Flu season is here, we are hoping that the worst of it is over. However, here are some helpful tips to follow as we continue to make it through flu season. We hope these tips will keep you and your family healthy and safe this school year.

OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION Tuckahoe Middle School is very pleased to be an Olweus Bullying Prevention school.

The Olweus Program (pronounced Ol-VEY-us; the E sounds like a long A) is a comprehensive, school-wide program designed and evaluated for use in elementary and middle schools. The program’s goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among school children and to improve peer relations at school. The program has been found to reduce bullying among children, improve the social climate of classrooms, and reduce related antisocial behaviors. The Olweus Program has been implemented in more than a dozen countries around the world, and in thousands of schools in the United States.

Even with a school’s best efforts, bullying can affect the safety and well-being of the entire student population. In order to stop bullying, it needs to be addressed at every level of a student’s experience. That is why the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a whole-school program aimed at preventing or reducing bullying throughout a school setting.

Backed by thirty-five years of research and successful, worldwide implementation, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a long-term, system-wide program for change involving program components at four levels:

*School-wide*Individual*Classroom*Community

Tuckahoe Middle has implemented this school-wide program. We hold class meetings every other week during H block for 45 minutes. During that time, students have located the “hot spots” around campus and discussed how bullying behavior can be prevented. They have also learned the four rules of Olweus Bullying Prevention:

1. We will not bully others.2. We will try to help students who are bullied.3. We will try to include students who are left out.4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

When a student is caught bullying, that student, as well as the target of the bully, are spoken with. Our goal is to change the behavior of the bully. Having a positive school-wide climate is the ultimate goal.

Before each class meeting, the topic of the class meeting will be posted on HCPSlink. There will also be an article regarding bullying prevention. Additionally, please check out the Olweus link on the PTA webpage, tmspta.org. If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact Terry Mullinnix at 673-3723.

Health & P.E. Thank SCAThe Health and Physical Education Department would like to thank the SCA for providing the funds to purchase the Geo Fitness program. Geo Fitness is a new and exciting form of cardiovascular and endurance training. It includes a brightly designed, textured mat, along with energetic music to motivate our students. We are eager to begin using the new equipment during instruction time as well as intramurals. It will be a rewarding asset to our department.

Thank you for your sincere generosity.

Trip To France

Join TMS in France for 10 days in July 2010!

We will be four days in Paris, visiting Notre Dame, St. Sulpice, the Louvre, the top of the Eiffel Tower, a Seine cruise, and more. Two days in the Loire valley will take us to Versailles and the Châteaux of Chambord, Amboise and Chenonceaux. Next is the region of Normandy with its Mont St. Michel, American D-Day Invasion Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, and the Cathedral of Rouen (one of Monet’s favorite subjects).

This trip highlights the many historical, cultural, and artistic influences that these locations have had on our lifestyles and values. It features an experienced tour director, a full-sized tour bus, and quality, centrally-located accommodations. Both teacher-leaders (Ms. Shelhorse and Mrs. Brooks) are experienced travelers, fluent in French and knowledgeable in the culture, art, traditions and history of France. They have chosen this itinerary for the close connections to themes presented in their students’ text.

Learning objectives:

1. Students will gain a sense of the importance of culinary traditions in France by partaking in cheese tasting and sampling traditional meals.

2. Students will gain a wider understanding of the evolution of the French Châteaux of the Loire, from the simple fortress to a graceful residence and subsequently be better able to assess Versailles and its role in the build-up to the French Revolution.

3. Students will compare and contrast the lifestyles of city-dwelling Parisians with the lifestyles of those who inhabit smaller fishing villages in France’s northwest corner.

If you are an 8th grader (or an adult) and want more information or to apply for membership in the group, contact Ms. Shelhorse or Mrs. Brooks at 673-3720.

