SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNERDear Community Members, As you are reading this article, summer is wrapping up and the new school year is quickly approaching. We are excited to start a new school year and have exciting new things to share with you regarding the 2017-18 school year. Over the summer, we had a change within our administrative team. Starting with the 2017-18 school year, Mr. Denis Quirk will be taking over the leadership position at the

Junior High. I am confident Mr. Quirk will provide the students, parents, and staff great leadership as the students move from elementary school to the junior high and then, as they move to the high school. Mr. Leister will be moving from the junior high school to serve as the high school assistant principal. We also have new programs for our students as we start the year. At the high school, we will roll out laptops to our students in grades 9-12. As I shared with you in a previous

Tulpy Times article, our laptops are instructional tools, which will be used to enhance our instruction and curriculum. We do not want our students using technology all day, or using technology when it is not the right tool for the job. The 2017-18 school year will be the first year for our new Project Lead the Way program. Over the course of

the next three years we will be rolling out new courses in the Project Lead the Way program. The first course in the program we will be offering for our high school students is Principles of Engineering. For our eighth grade students the first course we will be offering is a Design and Modeling course. As a district, we welcome Joseph Ricapito as our new Project Lead the Way teacher.Lastly, over the course of the past two years, as part of our Science Technology Engineering & Math

(STEM) initiative, our elementary level teachers have been bringing students to visit our MakerSpaces. In the MakerSpaces, our students have the opportunity for STEM specific hands-on learning opportunities. As a district, we value the learning opportunities the MakerSpaces provide our students. To ensure all students have instructional time in the MakerSpaces, we are adding the MakerSpaces into the regularly scheduled class time for all elementary grade levels this coming school year. We wish you a safe and relaxing end to your summer, and we look forward to seeing you at the start of the school

year.Rob Schultz, Ed.D.Superintendent

BETHEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLThe month of May was a very busy time at Bethel Elementary School. Our students were attending field trips and students

were participating in multiple chorus and band concerts. Additionally, the elementary musical took place and the Mobile Ag Lab was set up in our parking lot for all students to visit and learn about the agriculture industry. Our students also participated in our annual field day event.

Though our students were busy, we also managed to squeeze in a special event that will help us remember our past, but also move our students forward in building new friendships and relationships. On May 22, 2017, we had a special presentation where the Buddy Benches were installed and dedicated to the students of Bethel Elementary School. The Buddy Benches were installed on the blacktop area on the playground. The purpose of Buddy Benches is so that all students have someone to play and interact with during recess. If a student does not have someone to play with on the playground, they can go to the Buddy Bench. Sitting on the Buddy Bench signifies that a student is looking for a game to join or a friend to play with them.

Early in the 2016-2017 school year, one of our former teachers, Mrs. Schwalm, lost her battle with cancer. In true form, her family wanted to give back to the school and provide something that could be used by students for years to come. Through many meetings with Mr. Schwalm, we decided to purchase Buddy Benches with funds provid-ed by the Schwalm family. These benches have already been put to good use and will serve as a memory and a legacy for our beloved friend and colleague, Mrs. Debra Schwalm. Our students will use these benches to build lasting friendships and memories, just as Mrs. Schwalm would have wanted.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT PENN-BERNVILLE ELEMENTARY?We had a very busy 4th quarter at Penn-Bernville. While students finished their academics for this year, they participated in

many exciting events. All students participated in field day and our chorus and band students performed in the Spring Concerts. Our very talented 6th grade class performed the Lion King Jr. musical and did an excellent job. I would like to thank all of you for your support and hard work to make the 2016-2017 school year great. I am looking forward to another great school year next year.

WELCOME! SHERRY WESSNERHUMAN RESOURCE/PAYROLL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

I am very happy to be here at Tulpehocken School District! Everyone has been very kind to me, been very patient with me, and welcomed me with all good wishes. It is my wish to make Human Resources a smooth process for everyone and a support for all employees so that they may all be able to do their best for the children of our school district.

On a personal note my greatest joy is my family. I am the mother of two grown children, a boy and a girl. I always say a million dollar family – I will never have a million dollars but they a worth a million to me (really more). I also have two beautiful grandchildren – one of each – they are the “Lights of my Life.” In my spare time I love the out-doors – especially time in the mountains.

