Library Orientation

• Purposes of this session – Introduce new students to the library’s

resources and organization– For others: refresh memories and show you

what is new– Nice and easy grade for your English class if

you listen!

Computer lab/laptops

• Lab is a research lab and classroom

• Teachers sign up for use

• Laptops are used only when lab is not available

• Sign-off and replace laptops by plugging in

• Familiarize yourself with the rules as posted

• No surfing, sorry!

Organization of Books

• Color-coded (posted on wall)

• Non-fiction (Blue or Blue/Green)

• Fiction (Red, Gold, Green)

• Biography (Yellow)

• Reference (Black)

• All arranged by Dewey Decimal System

(Posted on wall)

Reference Books

• Black barcode label• Encyclopedias• Almanacs• Dictionaries• Atlases/globe• Bartlett’s Quotations• Literary Criticism series• Citations

Other materials

• Books-on-tape

• Magazines

• Young Adult Browsing Rack and Shelf– Magazines specially marked may be checked

out for 24 hours– Graphic novels, comics, special interest– Newest titles

Catalog - OPAC

• OPAC system (Online Public Access Catalog)

• Located on 3 library computers• 4 ways of searching

– Title– Author– Subject– Key Words

Check out procedure

• Sign-out sheet in 3 ring binder– 3 books at a time– Reference books (black label) with permission– Name and 5 digit barcode– Stamp return date– Two weeks check-out– Renew if needed– Late fee of 10 cents a day
