• In English, we use the ‘s to show possession.

(No, this is not a typo).

• Instead, use “de” in this word order:

EXAMPLE: el perro de Juan/ John’s dog

-To ask to whom something belongs, use:¿De quién es item?

EXAMPLE: ¿De quién es la chaqueta?/Whose jacket is this?

-To respond, use: The item es de person.

Possessive Adjectives

TO BE CLEAR…Possessive adjectives MUST match the noun they are describingin 1) number, and 2) gender, BUT…

it must also refer to the person that it belongs to.

EXAMPLE: my brother and I

(number: plural, gender: masculine)

have a grandma.

(number: singular, gender: feminine)

So how would we say: our grandma? nuestra abuela

TÍTULO: LA FECHA (THE DATE) Y LOS MESES (THE MONTHS)

• To ask what is today’s date?, ask:

“¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?”

• To give the date, “Today is the number of month”:

“Hoy es el numero de mes.”

EJEMPLO: Hoy es el once de junio/ Today is the 11th of June

One more thing (actually, three)…

• number of the day first, then the number of the month

EXAMPLE: 10/12 = December 10th, NOT October 12th

(Best advise: always include “de” in the date to keep the right order)

• DON’T capitalize months

• First of any month: use “el primer”, not “el uno”

EXAMPLE: 1/7 Es el primer de junio.

PRACTICAR: Say what the date is. Begin each sentence with, “Today the date is…” in Spanish.
