Degree of freedom (DOF) adalah derajat kebebasan suatu titik nodal untuk mengalami deformasi yang dapat berupa translasi (perpindahan) maupun rotasi terhadap tiga sumbu ruang.

Jadi untuk suatu nodal dapat terjadi 6 bentuk deformasi jika berada pada suatu kondisi bebas yakni 3 translasi (x, y, z) dan 3 rotasi (x, y, z). Suatu nodal tidak bebas berdeformasi (tertahan) karena diberi restraint atau disebut juga sebagai tumpuan.
