lives, the reason of our being, and the reason for our faith.

Yes, it goes back to the opening of doors of a simple seminary, where Holy mass with nearby homeowners were held in their refectory. It reached to the point wherein “mono bloc” chairs had to be put in the corridor between the seminary’s refectory and the adoration chapel to accommodate a bigger number of mass goers. In 2000, the mass goers slowly turned into a community, and we became known as the Quasi-parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with Fr. Ric Eguia as the parish priest. The seminary’s refectory, chapel, and library, became what our current chapel looks like today. In 2003, we were upgraded from a quasi-parish to a parish and we were blessed with parish priests Fr. Joel Victorino, and then subsequently, our current parish priest Fr. Sandy Enhaynes.

The birth of the community was in the hearts of the young. The music and youth ministries began way before we were aware that we were starting something bigger than we had foreseen. Series of PREX (Parish Renewal Experience) and BBS (Basic Bible Study) seminars were initiated short after. At present, we have (Worship & Liturgy,Evangelization & Lay Formation,Social & Human Development,Temporalities, Vocation,Youth, Family Life Apostolate and Media

Ministry ) ministries, 12 sub communities, and we continue to grow.

“In the midst of the many hardships that we all have gone through, You made us feel that you were there all along, seeing us through till that momentous event,” Fr. Sandy thought to himself when the cross was being raised. Fr. Joel on the other hand shared, “I really felt quite emotional having to see that tall cross being hoisted on top of the church roof. There’s still a long way to go, but with the cross on top of the unfinished structure gave me hope that even with our limitations, we are assured of God’s unconditional presence.”

In these twelve years, I have been a fortunate witness to such transformation. I have grown up with it in all its ebb and flow of time. The simple seminary turned into a home for us; whose initial purpose of making us belong to God and His church is and continues to be strengthened. Before my eyes unfolded a miracle; a miracle that turned strangers

The assistance for the Sendong victims is just overwhelming! As of January 7, 2012, our parish received P130,196.75 in cash/check donations. Aside from that, the parish also received 134 boxes of food and clothes and 11 sacks of rice. Donations are still welcome as long as people have something to give. All donations will be for-warded to the Social Human Development minis-try of the diocese of Iligan. The help we provide is relatively small compared to how much the Sendong victims really need but it will surely go a long way for them.

Q- What is this New Translation of the Roman Missal soon to be used by the Catholic Church? Why do Catholics have to know it and adopt it?A-The Roman Missal is the book of prayers, rites and instructions followed by Catholic Priests and laity in celebrating Holy Mass.

For our appreciation of its use and importance, here is a brief survey of its history:

In Jerusalem in the early days of Christianity, believers gathered together to celebrate the Lord’s Supper out of love for and in obedience to Jesus’ Command: “Do this in memory of me.”

Lk 22:19. Simple and not so formal, it included a reading of Scripture, instruction on the life and teachings of Jesus, and the sharing of his Body and Blood by the baptized.

The church grew, andalthough the basic elements of the mass were carefully observed by all, the prayers, readings and ways of celebrating differed from place to place.

Slowly, more formal prayers were composed and written down, and missals soon appeared and developed. The faithful in the different communities of the same diocese could now use the same prayers, read the same passages and observe the rites in the same way. Thus, standardization and uniformity began to set in at the regional level.

Then in the 16th century, the

Catholic Church, responding to the challenges of the Protestant Reformation, took decisive steps to counter

its divisive effects.

Among

these are the clarification and redefinition of doctrines and the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist. To further eliminate confusion, Pope Pius V issued in 1570 a single missal for the entire Catholic world: THE ONE AUTHORIZED HOLY MASS BOOK IN LATIN: THE ROMAN MISSAL. One voice, one worship, the same prayers and the same truths proclaimed helped to strengthen faith and foster unity among all Catholic churches: big, small, north, south, east, and west of

the globe, and the use of only latin in

all the masses further ensured solidarity in

Catholicdom.

