Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the

Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in

search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed

the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which

tradition held was built over the Saviour’s tomb, and

her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre over

the tomb. During the excavation, workers found

three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which

Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a

dying woman.

The cross immediately became an object of

veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in

Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century,

according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out

of its silver container and placed on a table together

with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above

Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass through one by

one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and

the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with

their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move

on."

Knights Korner Council

11729 Our local council here at Holy

Redeemer Church will begin the

2016-17 year with a total of 59 members. We have

been challenged by the head office to add one

member per month. For our group, this is a major

challenge. However, for a parish which has grown to

over 1300 families, we will try and meet this

challenge.

To the men of the parish, I ask for your commitment

to one meeting a month, we have one activity per

month which might be a BBQ, a blood donor clinic,

a parish hall dinner or a concert. As well, we are

committed to our two parish schools and, of course,

our church. Please contact Walter Heeney at 905-

839-7253 or [email protected] for more

information and begin the membership process.
