Intro to TriYoga Chikitsa चिकित्सा : TY-Therapeutics

Taught by approved instructors

15 contact hours

Description: A wholistic approach based on the principles of yoga lifestyle, the aim of TY-Therapeutics ~ Chikitsa is to restore and maintain balance and health in the physical, subtle and causal body (the three bodies) and five sheaths, or koshas . The word Chikitsa is derived from the Sanskrit root word “kit”, meaning removal or eradication . Chikitsa is healing by removing the dis-ease from the body and by avoiding the causations . Causes may include diet, stress or injury .

The TY-Chikitsa practice includes Daily 1, 3 and 5 strengthening and stretching sequences to support overall health and adapted for specific needs . Supported postures can be held several minutes or longer with rhythmic breathing and mindful awareness . The postures encourage connective tissue (fascia) and muscle to heal and lengthen, joints to become more mobile and ease of movement to return . The healing power of prana responds to this natural surrender of body where asana and yoga nidra merge . Alpha brain waves and deeper meditative states are experienced as awareness expands . TY-Therapeutics is helpful for recovery from pain, illness or injury; for relaxation, restoration, rejuvenation; and for those who would like one asana at a time . This is ideal for those who are just beginning, yet also beneficial for all levels of yoga experience .

TY-Free the Hips ~ TY-Free the Spine

Description: Learn a wide variety of hip-opening sequences and series that focus on hips to toes to create greater health and vitality in the pelvic region, hips, legs, feet and toes . Experience the six directional movements of the hips — flexion and extension, internal and external rotation, and abduction and adduction . Free the ability of the pelvis to move, allowing fluidity of movement in forward and backward bends, as well as rotation and side bending . Release deep patterns of tension and feel the flow of increased energy with opened, balanced pelvis/hips .

Learn spine-energizing sequences and series that emphasize wavelike spinal movements which increase strength, flexibility and energy in the spine as well as the chest, abdomen, shoulders, arms and hands . Move the spine vertebra by vertebra within its full six-directional range: flexion (forward bend), extension (backward bend), right and left rotation (twist), right and left lateral flexion (side bend) . The body is as healthy as the spine is flexible . Awaken the spine and feel the healing flow of prana .

TY-Wall Flow

Description: TY-Wall Flow is a comprehensive asana practice for those who require the support that a wall gives . Doing postures at the wall allows greater access to many asanas that may require more flexibility, strength and balance when experienced away from the wall .

Yogaflow sequences focus on specific areas of the body from freeing the hips to shoulder opening, and from standing postures to inversions . This course offers wall sequences for special needs; many with physical limitations require the stability a wall provides . TY-Wall Flow also includes support for intermediate and advanced postures . Practices are introduced systematically through the levels .

TY-Chair Flow

Taught by Jasmin Jinn or approved instructors

Description: TY-Chair Flow incorporates asana and kriya in two ways: standing using a chair for support; or sitting in a chair, for example, in class, at home, at work or on an airplane . The practices are introduced systematically with beginning, intermediate and advanced levels .

Chair-supported sequences allow more accessibility to yoga for those who are less mobile, have challenges with proprioception or balance, or have difficulty moving from standing to the ground and back to standing . The sequences can be adapted for those with disabilities or health challenges who may have less control over their movements .

TY-Chair Flow can be for those who require chair-supported yoga, or it can supplement your yoga practice . When the principles of yogaflow are applied with focus on posture, breath and mudra, TY-Chair Flow provides the myriad benefits of TriYoga practice, including improved flexibility, strength, endurance, balance, breath, focus and relaxation .

Jasmin has studied with Kaliji since 1984 . When Kaliji first introduced TY-Chair Flow, Jasmin knew that this is what she wanted to teach . TY-Prenatal

Description: TY-Prenatal is designed for expectant mothers to be able to practice yoga throughout their pregnancy . A regular yoga practice is nurturing and helps to counter some of the side effects which may arise . As the baby grows, prenatal yoga supports the nine-month journey and helps in preparation for delivery . The teacher learns to guide and assist the yoga practice for each of the three trimesters with supportive postures and flows, props and modifications . The course helps one understand the physical and anatomic changes, common experiences and unique issues related to this transformative period . As the various changes unfold, the yoga practice is well-rounded and mindful of specific needs . For postpartum, the mother can continue with Basics .

