Celebrating Bristol’s Bicentennial Year… The Town of Bristol will be celebrating its 200th year during 2019. There is a committee working diligently to provide many exciting activities and events during the year. This is a great time to think about our TTCC History with a few fun facts from ‘History of The Bristol Community Center’ by Charles E. Greenwood.

• Our building was erected in 1889 & 90 after the old Methodist Church burned. The belfry holds a bell that weights 1,720 lbs and the building cost $11,000 to build.

• In 1946 the vision of Reverend A.B. Thompson was realized when the Federated Committee agreed to fund a recreation program in the amount of $1,500. Reverend Thompson had previously used the building for a Boy’s Club and realized the importance of recreational opportunities for all youth. Our first Director, “Wink” Tapply had been a member of this Boy’s Club and had the same vision as Reverend Thompson. Under the direction of “Wink” and with the guidance of Reverend Thompson the Bristol Community Center opened its doors in October of 1946.

• “Wink” remained the Director for ten years. During his tenure he initiated many of the programs that continue to this day. He was also a master at event planning and was responsible for beginning our Annual Santa’s Village. “Wink” knew how to rally the community and build a solid support system that included adding funding from area municipalities.

• A wonderful example of “Wink’s” vision and leadership was when it was suggest-ed that a shooting range would be a nice addition to the building. The famous ’10 Bucket Club” was established in 1948. The only requirement to join the ‘Club’ was to carry 10 buckets of dirt out of the basement each week. In two years the youth and adults had excavated a space 67’ long and 16’ wide. To this day TTCC projects are completed with help from many volunteers in our community and would not be possible without their support.

• We are currently in the process of completing our ‘gym renovation’ project that was prioritized by the TTCC Teen Council. They spearheaded fundraising efforts that raised $19,000 towards this much needed project.

That is a bit about our history and how Reverend Thompson and “Wink” Tapply made such a difference in the lives of generations of youth in our community. As Bristol enters its 200th year there are a few ‘save the date’ events worth mentioning so you can mark your calendars!

• Bicentennial Concert at Newfound Regional High School on April 10th

• Community Dance at the Historic Town Hall on June 22nd

• Community Wide Birthday Party, Proclamation & Concert on June 24th – actual birthday

• Old Time Artisans, Historical Reenactment, Parade & much more during Old Home Day weekend on August 23rd & 24th

• Weekly Trivia contest Stay tuned for updates on events and activities by following the committee at:

We are so very grateful for the amazing support we receive from all of you as donors, volunteers and cheerleaders of the TTCC.

2018 has been a great year for us and we continue to be awed by what an amazing community we live in. Our After-school program numbers have increased to an average of 60 youth each day. The Teen Council, under the wonder-ful leadership of Regina Richford, has doubled in numbers this year with 38 teens. Last year this group raised $19,000 for our gym renovation which is due to be completed by the end of February. They have implemented new programs such as Parents Night Out, offered the Haunted Basement at Halloween, coached sports teams and come to volunteer in After School. We work closely with the High School and meet weekly with students at school to plan activities and fundraisers. This group has volunteered thousands of hours to run our teen dances, volunteer at all events and make improvements to our building. They are in the process of planning the replacement of the win-dows in the front of the TTCC.

We are very proud to have been able to bring swim lessons back to the community. With the collaboration of the Town of Bristol we offer lessons at Cummings Beach for six weeks during the summer. This is so important for our kids that live in our lake community.

Our Board held a Strategic Planning Workshop this year and are looking at what we need to do to continue our suc-cess. The Board and staff have built strong collaborations in our community and we are so fortunate to have the support of our eight Newfound Towns as well as the Newfound Area School District which allows us access to the school buildings for our many programs. Another major collaboration is with our NH Marathon event. This event is sponsored by the TTCC but the profits support not only our program but the Circle and Mayhew Programs as well. We are on track to provide over $30,000 in program scholarships to our local kids this year. No child is ever denied access to a program for lack of financial means.

The Westward Bound Teen Expedition traveled to California in August and were able to visit the Redwoods, Muir Woods, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The 14 High School students receive a ½ credit for their participation in this educational trip to National Parks and other areas each year.

With the support of the Town of Bristol and our Newfound Babe Ruth League Commission we were able to install scoreboards at the Kelley Park Baseball & Softball fields. The Baseball Scoreboard was named in Memory of Ron Bucklin, a longtime Baseball Coach in our area. New steps were also installed at Wells Field through an Eagle Scout project by JW Cantwell. This year we also replaced the stairs and railings in the front of the building. The old con-crete steps in front of the TTCC began to crumble last winter and we were able to replace them with granite steps that should last for many years to come.

We are so grateful that so many choose the Tapply-Thompson Community Center as an organization to support. We promise you that your donations will make a difference to the youth and families in our Newfound Region.

Thank you for believing in us. We are grateful for our Newfound Community!
