Monday’s poll theatrics proved yet againthat an election is one big festival for In-dians, and the results, a carnival. The city
buzzed with number-crunchers counting and cal-culating, and thousands of party workers throngedthe lanes near the main counting centres.
Right from the JSS Mahavidya Pitha, HSR Lay-out, where counting for Bommanahalli and Ban-galore South constituencies was being held, to theB R Ambedkar Stadium at Agrahara Dasarahalli, the mood was celebratory.
Across constituencies, people thronged by theirhundreds and shouted slogans to cheer on the vic-torious candidates. Bursting of crackers was asure-fire signal of victory.
While Bommanahalli constituency saw BJPscoring a full eight on eight, the Congress had aslight edge in Bangalore South, scoring four oneight, with BJP and JD(S) coming in second andthird respectively.
A crowd of over 3,000 not only filled the lanes, but also entered the BDA complex and occupiedprime locations from where they could rejoice. Thepolice had a tough time keeping them from enter-ing the JSS College building.
The crowd was a mix of the three major par-ties, waiting impatiently on the lanes till some-body came out to indicate which party had won.And a deafening roar would ensue — whistling, sloganeering, throwing colours, the supportersdanced to the tunes of drummers, hired for thisspecial occasion, kicking up heat and dust underthe scorching sun.
GOVINDARAJANAGAR/VIJAYANAGARThere was a virtual sea of people at Govindarajanagarand Vijayanagar counting centres — supporters ofparty candidates had gathered early in the morningeven before counting started. They held flags andshouted slogans in favour of their candidates.
As the results trickled out towards noon, it be-came clear that the BJP had romped home, wipingout the other contenders by bagging 8 out of 9 wards. There were animated conversations of who beatwho, and by what margin. People were busy on cell-phones, calling to assure every few minutes, andshouting excitedly when the lead was strong.
Govindarajangar being the home ground of V So-manna — a Congressman who is now in the BJP —the results gave him a shot in the arm, as he had lostthe MLA by-elections to Priya Krishna of the Con-gress. Mohan Kumar won the main Govindarajana-gar ward. The mood at Vijayanagar counting cen-tre was as frenzied — hundreds of people had gath-ered at the Vidyaranyapura counting centre, andas it neared noon, it became clear that like Govin-darajanagar, the BJP had swamped Vijayanagarconstituency too, bagging 6 of 8 wards.
MALLESWARAMCelebrations, disappointments and not many sur-prises: this was the mood in the two counting cen-tres for seven wards under Malleswaram assem-bly constituency.
With the segment coming under a BJP MLA,there was a clear lead for party candidates rightfrom the start. By noon, BJP had won five of thesix wards. The Kabaddi Ground building and ad-jacent BBMP Boys & Girls’ High School, along N Subbaiah Road, were the two main action pointsfor the entire Malleswaram constituency.
Counting began at 8 am, starting with AramaneNagar. The first results were announced even be-fore 9 am. But the crowds, which had gathered at7.30 am, only grew by the hour. There were nocrackers, just resonant ‘Jai Jai’s.
SHANTHINAGAR/SHIVAJINAGAR The scene outside Maharani Women’s College waspulsating, with hundreds of party workers sway-ing the BJP flag. Party workers had started cele-brations early in the day, with slogans of ‘BharatMata ki Jai’. However, the Congress won three ofthe seven wards in Shanthinagar assembly con-stituency. At Ramanarayana Challaram College,
Shivajinagar constituency, the Congress again tookaway four wards out of seven. Nothing new forMuslim-dominated Shivajinagar constituency.
However, BJP candidate for VasanthnagarJagdish Katta made a clean sweep with a lead of
3,831 votes. The air outside RC College was filledwith smoke and the loud noise of crackers, as soonas Katta made an appearance. And his sound byte? That he would try his best to make Bangalore thenext Singapore!
