Punctuality, Absence and Illness

Punctuality

All students must arrive in school, in time for registration at 8:50am. Any student who arrives after 8:50am will be marked as ‘late’ and will be placed in detention at break time. The lateness will be recorded in the student’s planner. Failure to attend detention, or persistent lateness will result in the student being placed in detention by the College Leader, at which point parents/carers will be contacted to arrange to attend an ‘attendance meeting’ in which targets for attendance will be set.

Absence and Illness

If your son/daughter is not attending school due to illness, please contact Student Services on the appropriate number listed on Page 3. If we have received no communication from the parents’/carers’ by 9.30am, then contact will be made. For each day your son/daughter is off school, you must contact us to inform us, as we must have contact for each 24 hour period.

If your child becomes ill during the school day, they should report to the Student Services desk where a first aid trained member of staff will assess them. They will then take the appropriate steps to ensure the wellness and safety of your child. If they are assessed and the first aider deems it necessary that they are too ill to remain at school for the day, they will contact you to advise, and your son/daughter will await collection in our medical room.

Please notify our Attendance Officer (01527 830730) of any infectious or contagious illness occurring in the household of any student. In such cases, a student should not attend the Academy until a medical certificate has been submitted indicating that he/she may do so with safety to other students.

Leave of Absence

If a student requires a leave of absence for any reason, a letter must be brought in from home. The letter should be given to Student Services, who will issue a ‘leave of absence permission slip’. The leave of absence should be obtained before the day it is needed, except in an emergency.

Before leaving the school premises, the student should report to the Student Services desk to sign out. They should then be collected by parents/carers from the Main Reception unless a letter, giving specific permission to leave the Academy alone, is received. This will then be indicated on the ‘leave of absence permission slip’. On returning to the Academy the student should immediately sign in at Student Services and hand the slip back in.

Leave of Absence for family holidays

As an Academy we recognise the importance of family time and holidays together. However, we have a strong belief that attendance and academic success go hand in hand, so would urge that Academy term dates are adhered to, in accordance with the guidelines.

In accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2013 amendment of the 2006 Regulations, Tudor Grange Academies Trust will be complying with the amendment in that the Principal will not be authorising a leave of absence unless there are “exceptional circumstances”.

The Academy has a responsibility to safeguard every child on roll at the Academy and therefore a Leave of Absence Form must be completed in any circumstances, three weeks before the planned leave and submitted to the Principal for the Principal’s decision.

A letter confirming that the Leave of Absence Form has been received and whether the absence/holiday has been either authorised or unauthorised will be sent to the parents/carers within seven days of receipt of the Leave of Absence request.

Page 13: Tudor Grange Academy Redditch Handbook

Page | 13

If the Academy has referred the student/family to the Local Authority for any form of legal action the absence/holiday will not be authorised even if it falls into an exceptional circumstances category.

The parent/carer should be made aware that if they do take a holiday in term time and it does not fall into the category of ‘exceptional circumstances’ it will lead to the student being automatically marked as having unauthorised absence. The Academy will then consider whether to refer the matter to the Local Authority to take appropriate legal action.

Consent to administer medicines

Academy staff are unable to administer medication to students. However, if it is absolutely necessary that your child receives medication during the school day, the Named First Aider will be able to do this, but only on completion of a ‘Consent to Administer Medicines’ form. All medicines must be in their original packaging and must have the student’s name and prescribed dosage on it. Please contact Academy Reception for more details.

In Confidence

If there are circumstances at home which may affect your child’s work or behaviour at the Academy (eg illness in the family), please notify the Academy. Such information will be treated with discretion, though, if you wish, teaching staff will be informed in general terms that there is a problem.

Travelling to and from the Academy

We want all students to arrive at the Academy safely and on time. Please read through this information and then discuss and agree the travel arrangements with your child.

Walking

Any students walking to the Academy should use public footpaths and wherever possible should walk to the Academy with a friend. Good standards of behaviour and respect for all our neighbours’ property and privacy are expected at all times; students should be aware that whilst they are wearing the Academy uniform they are representing the Academy.

Cycling

As an Academy we would like to encourage as many students as possible to cycle. Tudor Grange Academy Redditch has an area where bikes can be locked. Your child would be expected to lock their bicycle using a suitable cable. We would like all children travelling by bicycle to wear a cycle helmet, although we cannot insist on this, we would encourage you to tell your child to wear one.

Car

In order to ensure the safety of all our students, parents/carers who bring their children to the Academy by car should not park on the approach road to the entrance of the Academy and must adhere to the one way system once on the Academy site.

Bus

School bus services provided by the Local Authority are available. Please see our website for details of numbers, routes, times and prices.

Catering

Students can either purchase food from the Academy Dining Room, Atrium Café or bring in a packed lunch. In the Dining Room and Atrium Café the Academy operates a cashless system. Please refer to Page 8 of the Home/School Agreements and Permissions Booklet for further information on this.

Homework Students are expected to use homework time to ensure they are fully prepared for in-class assessment, reviewing their work and undertaking practice to consolidate learning. Homework will consist of a mixture of focused tasks or a running programme of project based activities. Staff will often guide students as to the work they should undertake at home to augment their learning in school. The following is a guide as to how much study time your child should undertake at home: Year 9 30 – 45 minutes per day Years 10 and 11 90 minutes per day There is a separate guide for Years 12 and 13 Assessment The Academy maintains a rigorous assessment routine of half termly common assessments and annual end of year examinations for all subjects. Students are prepared for their half term common assessments by two shorter formative assessments which usually fall in weeks three and five of the half term. Marking and feedback Students make outstanding progress when they receive support at home. Please take time to review your child’s books and go through the feedback they receive from their teachers. We work hard to ensure work is marked clearly and feedback includes targets and guidance as to the next steps your child should take to ensure further success. Should you have any concerns or queries regarding marking or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
