What does the term “fieldbus “really mean?

In automation technology one makes a distinction between the process control level (central computer), the cell level (PLC to PLC communication) and the FIELD level (sensor /actuator level)

The communication channel is called the BUS, because it is similar to a local bus that travels from stop to stop to collect its passengers, whereas the fieldbus collects and transports information.