Recycling at TMS

Don’t throw away those ink or toner cartridges. TMS recycles cartridges for both the laser and desk jet printers. Newspapers can also be recycled at

TMS. The red bin is in the back of the parking lot on the left between Taylor and Davis buildings. Let’s Go Green.

International ClubTMS International Club Organizes for the 2009-2010 Year

The TMS International Club held its first meeting of the 2009-2010 school year on September 14 and plans are currently underway for an exciting International Night celebration in March. To date, TMS students and teachers have committed to host eleven cultural booths, with many more participants and booths expected.

In addition to cultural booths, we are planning international game areas for attendees, as well as performances by various dance groups representing cultures around the world. Attendees will also be treated to international arts and crafts activities.

Plan now to join us for delicious international foods, music, dancing, arts and crafts, and of course, cultural booths presented by TMS students, staff, and friends.

If you are interested in joining the International Club or participating in our International Night celebration, please contact Ms. Patrise Sears by telephone (673-3720), or email at ([email protected]), or send a note to school. Students, you may see Ms. Sears, Ms. Flores, or Mrs. Mullins.

International Cookbooks

The members of the TMS International Club proudly announce the first phase of their 2009-2010 fundraiser, the sale of International Cookbooks. The cookbook features many of the recipes served at the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 International Night celebrations. All monies raised will be used to support the International Club in their endeavors to increase the awareness and knowledge of our school community about the many different cultures represented at Tuckahoe Middle School and to defray the costs of International Night each year.

The cost of each book is $7.00 and you may purchase one using either cash or check. Checks should be made payable to TMS. Please write “International Cookbook” on the memo portion of your check along with your student’s name. You may place an order by filling out the form be-low, detaching it, and returning it to Ms. Patrise Sears, International Club Sponsor at TMS.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Sears at TMS (673-3720) or via email at [email protected].

The TMS PTA appreciates your involvement at TMS. I am happy to report that:

• PTA membership is up this year compared to last year. • Students in our directory increased by 200 students this year. The directory

keying was done by Gail Douttiel, our Directory Chair, and was delivered to students in October.• The number of volunteers who help with hospitality (our monthly breakfast treats for TMS

staff) has increased. • There were more volunteers helping with the Scholastic Book Fair than in previous years.

It was nice to see many of you at our Ice Cream Social, held in September. In October, we had a parent information session on the Olweus Bullying program that Sharon Brager, our PTA Programs Chair, coordinated with TMS staff members Chelsea Saunders, Sandy Shaw and Terry Mullinix.

Sharon is also working with TMS regarding an upcoming program, Too Smart to Start, for TMS parents and students on Thursday, December 3 from 6:00 -7:30. This underage-drinking prevention initiative is directed at Henrico parents and teenagers, to educate them about the health risks of teen alcohol comsuption and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to underage youth. A light dinner will be provided.

The PTA Board is also pleased that we have some new programs this year that have been well received by TMS parents and faculty. Our grounds committee is led by gardener Mary Kevan Roper.

Another new focus this year is the underwriting of the cost of several assemblies. Cheryl Pacious, our Cultural Arts Chair, has worked diligently with TMS in the arrangements for these assemblies.

Several other new programs include:

• Our Welcome Desk, staffed by PTA volunteers from 8:00 – 10:05. Ginger Shover is doing a great job coordinating these volunteers in this pilot program.

• PTA volunteers are helping our ESL learners on a weekly basis by reading with them.• Our dedicated Corresponding Secretary, Nancy Askew, is sending cards to TMS faculty on

their birthday as well as delivering sympathy cards. In addition, she is giving our staff upon the birth of a baby, retirement, etc. a small gift from the PTA.

• TMS welcome packets are offered to transfer students. Susan Armentrout has thankfully taken on this task.

If you have not yet joined our PTA or made a contribution to Patriot Pride, it is not too late to do so. Please email me at [email protected] for information on membership or Patriot Pride.