It is important to care for the hips and spine . Increases in several hormones result in many of the changes related to pregnancy and childbirth . In preparation for larger body size and childbirth, the hips become more flexible with the release of hormones that soften and relax the joints in the pelvis . At the same time there is pressure on the hips due to extra weight . A strong pelvic floor is needed to support this weight and also for a more comfortable labor and delivery . Free the hip sequences strengthen and stretch the legs, hips, and pelvic floor while improving blood flow and circulation . The increased blood flow also supports healing after delivery .

The center of gravity changes as the baby and uterus grow; the abdominal muscles overstretch and overwork to compensate for this expansion . As a result, the abdominal muscles weaken and the lower back lordotic curve increases as the front of the body expands . This can strain back muscles, resulting in back discomfort . Free the spine sequences build strength in the back and abdominal muscles while opening the chest, allowing the breath to flow .

With continued gravity shifts, there is increased pressure on the feet and other joints . Edema and pronation are common problems, along with leg cramping and varicose veins due to weight gain . Posture sequences with elevation of the legs, ankles and feet are introduced to decrease edema and improve circulation .

Prenatal incorporates rhythmic breathing practices and meditation to increase energy and calmness . TY-Prenatal provides a special time for bonding with the soul yet to be seen, but can be felt . These practices are a beautiful way to be welcomed to Earth .

TY-Seniors

Description: With more than fourteen million yoga practitioners over the age of fifty in the United States (2016 Yoga in America Study), the over-fifty group is the fastest growing yoga demographic, making yoga classes for seniors increasingly popular . More active than before, most people at age fifty do not identify as seniors . As people live longer, older individuals who practice yoga can have a higher quality of life . A therapeutic practice for healthy aging, yoga is offered at yoga studios, community and senior centers, as well as retirement and nursing facilities .

Health challenges, both physical and mental, can increase with age . A yoga lifestyle, including asana, pranayama, meditation and healthy vegan diet, improves body-mind health . Scientific reports show that yoga and diet are helpful in the management of many health conditions . Changes that can come with healthy aging such as greater acceptance, patience and wisdom are also enhanced . Scientific studies demonstrate that yoga has great benefit for joint health, stronger bones, better balance, mobility and stability, and improved physical, psychological and cognitive function .

Based on therapeutic principles of movement, TY-Seniors includes postures, sequences and series that allow older practitioners to relax and enjoy greater ease of movement as they gain strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and breath control at their own pace . Props, wall and chairs for those who can not easily sit or stand for longer periods are used to modify postures as needed and to support balance . Regular yoga practice can bring more relaxation-in-action and flow to life activities .

Pratyahara

TY-Yoga Nidra

Description: Life is evolution . Yoga nidra provides involution . When the physical body surrenders into total relaxation, the body is energized, providing the mental body with increased energy and thus heightened awareness . With the increased awareness, one becomes more stable in the witness state . Through practice, one is not pulled or distracted by the five senses, the jnana-indriyas . This withdrawal from the senses is known as pratyahara, the fifth limb of the eight-limb path . Yoga nidra is a practice of pratyahara . With this natural involution, the body reduces tension and the mind lets go of unnecessary thoughts . In this two-part process, the body relaxes, then the flow of prana increases, allowing the mind to calm . As this state is sustained, the inward flow results in a state similar to deep sleep though one is conscious, present . In this state, it is within the causal body, the bliss sheath surrounding the soul, that one is energized . Yoga nidra touches every part of the body and is far-reaching as it expands to create access to the inner states . With self-contemplation, the body and mind will have increased ability to involute, to turn within . The result is complete relaxation, a perfect preparation for meditation .

