a) The undercroft of the 11th-century church of Feldebrő, which has a five-nave, centrally

13 This task is about the Counter-Reformation. (short) Using the sources and your own knowledge present the process of Catholic renewal in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. In your answer mention what the role of the arts was in this process and by what means they helped the full development of the Counter-Reformation.

"Anyone wishing to enter our society which we named after Jesus to become a warrior of God under the banner of the cross and only to serve the Lord and his vicar, the pope, should, after a solemn vow of chastity, be ready spiritually to join a society which holds as its aims to take care of souls according to the doctrines of Christianity, to spread the faith by preaching to the public, to serve the word of God, to conduct spiritual exercises, to teach children and those who are ignorant about Christianity, to hear confessions, and to confirm Christians in their faith." 17 This task is about the Árpád period. (short) Describe the role of the process of the foundation of the Christian monarchy and that of the establishment of the state structure in social changes of the period.

“1. Ten villages must build a church, which is to be supplied with two plots of land, the same number of slaves, horses and mares, six oxen and two cows, and thirty fowls. The king must provide the vestments and the altar-cloth, while the bishop must provide the priest and the books. 18. If God gives somebody ten of something in a year, the tenth part must be presented to God; and if somebody hides it, they shall pay nine parts. If somebody steals from the tenth which belongs to the bishop, he shall be convicted as a thief and the bishop shall receive all the compensation.” (From the Second Book of Laws of Saint Stephen, 1030-1038)

If a knight or a wealthy man commits the same sin, he shall give the relatives ten

Using the sources and your own knowledge, analyse the different conceptions for the unification of the country between 1541 and 1629 and the obstacles to their realisation.

“The contract with the Queen (that is Isabel) has been executed, and the army of King Ferdinand has occupied the country. Receiving news of this, the Turks have taken up arms and attacked us with a strong army […] I am afraid that the Turks will defeat us in the winter months. […] It cannot be that we, who shed the yoke of the Turks and offered ourselves to serve the Christian princes in the hope of freedom, shall be betrayed. (…) One makes Halina cloth [a coarse broad-cloth], while three factories, in Gács, Temesvár, and Podhering, produce broad-cloth. They make woollen goods in Óvár, leather goods in Moson County, coaches in Buda and Nagyvárad, hosiery in Pozsony, while there are several factories which produce iron and copper pans and tools. In some estates they produce saltpetre, alum, lye, and winestone. At the first industrial exhibition (1842) Kossuth became convinced that the more highly developed Austrian and Czech industries would stifle any Hungarian initiatives if they were to join in a common customs area. This situation required protective duties. The Lower Chamber passed the independent Hungarian system of protective duties during the parliamentary period of 1843-44, but the king postponed serious talks on the issue. After this, the opposition formed the non-governmental Védegylet society (1844) to protect Hungarian industry. Chronology: 1933 Gömbös visits Hitler. The trade agreement between Germany and Hungary opens the German market to Hungarian produce. 1935 Gömbös attempts to introduce a system of representation of interests (corporation) and a one-party system.

“I have been assigned a difficult task […] I hope that the nation will appreciate my past actions and assist me, because we can only overcome these difficulties by working together in harmony […] Internally and externally alike, I profess peaceful work and the means which are necessary to achieve it. I profess the idea of national self-interest, because under the current circumstances and in the situation that Hungary is in at present this is the only ideal a political leader and a political nation may hold […] I feel and I believe that the spirit of the whole nation needs to be transformed. The fact that we have not been able to enjoy the opportunities of an independent national existence makes it necessary for the nation to be spiritually transposed into the intellectual sphere of an independent Hungary […] I consider equally Hungarian all who faithfully serve the nation with me and others in government offices. I call for a fight against all extremes, and I maintain constitutionality under all circumstances, because without it there is no peaceful work, or national consolidation […] Everyone must help to facilitate production and to invigorate the economy. I intend to strike down anyone who in these days, when all sections of society are engaged in a desperate struggle to survive, wants to play the part of the usurer […] I have called for my colleagues to acquaint them with my national work plan, the aim of which […] is to serve as a guide for the government and the nation as well […] I intend to be the builder and the leader of the new generation. “They had power, which had the strength of an iron fist. It was in their power to make selections, to classify works as authorised or not authorised, good or bad, to blacklist writers, to ban certain works, to dismiss the editorial board of a newspaper, or to suspend institutions and then give them permission to work again. […] The basic principle was the peaceful coexistence of politics and literature.
