SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNERDear Resident:

The 2011-2012 school year is coming to an end. It seems as though each year is faster than the year before, thus the quote, “time flies”. Every year we are faced with new challenges and decisions to make. I am proud to say the Board of Directors, staff, and administration always rises to the occasion to accept the challenges and find a way to solve the issues that face us.

For the past three years we have balanced the needs of all the stakeholders of the district. In a way, we are blessed to be in the position that we are in at Tulpehocken. Taxpayers have had only one tax increase since my arrival, and we have maintained all programs for our students. Unfortunately, the same is not true for some of our neighboring districts.

This year created a new dilemma with the budget. I am proud to say, that once again, there is no affect on the available programs for our students in the classroom, as well as outside the classroom. I am very proud of my entire administration team and staff for thinking outside of the box to accomplish this task.

Since the beginning of the school year we have worked diligently to balance the budget for the 2012-2013 school year. At the time of writing this address, we anticipate a slight tax increase to you, the taxpayer. We will continue working toward this goal until the final budget is approved in June.

During my many forums and meetings with parents, many of you have indicated that a slight tax increase is understandable. I do realize this is not acceptable to all. However; I would caution that we cannot continue to have no tax increases. It will eventually catch up to us, and a more substantial increase would then be necessary.

We continue to look at all aspects of the budget. We have taken measures to reduce staff, eliminate non-instructional positions, combine jobs through attrition of staff, and make some positions part time to eliminate benefits. Again, I remind you nothing has affected our students.

Our Board of School Directors has made the difficult decision to accept a LERTA for the prime piece of real estate along 501 and interstate 78. This decision has the potential of helping our district in years to come. In the meantime, we will continue to be frugal in our attempts with the budget, and I am always available

to meet with you. Thank you for supporting our school. Without your help we would not be able to do all the wonderful things we do for our students.

Sincerely,Edward Albert, Ed.D.

opportunity to participate in a weekly “Book Swap.” Students were asked to bring books to school that they no longer wanted and then get other ones to take home. Many books have been donated to “Book Swap” and it has been a successful way to get books into the hands of young readers.

Tulpehocken junior high STudenTS win SpeciAl honorS in The STATewide Alcohol AwAreneSS poSTer conTeST

The Tulpehocken Junior High students all took part in a statewide Alcohol Awareness Poster contest connected with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The students watched a DVD on Alcohol Awareness and brainstormed to make a list with at least 10 activities that a person could do and have fun without the use of alcohol along with another list of what goals they have for their lives in the future. The contest guidelines were very specific in that the students had to portray to their peers a positive concept of fun or what life will be like achieving their goals without alcohol.

The winners of Tulpehocken’s contest were Tim Groff – 1st place (center),

Kayla Thomas – 2nd place (left), and Samantha Huntington – 3rd prize (right).

Marissa Loeb was a top 7 winner receiving a savings bond and whose poster will be reproduced and sent throughout the state. We had two “special recogni-tion” winners: Tim Groff and Kayla Paulson. All will be going to the State Capitol Rotunda to be recognized by the state on April 25th. Their posters will all be on display at the Rotunda from April 23rd through April 27th 2012. One other note of importance, we are the only school from Berks County to be recognized and have representation!!

Please congratulate these young people for their fine achievement. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful students in our district!

A big THANK YOU to Debbie Miller, Lynne Higgins, and Mike Leister for judging the poster contest at Tulpe-hocken.

ing an all day stay-in-a-box event at the high school to raise money and collect donations for the homeless. This re-places the sleep-in-a-box event that has occurred in the past. Flyers will be sent to the elementary schools and placed throughout the community detailing what types of donations will be collected.

nATionAl honor SocieTYThe NHS members of Tulpehocken High School collected donations for Cradles to

