Tribute to the Millions

Let us remember those who so selflessly gave their lives at home and abroad, whose

sacrifice enables us to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today.

Let us remember those who came home

wounded, physically and mentally, and the friends and family who cared for them.

Let us remember those who returned to

restore their relationships and rebuild their working lives after years of dreadful

conflict and turmoil.

Let us remember the families that lost husbands, sons and sweethearts.

Let us remember the servicemen, merchant

seamen, miners, brave civilians and others from Commonwealth and Allied countries who fought, suffered and died during

several years of war.

Let us remember those in reserved occupation and to the brave people who

kept us safe on the home front—the doctors and nurses who cared for the wounded,

the women and men who toiled in the fields, those who worked in the factories,

who all played such a vital role in the war effort at home.

VE Day 75

The Fifth Sunday of Easter 10th May 2020, 10.00 a.m. Remembering the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe

Praying for the Peace and Welfare of the Nations.

Collect Almighty God,

who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ

have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life:

grant that, as by your grace going before us

you put into our minds good desires,

so by your continual help

we may bring them to good effect;

through Jesus Christ our risen Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Collect for Peace Almighty God,

from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:

kindle in the hearts of all people the true love of peace;

and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom

those who take counsel for the nations of the earth;

that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward,

till the earth is filled with the knowledge of thy love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Acts 7. 55 to end 55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus

standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son

of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud

shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began

to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named

Saul. 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then

he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”

When he had said this, he died.

John 14.1-14 14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s

house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to

prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will

take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way to

the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are

going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the

life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my

Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9 Jesus said to him,

“Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has

seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak

on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the

Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works

themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I

do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will

do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my

name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

Please sponsor her to knit as many nurses as she can by 31st

May. You will also be entered into a raffle to win one of the dolls.

ALAN NETHERWOOD—RIP

Thank you to my Church family for the many messages of condolence received by my family and myself following Alan's sudden death. They have been of great comfort. I look forward to the day when we can all be together again at St. Giles. Until then stay safe and well. Special thanks to Canon June for her support throughout this sad time.

A NOTE CONCERNING GIVING FROM DAVID LEIGH, OUR TREASURER

The CofE Stewardship and Income Generation Team has asked us to highlight the impact of the decline in income from lettings, donations and offertories during the current Coronavirus outbreak.

A significant number (45%) of our parishioners already donate via Direct Debit and Standing Orders from their banks and we are extremely grateful for that contribution. In the current circumstances, we would like to encourage individuals who would normally bring cash into church to continue making their weekly/monthly contributions via their bank. This will make a significant difference to our cash flow in the weeks and months ahead.

Equally, at this time, many people may be concerned about income and livelihoods and we do not want them to feel any additional burden of worry about their financial giving at this time.

If you would like to change your method of giving to Direct Debit, you can do this by contacting your bank by phone (if you have the Telephone Banking facility) or online if you have internet banking. Although you can visit your bank in person to make this change, we are not encouraging you to consider this option during the current lockdown period.

Details of our church bank account are as follows:

Account Name: St Giles Parochial Church Council

Bank: Yorkshire Bank, 25 Ropergate, Pontefract, WF8 1LQ

Sort Code: 05-06-71

Account Number: 16172795

With every good wish to you all. Stay safe.

David Leigh

Treasurer

This year’s Christian Aid Week has needed to adapt to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on all our lives. It is important to be hopeful for the future and thankful for all the gifts of time and donations normally made in this period. A huge thank you is expressed for all the support given during last year’s Christian Aid Week. £613.73 was sent from Pontefract in addition to individual online donations.

There is a new Christian Aid Emergency Appeal: the Coronavirus Emergency Appeal. Many people displaced by war or conflict and living in extreme poverty are likely to have poor health and nutrition and live in overcrowded communities which lack even the basic facilities of clean water and sanitation. They are likely to be extremely vulnerable to Covid-19. Further details including how to make an online donation are available on the website https://www.christianaid.org.uk Please see the May magazine for a full report by Paul and Ann Harris http://www.stgilespontefract.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Parish-Mag-May-2020-compressed.pdf