MEBC 6TH GRADE BAND FESTIVALFive elementary band students were chosen to participate in The Music Educators of

Berks County annual festival. The concert was held on Saturday, March 25th, at Oley Valley Middle School.

Our students combined with many other Berks county 6th graders for rehearsal and a spectacular concert that afternoon. The audience was treated with a variety of music covering many genres. Dr. Scott Watson was the guest conductor. Dr. Watson teaches at the Parkland School District and is a nationally known composer of music for this level.

Pictured students are from left to right: Bella Headley, Marley Trommatter, Peter Jackson, David Bednarczyk, and Lauren Bryant.

SUMMER MOVIE WITH MRS. CIPOLLAAll Penn-Bernville students are welcome to join Mrs. Cipolla for a movie and snack on August 14th from 2-3:30 pm. A parent

or guardian must sign students in and out at the cafeteria door (door 7).

HAMLET RETURNS TO THE TULPY STAGEOn May 1, the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theater made a second appearance in four years to perform William Shakespeare’s

great tragedy “Hamlet”. In attendance to view the 90 minute abbreviated production were twelfth grade and ESL students who read the play in their English classes as well as students involved with the fall play. Six actors portrayed 12 roles on the stage, using colored scarves as sashes to differentiate between the different characters. The role of Hamlet was the only character who did not double since he is the main character of the tragedy. In addition, props such as a few box stools and hand props were used to enhance the language; this was the same as in Shakespeare’s day. With an understanding of the play, the student audience was able to use their imaginations and fill in the details. Following the performance, a question and answer period was provided for the students to get to know the actors’ backgrounds and motivations behind their characters in the play. Once again, this proved to be a valuable and unique experience for the students because they were able to witness firsthand a Shake-speare performance live on stage, something many of them might not ever get to do. After all, Shakespeare’s words were meant to be enjoyed in front of an audience!

TITLE I APPLICATION It is the intent of the Tulpehocken Area School District to apply for Title I Federal Programs Funding for the 2017-2018

school year. Title I funding is provided to individual school buildings to provide supplemental core academic instruction, support, and parental involvement. The funding is awarded to schools based on the number of students in the building who qualify for free and reduced lunch. In 2017-2018, both Bethel Elementary and the Tulpehocken Junior-Senior High School qualify to apply for this funding.

The success of all of our students is our highest priority. Title I funding helps us to provide supplemental instruction and support for our students who are in need of additional support to be successful.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWSThe National Honor Society(NHS) finished the year with our Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. The theme this year was

“Italy” and featured food and decorations from that region. NHS students delivered morning snacks to teachers and helped teachers with duties. Of course the lunch was the main attraction. Teachers ate in a makeshift Italian cafe and said the food was “delizioso.”

Service is one of the aims of NHS and this years group had a total of 1160 service hours! That does not include the hours given for group service projects. Remember anyone can volunteer over the sum-mer, pay it forward within your community.

Congratulations to the graduating seniors. Best of luck in your future, continue to do good things. Keep working hard and uphold the aims of National Honor Society: Service, Scholarship, Leadership, and Character. Tulpehocken gave you a strong foundation, continue to build upon that. Mrs. Susan Weidenheimer (NHS Adviser)

SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR NEW JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTSAUGUST 22, 2017

For many students the transition from the Elementary School to the Junior High School, is difficult. Many students feel over-whelmed by the various tasks and responsibilities and become quite anxious. Some of their concerns include: getting to class on time, finding their lockers and remembering the combination, finding the cafeteria and bathrooms, remembering which class to go to next, fear of getting lost in the building, keeping up with the class work for multiple subjects, and social issues, including peer pressure, cliques, and bullying.

In an effort to help students make a positive transition to the Junior High School, we have developed a Summer Orientation Program. The Junior High Orientation is voluntary and parents are welcome to attend. During the orientation, students will spend time in the Junior High building, learn the location of their homeroom, preview their class schedule, meet teachers, locate their locker and practice the combination. Students will be given a sample agenda sheet and will write down assignments posted in the various Junior High classrooms, to help prepare them for the increased demands of 7th grade. Students will also have a chance to meet their new classmates and engage in fun activities as they learn about the Junior High.