Simply saying “relax” does not create yoga nidra . Relaxing on your back supported in comfort is only the beginning . Techniques give guidance to let go of outer layers and discover the place of relaxation within . Peaceful ambiance, guided relaxations, visualizations, mantras, and selected music all assist in inducing the relaxed state . Most important, though, is to develop one’s ability to go inside, to involute from the physical, waking state of awareness to subtle realms of the mind — the witness state where brain waves resonate in deeper levels of consciousness . Yoga nidra is an essential practice to have in life and for the spiritual journey . Stress is detrimental to the body-mind and inhibits one’s sense of well-being . Directly reducing stress through the path of relaxation, yoga nidra results in radiant body-mind health inspired from within . This is letting go into the inner flow . Om Svaha .

TY-Mudra Flow

Description: From simple to complex, flowing one into the next or sustained, hasta mudras facilitate healing and meditation . These mystical hand gestures directly influence the flow of prana for health, mental focus, and deeper spiritual awareness . Just as outer gestures assist in communication with others, hasta mudras are for inner communication and as such, they require pratyahara .

Categories of mudra include those with one hand only; both hands engaged in a symmetrical mudra; or each hand in a different mudra . Benefits evolve from developing supple and strong fingers, to improving health, to the sacred geometry of the hands expressed through hasta mudra, allowing one to communicate with the divine .

From ancient times, there have been references to mudra both in literary and visionary form . Nearly lost, the art and science of mudra has only recently re-emerged . One can dive deeply into mudra vidya with over 1,300 Devi Mudras that have come forth, expressed through Kaliji, from the flow of kundalini energy .

TriYoga: Art & Science of Yogaflow®TriYoga is inspired from its source in kriyavati, yoga sadhana guided by kundalini . TriYoga is the originator of the concept of “flow” in hatha yoga, as it was brought to the yoga world in the 1980s at the International Yoga Conference with Devi Dance . The audience was spellbound as they observed the seamless yogaflow, prasara, seeing their static postures come alive . Prasara is beyond vinyasa, which is the organization of asana . Prasara is to flow without thought .

Yogaflow is the precise flow of posture, breath, and focus — that is, yogasana, pranayama and mudra — embracing qualities which insure effortless movement; these inherent characteristics include relaxation-in-action, wavelike movements, rhythmic pacing, economy of motion, alignment maintained, and expansion in all directions .

From January 5, 1980 to the present day, kriyavati siddhi continues through Kaliji manifesting TriYoga sadhana, a miracle to witness and to experience .

Devi Dance

When TriYoga began, it was a dance of Devi with an abundance of mudras gracefully flowing, synchronized with breath and a wave of geometrically aligned postures . With no prior practice in hatha yoga, the fountain of yogaflow was born reflecting a cosmic dance . This was a dance that flowed like no other dance . Since the eventful day it began, TriYoga has danced around the planet into over 40 countries .

From Devi Dance, the manifestation evolved into systematic levels and series to teach each asana and kriya . Learning these movements, one can involute into Devi Dance . The freedom to move from within, to feel the flow guide, is an exhilarating form of meditation . The intuitive flow emerges as one feels they are an energy river dancing with the divine . This is Nata Yoga, the yoga of dance . Applying the wealth of TriYoga knowledge, an experienced TriYogi feels which sequence, which asana or kriya, their body needs to maintain the energy flow with a fluid expression of yogasana, pranayama and mudra . As the energy increases from this synergy, meditation to blissful ananda emerges . Creation is a universal dance between the divine and all souls . Reflect this higher wisdom through Devi Dance . Let the energy guide and consciousness expand .

Ayurveda, sister to yoga

ayur (or ayus) — life; veda — knowledge or science

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest medical healthcare systems . Originally taught through the oral tradition in Sanskrit, it is a comprehensive healing science . The fundamentals of Ayurveda are found in the Vedas, the Hindu scriptures dating back over 6,000 years . With “veda" part of the word's etymology, Ayurveda's rich connection with Vedic culture is shown . In 3rd century BCE, Sage Charaka was one of the principal contributors, making it more accessible . From these origins, Ayurveda has been passed from generation to generation up to the present day .

