Try sardines or flaxseed too.
Fine lines can be fixed with eggs. Eggs are high in lutein andzeaxanthin that strengthen the cells and helps to smooth finelines and wrinkles. Lutein can also build the elastin.
Avocados add glow to skin. They have natural oils that helphydrate the skin. They are rich in vitamin C, E and luteinnutrients that have anti-inflammatory anti-aging properties.
Red peppers have tons of vitamin C and stimulate the collagenthat protects against aging.
Lastly, foods that can protect against sunburn containcarotenoids. Those foods are carrots, spinach, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe and mango. Remember, no food canreplace wearing sunscreen everyday!

I often see articles about things that go wrong in marriage relationships. While it is good to know what to look out for so youcan avoid mistakes, not many people talk about what to look for to make a marriage work. My marriage is working. We areboth happily married. I know by the only sure way to know, I asked her.
Early in my career as a psychotherapist I was doing couples therapy and the husband remarked that, “all married couples havearguments. I told him that’s not necessarily true. When I went home that night I asked my wife, Maxine, when was the last time wehad an argument. She said about 10 years ago. This conversation occurred in 1997. We haven’t had an argument since 1987 to thisday in 2015. Does this mean that we always agree on everything? No, we don’t. While we agree on the most important things inour lives such as religion, money, child rearing, fidelity, there are times when we have distinct differences of opinion. However, neither one of us have compelling needs to insist we agree on everything. In other words there are times when we can agree todisagree. But it takes more than this to be happily married.

In my first book, “Psychology from Scripture” I devote a chapteron relationships. Choosing a mate is one of the most importantchoices we will make. It will be the best thing that can happen orthe worst thing you have ever done. It is seldom in between. It ismuch too important to leave to chance, attraction or lust. As Imention in this chapter there are only two types of romanticrelationships. It’s not really all that complicated. There is the“Long-term Marriage Relationship” and the “ Short-termRecreational Relationship.”
The long term relationship is the one that leads to marriage. It isbuilt on character and terms. Character is who we are. Withcharacter long term relationships are based on integrity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry andeverything else in God’s definition of love (First Corinthians 13).Then there is the other type of relationship.
The Short-term Recreational Relationship is based ontangible and superficial qualities such as; sexiness, party person, handsomeness, beauty, good dresser, status, money, cars and the like. Short termrelationships are built on personality. Personality isoften what we use to get our way or manipulate others.Short term relationships often serve useful purposes. They can be fun and adventurous learning experiences.Love plays a major part in the relationship.
According to Dr. Peck in his book “The Road Less Traveled” hesuggests that, falling in love is like a psychological brainwashingof lust. This psychological phenomenon is designed to attract menand women together. Probably all relationships begin this way. However, we can choose to be in love instead of only falling inlove. Often times lust and falling in love is the process of beingattracted to who we want or think is the person of our dreams. After a while when we begin to see the forest of trees, we realizeour mate is not perfect, not our clone, not the most brilliant, clever, pretty or handsome person on the planet. You are now in theprocess of removing the facade you have superimposed on yourmate and now see him or her for who they really are. You arefalling out of love.
In a long-term relationship we do not try to change a person, but in adjusting to another in a marriage relationship, webecome loving. This is the work of marriage. Loving, unlikefalling in love, requires effort. Being loving involves the workof investing time and energy into another for their mate’spersonal growth and development. The real work is to be lovingeven when you don’t feel like it. Falling in love may get you to
the alter or justice of the peace, but being loving will get you toyour 50th wedding anniversary. One last thing to know aboutbeing happily married is unconditional love.
According to Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D. in his book “Happier,”“unconditional love is the foundation of a happy relationship.Unconditional love creates a circle of happiness. If someone trulyloves another they will want to give their mate the opportunity toexpress their core self and will draw out those qualities that makeyour mate who she or he really is.”
A relationship is a transaction in the ultimate currency. Theultimate currency is happiness. It is why we do what we do. Likeevery transaction, the more profitable a relationship is for bothpeople, the more likely it is to flourish. When one mate isconstantly giving up meaning and pleasure so the other can havemore of both, partners end up less happy. In order to feel satisfiedwithin a relationship, we have to feel that the transaction is
equitable. The relationship’s equity is measured in theultimate currency. Both must be happier for beingtogether. Sex is also very important.
While familiarity can lead to decreased physicalexcitement, growing very familiar with your partner, and getting to truly know them can also lead to higherlevels of intimacy. Sex can get better if we focus onknowing, and being known by our partner.
To cultivate genuine intimacy, the focus in a relationship mustshift from the desire to be validated-seeking approval and praised,to the desire to be known. Love and passion in a relationship willgrow over time if both partners are willing to be known, and thismeans gradually disclosing their innermost selves, their desires,
fears, fantasies, and dreams, even when those are notcomplimentary. Being togetherbecomes so much moremeaningful and pleasurablewhen our focus shifts fromvalidation to knowing and beingknown.
I don’t know if there is onlyone person on the planet meantfor you. What I do know isthat you can be happilymarried if you are determinedto cultivate the relationshipyou have chosen.