Crayons during the month of February. The picture shows just a fraction of the dona-tions collected. This idea was spear headed by NHS member, Marissa Berry. Flyers were sent to both elementary schools and an email went out to the Junior and Senior High School. NHS would like to thank the Tulpehocken community for their gener-ous support. Donations will help needy children ages birth to 12 years old. Dona-tions included gently used clothing, games, toys and various baby items. Cradles to Crayons will make sure these donations reach needy families.

reAder’S win 2012During the week of January 16, students at Bethel Elementary School participated in “Readers WIN!” Week. This

week is a fun way to promote reading and support the Literacy Council of Reading-Berks. The students needed to pledge to read a certain number of books or magazines during the week and get their relatives and friends to sponsor them. This year Bethel Elementary students raised $2993.24 to fight illiteracy!

Bethel Elementary was the school with the highest average of funds raised per student in the county for the second year in a row. They received a victory assembly with the Reading Phillies, a trophy, and a “traveling plaque,” which will stay on display at the school until the next “Reader’s WIN!” Week winner is announced. Thank you to the com-munity for your support and congratulations students!

Tulpehocken Senior high blood drive A SucceSSMany thanks to all who helped and supported the Tulpehocken Blood Drives

again this past school year. We are always amazed and grateful to our stu-dents, staff, administration and community for your generosity and caring! Where else can one go to get such overwhelming support?

Please congratulate our blood drive committee: Dylan Shipe, Katie George, Cody Hunsicker, and Selene Bazan for their effort in pulling together to make this drive a success! These young women have also become certified to helpin the actual process with future blood drives in the area. What dedication! Pictured to the right are Dylan Shipe and Katie George who were the driving force behind the blood drive this year.

Here are the results of this school year’s drive: The fall drive brought in 93 units of blood which translates to 279 lives saved. The winter drive amounted to 103 units of blood which equals 309 lives saved. Our little community donated a total of 196 units of blood which means…..588 lives saved!

Congratulations Tulpehocken on a job well done!!

On Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 7:00PM in the Jr/Sr High School auditorium, the 6th grade chorus from Bethel and Penn-Bernville will be performing their annual musical. This year’s show is entitled “Cinderella” and tells the story of the girl who was the servant to her family.

beThel STudenTS geT puMped For The pSSAsOn Monday March 12th, the students at Bethel Elementary School participated in their 3rd annual PSSA pep rally!

Students in grades K-2 cheered on their peers in grades 3-6 as they prepared to take the state assessments the following day. This year’s pep rally included a routine from some staff “cheerleaders”, speeches by Dr. Albert & Mrs. Jenkins, the 6th grade class leading the whole school in the singing of our “PSSA song” to the tune of “YMCA”, and our special surprise, two members of the Reading Royals hockey team! The players talked about how hard work pays off when you are trying to reach your goals. Students and staff were very excited to have our special guests this year at the pep rally! The annual pep rally was a big success thanks to the hard work from the teachers on the PSSA committee and all those involved in the testing process.

We are very proud of all the hard work the students have exhibited all year long in preparation for this very impor-tant assessment.

beThel’S 5Th grAde prepAreS For pSSAsAll year fifth grade has been preparing for their state assessments, by drilling math facts, PSSA prep practice,

anchor groups, and much more. The weeks of the PSSAs are different, though! A different kind of preparation was instituted to help alert multiple intelligences and to mix up the long hours of testing. Prior to testing, students par-ticipated in kinesthetic and artistic activities that required multi step directions. Bethel’s fifth graders participated in yoga, Zumba, circuit training and line dancing led by their fifth grade teachers. After delving into their kinesthetic side, students also had the opportunity to get creative. One creative outlet was the design, creation, explanation, and distance competition of paper airplanes. Another way that students de-stressed before the assessment was by creating a bouquet of flowers using straws, traced hands, pipe cleaners, and paper. Our students really got their blood pumping and minds thinking before tackling the PSSAs!

