From the Pastor I think living as we do in Southern California, especially so close to the coast, we have a physically very healthy parish as a whole (don't worry, Fr. Ben and I are starting a diet and exercise program soon and before long we'll look like chiseled sculptures). When it comes to physical fitness there is a saying, "Use it or lose it." That is to say if one does not keep up with his or her exercise muscle mass and endurance will wane. This is particularly true for us who are getting older and whose metabolisms are slowing down. But the same holds true for the spiritual parts of our natures. If we stay active in prayer (the greatest being the Eucharist), self discipline (fasting and exercise of virtue), and good works (both charity to others and self, i.e. spiritual reading, studying scripture, etc.) then we will generally be in good spiritual shape becoming more and more the saints that God created us to be. On the other hand, if we are slack in prayer, self discipline, and chari-table works we will sooner or later become spiritual couch potatoes with tendrils reaching out only for self satis-faction. When this happens it becomes very difficult to reverse the course of one's life, just as it is when one stops physically exercising. Fear not, there is hope. For God himself, with a love beyond all telling, will aide us if we call upon him. St. Paul tells us the perfect starting place for our own spiritual renewal in the second reading for today's Mass. He says, "Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiv-ing, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is any-thing worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.” Bonus Thought for the Day: Last week we celebrated the Feast of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Archangels as well as the Feast of Guardian An-gels. In the Catechism we read that "As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are per-sonal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness" (CCC No. 330; Dan 10:9-12). As we reflect upon the beauty, power and strength of the angels, we are drawn toward a deeper and clearer un-derstanding of God's love for man; for billions of angels, to be sure, are given personal charge over their own child of God. Every moment of each day, day after day, year after year, our faithful guardian angels stand at our sides, focused on our well-being with far greater power than even we ourselves can summon. The Catechism explains: "From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and interces-sion. 'Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.' Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God" (No. 336). And Pope St. Gregory the Great goes on to say, "You should be aware that the word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels. And so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages. Some angels are given proper names to denote the service they are empowered to perform. In that holy city, where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known. But personal names are assigned to some, not because they could not be known without them, but rather to de-note their ministry when they came among us. Thus, Michael means “Who is like God”; Gabriel is “The Strength of God”; and Raphael is “God’s Remedy.”"

(CCC No. 330; Dan 10:9-12).