ost people lose ten pounds with this surgery,”
the surgeon said.
Since I’m not “most people,” I lost 13 pounds following
intestinal-abdominal surgery last October.
I dreaded weight loss more than I dreaded the six-inch
incision. But now that my 5 ft. 9 in. frame weighed in at a mere
132 pounds, I knew I had to do something to regain, not only
pounds, but rebuild strength, confidence and self-esteem.
My fear of weight loss began as a teenager when I lost 20
pounds, due to a long commute to a summer job from Staten
Island to Columbia University at 116th Street Manhattan. The
oppressive subway and city heat melted the pounds away.
When I returned to college following that summer, one
young man said, “You’d look better if you gained some
weight.”
To this day, his remark and subsequent negative remarks
about my weight, or lack thereof, haunt me.
My weight plummets when I’m anxious. If there’s a
stressful situation approaching, like public speaking, or an
upcoming lifestyle change, I tend to pre-worry. Although I

foods, since my cholesterol is already high. So, that leaves
protein and muscle building to maintain a weight that will
silence the un-called-for comments.
My tall, thin frame comes from Dad. With the
combination of genetics and high anxiety, I probably don’t
stand a chance to gain a lot of weight…ever! If I get sick, or
someone in the family dies, there go five pounds in a week –
guaranteed!
My surgery in October involved not eating solids for five
days. The idea of drinking clear liquids and the fear of
plummeting weight, only rekindled my past of dealing with
Thin.
I also love to swim in the pool surrounded by friends and
the therapeutic comfort of warm water. But, remembering an
incident six years ago when I’d lost weight due to sickness,
pool acquaintances had no problem calling this to my attention,
making me feel even worse about my skinny appearance. This
time around, I’d be fully loaded emotionally and mentally
before I’d put on a swim suit and jump in the pool.
So, how does a person regain 13 pounds? This sounds like
an easy task to the average American who struggles to keep
weight at the recommended Body Mass Index of 21 or 22.
During a post-op doctor’s visit, besides eating three meals a
day, the doctor suggested I purchase a supply of protein bars
and also drink three Muscle Milks a day. Muscle Milk
contains 40 percent protein, an important ingredient for body
building.
I asked, “What about physical therapy (PT) to rebuild lost
muscle?”
With that, the doctor referred me to a physical therapist.
The PT asked, “Did your doctor suggest PT or did you?”
“I did,” I said.
She now knew she had a willing and motivated patient to
work with.
My exercises included stretching bands to develop triceps,
biceps, shoulders, upper back and chest muscles. She even
threw in an exercise to rebuild leg quadriceps. I began with
five repetitions a day with each exercise, increasing it to 12
reps.
I also walk in our neighborhood to increase stamina, per
the PT’s instructions.
My appetite, now fully restored, consists of a diet of
salmon, mashed potatoes, green beans, salads, pasta, or turkey
or chicken dinners. To ingest more calories, I also eat every 1
½ to 2 hours…snacks such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, cheese
and crackers.
I admitted to the PT my biggest challenge during this
rebuilding process. I had to put on that bathing suit and jump
in the pool. We set a date for that to happen. I was physically
more than ready, but mentally, didn’t have a good defense to
the remarks that would fly. I bit the bullet and returned to the
pool two weeks before our agreed-upon date, armed with a
good offense.
“I see you didn’t gain any weight,” said the first swimmer
I met.
I did not acknowledge this remark and quickly responded,
“How are you? Good to see you!”
That was the one and only comment about my weight. No
one else said a thing but rejoiced that I was back in my
element.
Today, eight months post surgery, I’m happy to announce
I weigh in at 145 pounds. I’ve regained the lost 13 pounds in
the form of increased upper body muscle and, yes, fat in the
stomach area! I’ve also returned to a happy, positive state.
Whether folks are thin resulting from chemotherapy,
surgery or just plain genes, know that the body has amazing
abilities to heal itself, along with the help of experts in the
field.

The Floetry Duo Back Together Again!
It is hard to believe that it has been nine years since Marsha Ambrosius and TheFloacist aka Natalie Stewart performed together onstage as Floetry! The two who hadbig hits such as "Say Yes," and "Getting Late," reunited for a Reunion Tourworldwide! Size Overrated Magazine and BeMe Images provided coverage at one oftheir concerts on July 7, 2015 at the NorVa in Norfolk VA.
Once the duo hit the stage, they automatically put the crowd in this smooth, laid back, neo soul vibes. It was amazing listening to The Floacist spitting flows of the realitiesof life while Marsha sang with her high octave voice, making the connection betweenthe two euphoric. The crowd was grooving, bobbing their heads back and forth, letting the words sink in, taking them to a place of reflection. The duo ended the showgetting the crowd jumping as they performed jams from back in the 80’s and 90’s!
There are so many unanswered questions about where they have been, are they gettingback together for another album, what are the future plans, etc? The amazing thing is, Size Overrated Magazine had thehonor and the privilege to sit down with the ladies and have a one on one conversation that answered those questions.
One of the first things I asked them was how it felt to be back on stage together again. Marsha explained to us that beingback on stage together was the easy part, it comes natural to them. The duo’s friendship started twenty to thirty years priorto them doing music together. I also asked them what made them wait nine years to do another Floetry Concert. Marshastated they did not want to over saturate the market so the thirst can be real! When I asked about feature plans, or if thereare any albums in the making. Natalie responded by saying they are just enjoying the moment. Back in their twenties theirfocus was on making albums. But now families, helping others, making albums, being business women, writing books, andcontinuing to write songs are the things they are focused on!