Ayurveda, based on Samkhya philosophy, states that physical matter is made from five elements combined in different proportions: space, air, fire, water and earth . The five elements are combinations of the three universal energies or gunas: sattva, rajas and tamas . The gunas and the elements reflect in the mind-body as doshas: vata (space-air), pitta (fire) and kapha (water-earth) . The health of mind-body is dependent on the harmony and balance of the doshas (tridosha) .

In Ayurveda, treatment ranges from removing the cause of dis-ease to full treatment . The three steps in the management of dis-ease are known as tri-sutras and include: hetu, causative factors; linga, signs and symptoms; and aushadha, treatment . The first Ayurvedic mode of treatment (eka-vidha chikitsa) nidan parivarjan — is the avoidance of causative and precipitating factors of disease . (Nidana is understanding the cause of the imbalance and parivarjana means to avoid the causes of the imbalance .) Thus, one learns to avoid the causative factors of disease . Nidanparivarjana helps make the treatment easy, as the root cause will be removed supported by pathya — diet and lifestyle changes .

Ayurveda honors the cycles of nature that influence health . It uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintain the balance of the body-mind-consciousness . Understanding that each person has a unique bodily constitution and a distinct balance required for health, lifestyle and nutritional guidelines can be adapted to one’s individual needs . This course is an overview of the basic principles of Ayurveda, knowledge to become more conscious in your lifestyle choices .

Fundamentals of Ayurveda

Taught by Sheela Chokshi, M .D .

Description: In this course, students learn the fundamentals of Ayurveda including the following topics: defining Ayurveda; five basic elements principle (panchamahabhuta); dosha, dhatu, mala principle; similarity and dissimilarity principle (samanya vishesha); Ayurvedic approach to dietary discipline; Ayurvedic approach to daily routine; and the eight branches of Ayurveda .

Dr . Sheela Chokshi is an internal medicine and integrative medicine-trained physician with over thirty years of clinical experience . She was appointed the founding physician l eader of the Integrative Medicine Program at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in Florida . Her clinical background allowed her to combine the science of medicine and technology with the mind-body philosophy of self-care, self-healing and well-being . In 2019, she became a certified TriYoga Basics teacher . In 2020, Dr . Chokshi left TGH to further her studies and teachings in Yoga and Ayurveda .

Puja

Living in a cosmic, romantic dance with our great beloved, the divine presence, we endlessly play hide-and-seek through various journeys and forms . Forgetting there is a divine presence, we look outside for our only source of love . Yet, outside sources are only reflections like the moon reflects the light of the sun . Serving as a devotional way to focus concentration, puja is an entrance into meditation . The mind immerses in mantra, sacred sound, while the senses engage with the visual ceremony . In this way, puja is another form of nada pashyanti, sound-light concentration .

Puja dates back to the Rig Veda, the first of the four Vedas . This course includes the traditional sixteen-step puja and pujas of varying lengths for special occasions . Puja can be performed prior to and at the conclusion of yoga sadhana or simply as a way to greet each morning or to conclude each day . Puja opens the door of communication to the presence within . It is a mirror to reflect divinity and all the divine qualities within . Puja speaks heart to heart .

Meditation

Meditation is an intimate part of spirituality, religion and philosophy . In yoga, it is the seventh limb of the eight-limb path described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali . Meditation is a state of being conscious moment to moment as the mind calms . The witness state is present while the focus remains on the object of concentration . The object is initially external such as observing the breath; then, it becomes subtle, observing thought waves .

Self-reflection or self-study is essential in understanding the thoughts, feelings, desires and attachments that live in the mind . The mind can be seen as a garden where weeds or unhelpful thoughts must be removed and positive thoughts planted . Identifying one’s sankalpa (determination or plan) and living it is meditation-in-action . Dharana (the sixth limb of the eight-limb path) includes various concentration techniques to steady the mind . This course includes these techniques and provides deeper understanding of meditation .