TPMA finished the school year with a wonderful performance of Fiddler on the Roof. We congratulate the fol-lowing Seniors in the cast, crew and pit: Ben Kulp, Megan Jordan, Bethany Wentling, Becca Klopp, Marissa Berry, Kirstin Luckenbill, Lauren Good, Madeline Berger, Christina Campo, Nathaniel Hebbert, Morgen Weiant, and Megan Ebling. A big thank you to Kim Murphy, Rhoda Wentling, Patty Kulp, Denise Klopp, Alan Bashore, Matt Shirk, Ollie Blatt, and their numerous volunteers for the wonderful costumes, meals, props, sets, sound and pit. Once again thank you Trudi Bux and Irving Gonzalez for helping our kids shine.

We also had our yearly Pops Concert and spring concerts which showcased the talented young people in our dis-trict.

We continued our fundraising with a new Applebee’s Flapjack breakfast which was very successful. Students sold tickets which earned them money for their individual accounts to be used for the tentative show choir trip next year and a marching band trip in 2014. Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances the planned marching band trip to Universal Studios in April had to be cancelled. Instead the band went to New York, saw the Broadway show Wicked, and toured the Metropolitan Museum.

Finally, we wish our senior high and junior high show choirs good luck during their adjudications in Hershey in May and best wishes to the Class of 2012.

Tulpehocken FFA breAkFAST By: Ashley Daub

National FFA week was held in February from the 19th to the 25th. This is held to celebrate not only the FFA orga-nization, but also the history of the FFA and student achievements. The Tulpehocken FFA celebrated the week by holding a spirit week which included Ag career day, flannel day, truck and tractor day, and blue and gold day. The Tulpehocken FFA also held their annual breakfast in honor of FFA week and as well as a thank you to the sponsors and supporters of our chapter.

Our breakfast served approximately 150 people from 7 A.M. – 10 A.M. on February 24th. Members of the FFA cooked and served our honored guests. Members and officers made Canadian bacon, bacon, pork roll, sausage, sea-soned potatoes, regular potatoes, pancakes, scrambled eggs, and served doughnuts. Servers escorted guests to tables and served delicious breakfasts. Breakfast meats were donated by Hatfield Meats. Eggs were donated by Hoffman Eggs; drinks were donated by Clover Farms. The doughnuts served at the breakfast were donated by Dutch Maid Bakery. We would like to thank all sponsors and supporters. If our chapter did not have the generous sponsors that we do, the task of hosting this breakfast would be a greater challenge.

high School girlS’ Soccer TeAMThis year the Tulpy high school girl’s soccer team is buzzing with anticipation and excitement. The girls are anx-

ious to get back on the field after last year’s first round district loss and are setting their sights on a deep district and state tournament run. Come out this season and cheer on our 9 returning seniors, Brittany Graffius, Desiree Hain, Ka-cyi Johns, Rachel Keener, Kelly Martin, Liz Palmer, Amber Schaeffer, Shayna Schaeffer, and Kaylee Zellers as they look to win back to back division 3 championships and extend their consecutive district playoff appearance streak to ten. The teams’ exciting style of play should provide many interesting games for the fans to watch so please come out and watch the team in our new and beautiful stadium. We are sure to make it a memorable one as usual.

Coach Paul Zerbe

girlS’ SoFTbAllThe Trojans are led by Coach John Gilmer and Asst. Coach Amanda Minnich. The girls look to be competitive in

a tough division that features two of the County’s best pitchers. Seniors Ashley Rank, Kelsey Boltz , Marissa Berry, Katelyn Wertz and Maddie Berger hope to lead the young team back to the playoff scene. The 2012 team should offer a fairly strong defensive team with good pitching. To achieve their goal of making playoffs, the team will have to put runs on the board. The athletes must elevate their game and play consistently. If mental mistakes are few and they play as a team, the girls should have a successful season. Best of luck ladies!