The Summer Orientation Program will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. -11:30 A.M. in the Junior High Building. We will assemble in the Junior-Senior High Auditorium at 9:00 and proceed to the Junior High. Refreshments and a brief orientation to the Junior/Senior High Cafeteria will be held from 11:00 to 11:30 A.M. We look forward to seeing the new 7th grade students. All new Junior High students are encouraged to attend the Orientation Program.

DISTRICT 10 INTERMEDIATE BAND FESTIVALCongratulations to student musicians Kyle Yesner, Jacklyn Burns,

TULPEHOCKEN TEAM PLACES 2ND IN BERKS COUNTY ENVIROTHONEnvirothon participants learned about Pennsylvania’s natural resources and engaged in hands-on training and testing. Stu-

dents learned the basic concepts of how agricultural Best Management Practices and all natural resource areas are interrelated. By providing a lifelong learning experience, these students learned that the Envirothon teaches the importance of maintaining a balance of the quality of life versus the quality of the environment specifically relating to agriculture. In addition, as part of the Envirothon program, students gained an understanding of the importance of promoting soil and water conservation stewardship.

The Berks County Envirothon realized its most number of teams in 2017 since the events inception. One of the Tulpehocken teams placed 2nd out of 20 competing teams.

Team members of Beckie Burns, Chad Mohn, Coty Emerich, Matt Emerick, and Parker Harris garnered the 2nd placing for the 2nd straight year. Team members of Austin Deck, John Kintzer, Victoria Kramer, Katelyn Quillman, and Marissa Spatz rounded out the 6th place team. Caitlin Wernicki, Stephanie Younker, and Seth Etchberger made up the 3rd team representing Tulpehocken in the senior high competition.

The event tested student’s knowledge on the topics of Forestry, Wildlife, Soils, Aquatics, and a current issue of AGRICULTURAL SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION STEW-ARDSHIP.

Throughout the school year students participated in a variety of experiences including an onsite soil pit study, a raptor presentation, a hike of Hawk Mountain, and a wildlife and soil presentation at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area including Game Commission and NRCS staff. Stroud water researchers provided a wealth of stream study of aquatic species and water chemistry evalua-tion. Wildwood Park provided a fantastic birdcall and identification location along with a great review of aquatic, wildlife and forestry specimens and species.

FFA MEMBERS COMPETE AT STATE COMPETITIONActivate Purpose Passion Potential was the theme resounded at the 88th FFA Activities Week and Convention held

June 13-15, 2017 at the Pennsylvania State University. Five students from the Tulpehocken FFA participated in the activities and competitive events. Approximately 1,490 students attended the event.

Kristen John competed in the Dairy Cattle Handlers event, which requires students to demonstrate their ability to exhibit dairy cattle to two judges who evaluated participant’s skills. Contestants where evaluated during four rota-tions with various animals at different ages. Their ability to walk, stand, maintain control as well as appropriate attire were utilized to assess the contestants. Kristen will utilize her skills during fair competitions during the summer.

Victoria Kramer, Jessica Spatz, Caitlin Wernicki and Natalie Grumbine competed against approximately 94 other students from across Pennsylvania. Participants answered written test questions, identified animal breeds, tools and equipment of veterinary science, practiced clinical activities, identified parasites and cells, mathematical calculations, and a team activity concerning the topic of the (veterinary feed directive) VFD’s.

Students attending also had the opportunity to hear a keynote address by National FFA Vice President Ashley Willis as well as key individu-als in the agriculture industry. Hypnotist Russ Clarke and several FFA members participating in the talent competition entertained them.

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)Dear Parents or Guardians:The Tulpehocken Area School District uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for managing insects, rodents,

and weeds. Our goal is to protect every student from pesticide exposure by using an IPM approach to pest management. Our IPM approach focuses on making the school buildings and grounds an unfavorable habitat for these pests by removing food and water sources and eliminating their hiding and breeding places. We accomplish this through routine cleaning and maintenance. We routinely monitor the school buildings and grounds to detect any pests that are present. The pest monitoring team consists of our school personnel. Pest sightings are reported to our IPM coordinator who evaluates the “pest problem” and determines the appropriate pest management techniques to address the problem. The techniques can include increased sanitation, modifying storage practices, sealing entry points, physically removing the pest, etc. From time to time, it may be necessary to use chemicals to manage a pest problem. Chemicals will be used only when neces-