Sanskrit Names for Basics 108

Taught by TYI Sanskrit Team

Prerequisite: Sanskrit 1

Sanskrit is the mother language of yoga though yoga can be taught in all languages . Sanskrit vocabulary is rich, making it ideal for full expression . For example, the one English word water can be expressed and described precisely by selecting from fifty different Sanskrit words . With this variety of word choices, it is natural for different schools of yoga, different lineages, to have different names for asanas . The names must be consistent in a given yoga method . For worldwide consistency and ease of reference in TriYoga, the Sanskrit names are important to learn .

Dream Yoga

Dream Yoga is maintaining conscious awareness during the sleep state . Consciousness is continuous, only memory appears not to be . In the West, lucid dream is the term used for this conscious travel . The yogi uses this opportunity to explore consciousness and to prepare for dharma, life’s mission . For dream yoga, first the art of relaxation, yoga nidra is developed . Yoga nidra provides total relaxation to easily enter sleep . Then, as nidra (sleep) emerges, dream yoga guides one on the conscious bridge to the subtle and causal realms . In dream yoga, the dreamer is consciously dreaming their dream or choosing actions .

Since the physical senses do not have the limiting power to distract as in the waking state, this practice can be used for self-study leading to meditation . The subconscious is cleansed through direct ability to observe the mind . Through dream yoga, some learn to communicate with friends, family and beings incarnated or not incarnated on Earth at this time . Dream yoga sadhana enhances clarity in waking life while the body achieves a restful night of sleep .

There are three states of awareness: waking, dream and deep sleep . If one sleeps the recommended seven to nine hours per night, this means one-third of life is experienced while sleeping . This is reason enough to develop yoga nidra and dream yoga . High yogis have left their body consciously at their time of departure from Earth . This type of siddhi, accomplishment, is the perfection of dream yoga . This course includes ways to achieve a more restful sleep, the study of dreams and the philosophy of soul travel .

Yogis in the Skies: Siddhis, Crop Circles and ET Visits

Chapter 3 of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali speaks of the siddhis, yogic accomplishments, that develop in the advanced states of meditation and samadhi . One can transcend commonly accepted human limitations through extraordinary powers, such as crystal-clear discrimination and intuition, the ability to manifest ideas that benefit others, or the capacity to concentrate on any object and obtain knowledge of it . Ultimately, the greatest siddhi is control over the mind to reside in universal consciousness .

Yoga philosophy speaks of different lokas, dwelling places or homes, for souls of various frequencies . The higher the frequency the yogi vibrates in, the more the opportunities for soul travel . Exemplifying this, beings of high accomplishments with siddhis unknown to humankind such as instant materialization or moving through matter, have been witnessed; they demonstrate high levels of telepathy and can communicate with effortless ease in any language .

Since the 1990s, over 10,000 crop circles have manifested in seconds by unseen forces, while unidentified objects and white spheres have been observed nearby . The precision in the creation of crop circles is not possible by humans, especially in the seconds they appear . In addition, thousands of encounters with beings of unknown origin have been reported . This course provides an overview of these phenomena .

TY-Nada Upasana – Absorption in Sound

Taught by Kaliji or approved instructors

12 hours, contact or non-contact

Description: Nada Upasana, as expressed in the philosophy of nada yoga, is absorption in sacred sound . Many philosophical and religious texts speak of the beginning as sound . Scientists express this concept as the “Big Bang” . Yet, what is this beginning of creation? This ongoing creation is actually a circle, the endless middle . The cosmic circle is illustrated throughout creation . We live on a circle called Earth . Our circular planet circles another circle, the sun . The moon, a circle, circles earth . The seasons repeat in a cyclical pattern . Cycles are circles . Due to the rotation of the earth on its axis, constantly spinning, there is the cycle of day and night . It appears that the sun rises and sets . The eyes we see through, the nostrils we breathe through, the open mouth we speak through are all circles . Breath in and breath out, one continuous circle . In nada yoga, this circle is called OM, the primordial sound that permeates all existence .