Please keep abreast of other TMS PTA info by referring to our website, www.tmspta.org Our PTA volunteer Beth Stephens is kindly keeping this website up to date.

We have other great volunteers including Becky Akers, our hard working Treasurer and Carol Lovelace, our Recording Secretary. I hope if you see these volunteers on the TMS campus, you will take the time to say thank you. Our PTA meets on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m in the TMS library on the following dates: Nov. 16, Jan. 11 and Feb 8. All parents are welcome to attend.

If you would like to volunteer, please feel free to contact me at 288-3747. Thank you in advance for your participation! I hope to see you at the PTA bookstore, at our Too Smart to Start program, and at other TMS events or our Cheeburger Cheeburger Fundraiser on Wed, Nov. 25.

Seventh and eighth grade students enjoyed an energetic two-person show from the Baltimore Shakespeare Co. relating scenes from Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Nights Dream and The Taming of the Shrew to middle school life. Fun facts and history about the Elizabethan era were included to provide an exciting and interactive introduction to Shakespeare, his words, works and music.

PTA EventsBook Fair

The book fair has departed and the TMS librarians would like to thank Cindy Georgallis and Margaret Sitisen for their many hours of planning and running the book fair. Thanks to these two parents, the book fair raised more money than ever before. This could not have happened without the many parents who volunteered for early mornings and late nights. Thank you to all.

PTA Reflections Program

Thanks to all the enthusiastic and creative students who entered the PTA Reflections program this year. We received a total of nineteen thought-provoking and inspiring entries in the visual arts, literature and photography categories. The entries have been submitted to the judges. TMS Grounds Update

The PTA is especially happy that we have a new Grounds Committee, chaired by Mary Kevan Roper. Many of you may know Mary Kevan, through her grounds and garden work at Maybeury Elementary. Mary Kevan has met with our new assistant principal, Mr. Harding, who is our administrator in charge of Grounds, regarding a joint effort between TMS and our PTA to improve the TMS grounds. Azaleas, hostas and pansies were planted this fall through the combined efforts of over 25 PTA volunteers, TMS students and TMS faculty members on our fall Grounds day, Sept. 12. Rose bushes were planted by our PTA Grounds Committee in October. The grounds committee spent time watering these new plants this fall. Improving the grounds at TMS will be on ongoing joint effort between the PTA Grounds Committee and TMS. If you would like to help out the Grounds Committee, please contact Mary Kevan at 740-0527.Thank you!

Media CenterAuthor M.T. Anderson

M.T. Anderson is the Go Read author for 2009-10. Tuckahoe Middle School’s library participated in two events to support this program. On October 6, in the library, the Young Adult Librarian at Tuckahoe Public Library visited for a book talk with students who read Burger Wuss by Mr. Anderson. On October 21, students from Tuckahoe Middle traveled to Byrd Middle to meet M.T. Anderson. To qualify to attend, students read a book of their choice written by the author. Go Read is a collaboration between Henrico County schools and public libraries. Each year a different author is featured.

Next Book Chat

Once each nine weeks a Tuckahoe Public Librarian visits the library to facilitate a book chat with students who have read the book chosen for the chat. The public library loans us ten copies of the book to check out to students. This nine weeks the book chat title is Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson. This is a popular young adult series that is usually checked out by students. The book chat will take place during H block on December 3. Students who have read this book need to sign up in the library so that passes may be issued.

Spring Henrico Author Visit - Roland Smith

Any student who reads a book written by Roland Smith by March 15 is eligible to travel to Byrd Middle School to meet him on either March 30 or 31. Please encourage your student to participate. If they have one of his books, Mr. Smith will sign the book.

TMS is Preparing for the IB Middle Years Programme in 2010.

This programme, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five areas of interaction that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Students are required to study their mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology. In the final year of the programme, students also engage in a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the understandings andskills they have developed throughout the programme.

Read more on the Middle Years Programme at: http://www.ibo.org/myp/
