Severity Clause

A student whose behavior disrupts others from learning despite warnings and redirection will be sent to my buddy teacher’s classroom with work to do AND receive 20 negative hole punches. Should that student not cooperate with my buddy teacher, they will be sent to the TAC team and given a 5 point D504 demerit

ENTRY 7- Problem 5-23 “PICK A CARD, ANY CARD”

• What is the probability of picking the following cards from the deck? Write your response as a fraction, as a decimal, and as a percent.

A. P(black)? B. P(club)? C. If you drew a card from the deck and then replaced it, and if you

repeated this 100 times, about how many times would you expect to draw a face card (king, queen, or jack)? Explain your reasoning.

ENTRY 8 – WORD WALL

When finding the probability that something will not happen, you are finding the probability of the complement. Everything in the sample space that is not in the event is in the complement.

ENTRY 9 : Problem 5-24• Sometimes it is easier to figure out the probability that something will

not happen than the probability that it will happen. When finding the probability that something will not happen, you are finding the probability of the complement. Everything in the sample space that is not in the event is in the complement.

A. What is the probability you do not get a club, written P(not club)? B. What is P(not face card)?

C. What would happen to the probability of getting an ace on a second draw if you draw an ace on the first draw and do not return it to

the deck? Justify your answer.

ENTRY 10: Problem 5-25 “Rob and Travis”

What makes a game fair?

Page 24: Tuesday, 12 January 3016. Quiet WorkStand Deliver Open Discussion Team Work THE CURRENT CLASSROOM MODE

Problem 5-25 continue…Rob decided to play a card game with his friend, Travis. He told Travis that if he picked a black card with a value of nine or greater, Travis would win. (Jacks, queens, and kings are considered to be greater than nine.) If Rob picked a red card with a value of less than nine, Rob would win. (Aces are considered to have the value of one in this case.)

C. According to the definition in the introduction to this lesson, is this a fair game? Why or why not?

Entry 11/12: Closure “Probability for ‘Either/Or’ Events.”

Create an example and explain how you would calculate the probability when two different outcomes are favorable (such as the example of the raffle ticket and cash).  Then, record any questions you have about probability.  Your questions might relate to things that you have already worked on or may be about situations you have not yet studied.

problems from your homework

Problem 5-26 continue…• If you buy a scratch-off ticket, is it more likely that you will win a free

raffle ticket or a cash prize? Explain your answer.

• What is the probability that you will win something (either a free raffle entry or a cash prize)?

• What is the probability that you will win nothing at all? To justify your thinking, write an expression to find the complement of winning something.

So far you have calculated probabilities of different events and analyzed a game to see if it was fair.  Along the way, you also found the probability of either one or another event taking place (such as winning either a raffle entry or a cash prize in part (b) of problem 5-26).

Entry 17 – Lesson Objective• We will use a computer simulation to find experimental probabilities

of complex compound probabilities

• HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?• Quiz Friday with at least one of the problems from today on it EXACTLY AS IS • HW tonight with 3 problems, at least 1 of which will also be on Friday’s quiz• Chapter test where I will have to simplify algebraic expressions

Entry 18 - Word Wall•When the mathematics becomes too complicated to figure out the theoretical probability of certain events, statisticians often use computer simulations instead.

Entry 19 – Problem 5-34 RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR

• Imagine a random number generator that produces numbers from 1 to 20. In each game below, if the stated outcome happens, Player X wins. If it does not, then Player Y wins.

•Game 1: A prime number = Player X wins•Game 2: An even number = Player X wins•Game 3: A number not divisible by three =

Player X wins

Page 48: Tuesday, 12 January 3016. Quiet WorkStand Deliver Open Discussion Team Work THE CURRENT CLASSROOM MODE

Problem 5-34 continue…A. In each case, what is the theoretical probability that Player X wins? That Player Y wins? Decide whether each game above is fair.

B. In which of the three games is Player X most likely to win? Why?

C. In Game 1, the prime number game, if you play 40 times, how many times would you expect Player X to win? What if you played 50 times?