Yoga includes the awareness that energy and consciousness are united . When two become one, there is a vibration . This vibration which is eternal and continuous is known in yoga as Omkara . Scientists listening to the vastness of space have detected a steady, unceasing tone in B flat . Yogis can hear nadam, the unstruck sound that resonates from anahata cakra . This sound draws one into the vast fourth dimension . The celestial sound is heard and, like the pied piper, guides .

Ask most anyone to list their greatest joys in life and music will be one . When a memory comes to mind, often a song heard at the time the event took place plays inside like an inner radio . The far-reaching benefits of music have inspired musicologists to research and author books on the effects of sound on the body, mind and psyche . As beneficial as it is to listen to music, even greater benefits can be derived from learning to play an instrument .

In this course, expand your musical ear by learning to sing or play the harmonium or keyboard . Vocal exercises, known as Sarali Varisai, are offered . From the classic Carnatic music system of South India, these fundamental vocal sequences give support in melody and rhythm . The sequences, taught systematically, ascend and descend in three rhythms . For learning and practicing, notation for the vocal exercises and twenty-seven Sanskrit chants is provided . Nada yoga philosophy and music theory are included .

This course is open to all regardless of musical background . If already proficient with an instrument, one could learn another instrument, such as a drummer can learn to play piano or to sing . The Sanskrit word, Sangita, is the word for music . Music is seen as the combination of three aspects: voice, instrument and dancer . Rhythm is inherent in music . When rhythm begins, the body moves . Dance is part of music and music is part of dance . To sing, play an instrument and dance markedly lifts the spirit and at the same time greatly enhances health .

Ananda Tandava ~ dance of bliss

Taught by approved instructors

12 hours, contact or non-contact

Like two great rivers coming together, there is an intimate relationship between sacred dance and hatha yoga . In Indian mythology, Nataraja is the cosmic dancer, the form of the divine who dances creation into existence . When seeking the divine, yoga is the dance to return one to the source . Sacred dance begins with a pranam to bhumi, earth . In a symbolically similar way, a yoga series starts with (Upward Salute to) Earthtouch . TriYoga flows like a dance, conscious rhythmic movements empowered by breath . Both sacred dance and TriYoga (with its wavelike movements) reflect an offering to the divine .

Both in yoga and dance, there is a balancing of opposites into union . In hatha yoga, ha (sun) and tha (moon) represent the masculine and feminine . In Indian classical dance, the balance is between tandava (masculine) and lasya (feminine) . Tandava relates to Shiva with strong, powerful movements in the lower body . Lasya is the dance of Shakti, with the upper body’s flowing, graceful movements . This is purusha and prakriti; sound and light . To provide such skill in dance, yoga training is needed . The culmination of yoga is the cosmic dance .

Dance, a natural basic expression, is found in many spiritual communities and religions, and portrays positive messages through movement . Natya Shastra, the oldest surviving Sanskrit text on the performing arts written between 200 BCE and 200 CE, consists of 6,000 sutras within 36 chapters detailing all aspects of classical Indian theater . In sutras on dance, the major limbs (angas) to the minor limbs (upangas), are taught in full detail . The temple dancers were known as devadasis, servants of the divine . South Indian classical dances emerged from this tradition . All feel rhythm and everyone can dance; children dance spontaneously . The temple-body, like a wave, can resonate with sound waves . The dance expresses the inherent joy where the dancer and dance become one .

Therapeutic benefits of dance are far reaching, including improvements in mood, metabolism and the cardiovascular/respiratory systems; better balance, proprioception, coordination and motor skills; and the release of endorphins with the resulting positive effects such as better brain function . To improve cognition, research shows that involvement in activities that require quick decisions, such as when engaging the brain in new learning, leads to greater intelligence . New patterns of movement, as in dance, require one to be fully present with continuous split-second decisions . Thus, the benefits are enhanced even more .

The course focuses on Garbha, a sacred dance that celebrates universal energy . Performed throughout India and worldwide, this circular dance with its fluid flowing movements and hands clapping in unison, has many variations including the Raas and Dandiya Raas, Indian stick dance . Learn Garbha dance sequences to bring dance to your community of friends .
