We are very pleased to announce that two of our Juniors, Nicholas Nyberg and Olivia Kisgen, have achieved National Merit Scholar “Commended” status! According to the College Board, National Merit Scholarship Commended status is determined by scores earned on the PSAT/NMSQT, which is administered in October. This year, over 1.5 million students took the exam. In the spring of the junior year, NMSC determines a national Selection Index qualifying score (critical reading + math + writing skills scores) for "Commended" recognition, which is calculated each year to yield students at about the 96th percentile (top 50,000 highest scorers). Qualifying levels change annually depending on how the top approxi-mately 50,000 high scorers fared. Notification is mailed to school principals in April regarding students who scored at or above this level. The prin-cipals then notify their students of their status. These students are given the opportunity to identify two colleges or universities to which they would like NMSC to send their scores. Dr. Lorelle Lamascus, Dean of MS & US remarked, “I congratulate the students on this wonderful achievement. It reflects both the talents and gifts of our students and the success of Catholic classical education in cultivating them!” Sister Mary Margaret, Director of Testing for the academy also commented, “This is remarkable, as it represents approximately 10% of the class. Three other students had comparable scores in one or more sections, but only those who excel in all three areas are commended.

All are invited to Holy Week Meditation: Pergolesi, Stabat Mater & Vivaldi, Concerto for Strings in G Minor, RV 157 at 4:00pm on Sunday, April 14 at Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church. This musical meditation depicts the profoundly dramatic and emotional journey of the Blessed Mother in her grief during the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Choristers of Our Lady of the Atonement, soloists Angela Malek and Crystal Johnson, and members of the instrumental ensemble Sonido Barroco will be featured.

The Stabat Mater invites us to experience the Cru-cifixion from the perspective of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Come and See If There Be Any Sorrow Like Unto My Sorrow.” Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s transcendent setting of this 13th century Latin se-quence was a deathbed composition for the 26-year-old. Commissioned by The Noble Order of the Knights of Our Lady of Sorrows in Naples in 1736 as a devotional work for the Fridays in Lent, Pergo-lesi’s Stabat Mater became the most printed work of the 18th century and to this day is the most per-formed version of the 750 compositional settings of this poem. A pastiche of Italian vocal styles both sacred and secular, the piece evokes catharsis in seemingly indiscriminate music genres, yet the overall effect is a profoundly dramatic and emotion-al journey of the Blessed Mother in her grief. In the opening and closing movements, the violins and voices exchange searing and mounting dissonances depicting Mary’s agony. In the first soprano aria, one hears the piercing sword passing through Mary’s heart in the high accented trills of the voice and violins. Pergolesi continues throughout the work, expressing the 12 stanzas of poetic lacrimosa as though scenes of an opera. The result is one of the most moving pieces in the sacred repertory. https://www.facebook.com/events/2116552011946697/