Coach John Gilmer

vArSiTY bASebAll TeAMThe 2012 Varsity Baseball Team looks to improve on last year’s 7-12 4th place Division III finish. Led by senior

co-captains catcher Ross Baver and second baseman Jesse Miller the Trojans return six starters and hope to improve. This year’s edition of the Trojan Baseballers will be young but hopefully very competitive. Baver, Miller, and out-fielder Sebastian Rodriguez are the only seniors on the squad which also feature veterans junior shortstop Derek Kissling, junior first baseman Clint Keeney and sophomore pitchers Eric Hartranft and Aaron Schneck. Returning district 3 champion Oley Valley again figures to be the team to beat in Division III, while Brandywine and Hamburg should also be improved and could give Oley a run for their money. Hustle, team spirit, and a potent offense appear to be the squad’s strengths and the Trojans will probably go as far as their young pitching staff will take them.

Coach David Voigt

TenniS TeAM SeT To love SeASonThis year’s boys’ tennis team is looking to make some noise around the league in a sport that has had trouble gain-

ing traction in our district. Led by seniors Jack Webber and Matt Bohn, the team also has a strong contingent of underclassmen that give it the depth to compete against some of the more established programs in the county. Juniors Jethro Holzman, Chase Guenther, Derek Sattazahn and sophomores James Rissmiller, Jonathan Pierson, and Shane Bowman have shown remarkable improvement. The team is off to a 2-0 start, highlighted by a convincing 5-2 vic-tory over Pottsville, a team that was a county-playoff qualifier last year. Be sure to come out and see a match at the high school tennis stadium, one of the finest facilities in Berks.

Coach David Fake

junior high TrAck TeAMThis year’s JH Track team is full of raw talent. The team is working hard to compete in all the events. Coach Joel

We both have set high expectations, both indi-vidually and as a team which consists of: Katie Becker, Samuel Boyer, Annamarie Burns, Jacob Hare, Allen Johnson, Mason Klopp, Jonathan Lafollette, James Lafollette, Marissa Loeb, Sarah Lore, Dylan Miller, Alexandra Ricketts, Andrew Risser, Christopher Rohrbach, Tanner Schlater, Isabelle Stull, Kirsten Wenger, Danny Witmer, and Michael Witmer. The team is still ecstatic about the new stadium and cannot wait to show off their talents. GO TULPY!

Message from the Principal Wow! It’s hard to believe that winter is over and spring has arrived! Even though we had some cold days, it really seemed

as though winter was non-existent. However, there was still plenty of activity at the JSHS. We had another successful winter athletic season, the musical performance of Fiddler on the Roof was a success, our students in grades 7, 8, and 11 completed this year’s installment of the PSSA exams, and we started the final marking period of classes.

As always happens this time of year, students and teachers are preparing for end-of-the-year activities and final exams. There are a number of events that I would like to highlight as we prepare to complete another successful year:

May 11 FFA Banquet May 11 NHS Sleep in a Box May 18 Penn-Bernville 6th grade JH Orientation May 24 Scholastic Achievement Banquet May 20 High School Spring Concert and Art Show May 21 Junior High School Spring Concert and Art Show May 23 Bethel 6th grade JH Orientation May 24 First day of Final Exams May 25 12:45 Early Dismissal May 26 Prom- Lantern Lodge, Myerstown May 28 No School- Memorial Day May 29 Second day of Final Exams May 30 Third day of Final Exams May 31 Last day of Final Exams June 3 Baccalaureate- St. Thomas Church June 5 Last Student Day and Junior High School Awards Assembly Commencement- Athletic Facility June 6 Commencement (Rain Date)- Athletic Facility

As always, even though the academic year is winding down, I would encourage all students to continue focusing on their studies. Summer is quickly approaching; however, the focus on academics remains. Students, keep working on your studies and keep that focus through the last day of school. Parents and guardians, I ask that you continue encouraging your student(s) to maintain the academic direction through the final assignments, test, quizzes, and exams.

To our graduating seniors, congratulations on a job well done! On behalf of the faculty and staff at the high school, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. For students who will be returning to us in the fall, use the summer time to refresh. I wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer. See you on Monday, August 27!
