Forming Material Terminology

• Ductility - ability to be elongated in one dimension while becoming thin in another dimension

• Elastic Limit - point at which material will not return to original shape

• Plastic Deformation - stretching metal enough to exceed its elastic limit and stopping prior to fracture

• Spring back - amount which material tries to return to its original shape after forming

Machine Considerations

• Sheet Gap– Definition: measurement between the top of a new

die and the bottom of a new punch in the forming position.

– Trumpf = 55.80mm

• Ram Operation– Hydraulic

What Limits Form Height?

• Machine Limitations– Trumpf recommends a maximum of 25mm

for form height. – This is a tool limitation, not a machine

limitation

• Material Limitations– An emboss stretches material– Some forms bend material like lance and

form– Material ductility– Form geometry

Programming Considerations

New Models (600 & 1000 series)

• Programmable ram heights• Customer can tell machine

tool length and depth• Necessary for

sheetmarker, rollerball

Old Models• No programmable ram• Require shimming• Tool positoning – 4 different

pin settings

Programming Considerations

500 Models • Programmable ram heights

– Not as flexible as newer models– Step-by-step like old models

• Not able to program tool length and depth• Not able to run sheetmarker, rollerball

Forming Tools Set-Up Information

• Older Machines– Length settings

• Pin positioning

• Die shims

• Newer Machines– Length settings

• UT-Offset (LDP Value)

– Forming position• OT-Offset (forming

mode) - height that form tool goes to after the form is made

What is the LDP Value?

• Linear Displacement Parameter (LDP)• Also known as UT Offset• Length setting• Necessary for newer models

– TC600 and 1000 series

LDP Calculator

Available in Excel file

Machine requires tool length measured from top of alignment ring to bottom of form

Set-up Information

• Necessary for our customers to use Mate Forming Tools.

• We deliver the same Set-up Information as Trumpf.• We send the information together with each forming tool

and sample sheet.• Pass/WT do not consistently send Set-up Information.

Set-up Information

• What information does the Trumpf customer need?– What is important for the programmer?– What is important for the operator?

Page 12: Trumpf Training Part 2

1212

Programmer

• He has to put the tool in the tool library before making the NC-code.

• Needs the following tool information:– Tool type (forming tool type 13)– UT-Offset (LDP)– Tool Length (example: 31,50mm)– Hole Diameter– Material Thickness

Page 13: Trumpf Training Part 2

1313

Operator

• The operator has to put the tool in the tool library before making the NC-code.

• The operator needs the following tool information:– Tool type (forming tool type 13)– Tool Length (example: 31,50mm)

Page 14: Trumpf Training Part 2

1414

Operator

• The operator cannot call up the punching program unless the tool is physically available at the machine.

• When all tools are available, the ToPs program is transferred to the Siemens control on the punch press.

NOTE: ToPs is Trumpf propietary software – other softwares may be used on Trumpf machines and terminology may vary

1515

Operator

• After the punching program is in the Siemens control, the operator can modify the tools one at a time.

Example: penetration or stroke settings

• These changes are made in the PTT table (tool library) on the machine.