sary, and will not be routinely applied. When chemicals are used, the school will try to use the least toxic product when pos-sible. (Applications will be made only after school hours.) Notices will be posted in these areas 72 hours prior to application and for two days following the application.Parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school may request prior notification of specific pesticide applications made at

the school. To receive notification, you must be placed in the school notification registry. If you would like to be placed on the registry, please notify the district in writing. Please include your e-mail address if you would like to be notified electronically. Please send requests to: Tulpehocken Area School District, 27 Rehrersburg Rd., Bethel, PA 19507, Attention: Rick Triest. If a chemical application must be made to control an emergency pest problem (ex: stinging insects), notice will be provided

by telephone to any parent or guardian who has requested such notification in writing. Exemptions to this notification include disinfectants and anti-microbial products: self-containerized baits placed in areas not accessible to students and gel type baits placed in cracks, crevices or voids. Each year the District will prepare a new notification registry. If you have any questions, please contact Rick Triest, IPM Coor-

dinator at 717-933-4611 ext. 2122. Rick Triest Director of Buildings and Grounds

ASBESTOS HAZARD EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTIn accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), The Tulpehocken Area School District has

conducted inspections of all the School District buildings for the presence of Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM). An asbestos management plan for each building was developed detailing the location and condition of all ACBM along with the short-term actions to be taken to protect building occupants. These management plans are available for review by any interested person in either the District Administration Office or at the individual School during normal working hours.

AHERA regulations require a re-inspection every three years by an accredited building inspector. This triennial inspection was conducted during 2015.

the Berks County League-tying Wyomissing for fourth place. The Trojans lost five 1-run games and were “in” every game but two. Highlights of the year included an 8-7 nailbiter over then second place Brandywine and an 8-3 crush-ing of rival Annville-Cleona on senior night at Wenger Field.

MY SCHOOL COLOR RUNMy School Color Run was held on June 3, 2017 at the Tulpehocken JSHS campus to raise money for the Tulpe-

hocken Education Foundation. The fun run drew 130 registered runners/walkers from the community. Many stu-dents and families participated in the event. Volunteers helped to throw and spray color onto the participants. After the run, the action moved to the DJ staging area where lots of color was tossed to the participants and several explo-sions of color filled the air which doused everyone with more color.

The Foundation awards grants to teachers each year to provide opportunities to expand educational experiences for our students. The Foundation’s goal is to enrich and enhance programs directly being offered to students at all levels.

The event raised approximately $9,000 for the Tulpehocken Education Foundation. Many thanks to our sponsors and supporters for the Color Run.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALLast fall, our Technology Committee developed a mission statement that will guide our staff in providing our students with the

latest skill set necessary to be successful once they leave the high school. Within the technology mission statement, the committee felt it was necessary “to use technology to enhance our curriculum, to build communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills that enable students to be globally aware, competitive, and adaptable in their personal and professional life.”

To put this mission statement into practice, the district will extend a district initiative to the high school with the deployment of laptops for grades 9-12. This fall all students at the Jr-Sr High School will be issued a laptop for the start of the 2017 school year. This opportunity will give our students and staff a key instructional resource.

As part of this program, we will begin integrating the Google Classroom platform for staff to collaborate with students beyond the classroom, as well as communicate with families. Google Classroom is a great tool that allows students and staff to post as-signments, communicate and receive feedback on assignments, as well as connect with fellow classmates. Its seamless integration into the GoogleApps for Education make it a perfect option for our classrooms.

We have finalized a technology handbook and it is now published on our district web site. Inside the handbook, you will find our educational philosophy for the program, a frequently asked questions section, procedures, and expectations.

An insurance option will be offered as part of the program. This option was piloted this past spring with our 8th graders and will be offered this fall to the high school students. The cost for the insurance will be $20/year with adjustments for free and reduced status and will cover any accidental damages that may occur during the school year.

We will be hosting two parent informational nights on August 16 and 22 at 7:00pm. We encourage you to attend one of these informational nights as we will review program details, expectations, and caring for the laptop. There will be a time for any ques-tions that you might have in regards to the program.

As always, my door is open for anyone, anytime. Andy Netznik, JSHS Principal