In 1969, the Roman Missal was revised as a result of the refreshing winds of change that enlivened Vatican II. Pope Paul VI introduced it as one of the most radical changes of the time: the translation of the Roman Missal into the vernacular, the language of people. Reciting prayers and singing hymns in their native tongues, they could partake of the Holy Eucharist more

St. ValentineWe are always ahead of

the stores in reminding all about Valentine’s Day.

A second revision was done in 1975, and its translation is what Catholics have been using since.

Finally, in celebration of the Great Jubilee in 2000, Pope John Paul II sought a 3rd revision to fine-tune the Roman Missal for the new millennium. The work is done, and its New English Translation will be in effect for us this year come advent: December 2, 2012.

Q- But why do Catholics have to adopt the new Missal

when they have been accustomed to and comfortable with the present translation? A-We do so in obedience to the directive Mother Church and to keep the unity we have built over centuries. Quite important, too, is the hope that changes in the New Translation will help us understand better and love the prayers and rites even more.

We shall then be moved to participate more consciously and wholeheartedly in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of our Christian Catholic life.

Q- We have a saying: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Why make changes in the words? Do words matter? Isn’t the heart the heart of the matter, especially with prayer?A- This is a very good question, and the answer will be the topic of our Part II article which will be featured in the next issue of Tugon. Do watch out for it, ok?

Man has come up with a lot of cons, but what real ly is there to hate about technology? In the f irst p lace, isn ’t i t proof of mankind’s genius?

Wel l , aside from the expense that comes with being “tech savvy” , we pay a much bigger price in the form of putt ing our personal relat ionships at stake. Sure, technology connects us to people we cannot be with physical ly , but i t a lso has a tendency to d isconnect us from those near us — those who are actual ly with us.

Yes, i t g ives us the sense of security in terms of being “reachable” and enabl ing us to do what we need (and want) to anyt ime, but we tend to take for granted our actual real i ty a lso because of i t .

How many t imes do we look at our phones whi le d in ing with our fami-l ies? During those intervals , how much bonding, laughter and emotions do we miss when instead of speak-ing to them, we are preoccupied with text ing, updat ing our status, or tweet ing?

Other than rat ional i ty , what d ist in-guishes us from other species is our abi l i ty to feel and to express how we feel through ways one cannot count . I f that is so, let us be who we are; humans and not s laves to technol-

Do not wait for something unfortunate to hap-pen to make you real ize that before anything else, you should have saved what is truly important and personal to you. There’s nothing wrong with technology to grat i fy our needs, but in order to remain humans i t is im-portant to str ike a balance between the t ime we spend being experts in technology and the t ime we use to keep our personal rela-t ionships, — not facebook statuses, in check.

narinig, nasaksihan at naunawaan. Sadyang masustansya at malaman ang naging katesismo sa bawat araw sa temang “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith”.

Paano kaya yun? Nakasanayan nating mabuhay

See you KADA!

After implementing the City Ordinance No. 2009 – 370 which prohibits the use of plastic bags and Styrofoam in our beloved city, most business establishments have migrated to using paper bags instead of plastic as packaging. However, just like the plastic bag it will become garbage after all, since it offers instant decluttering gratification, but perhaps checking out the following recycled brown paper bag ideas will make you realize what potential you have lurking beneath the sink.

Remember that for every ton of paper that is recycled, 17 trees live. Be sure to do your par t to help save landfill space and conserve natural resources. We have only one world that our chil-dren will inherit. Let us make sure that we hand it over alive and breathing still.

Use it as oil absorbent paper for greasy plates or utensils. Reduce the need for more detergent by wiping off the grease before washing.Use it as good mirror cleaner which will bring a spotless result.Use it as mulch to retard the growth of weeds.Use it as great lining for animal cages. And the best way to maximize it is to reuse it 3 or more times on groceries.

eventually, from friends to family.

It began with the Immaculate Heart of Mary bringing us closer to

the foot of the cross. And for our parish, it continues on with her, still in adoration at the foot of His cross.
