119 The most significant strengths of the district have to be the following: 1. The food service in theschool because of the perfect price and good food choices. 2. Cleaning has also improved onevery campus in the district, and just proper cleaning materials will work under any circumstance.3. Teaching has been a major strength in the district, wonderful skill and ability for the school torun on an organized learning program. Staff members have also been a major impact on thedistrict.

127 One of the top strengths I've noticed is the teachers have good relations with their students, andthey give them room to make errors yet still fix them. The second strength is how peacefuleveryone is with each other for such a large school.

# RESPONSES DATE

1 Recognize student tests are irrelevant to their future. Brick schools are expensive to operate.Recognize worthless curriculum and implement worthwhile curriculum and innovate.

2/6/2018 11:52 AM

2 Low staff morale. Nepotism in the District Office. Favoritism in hiring 2/3/2018 12:09 PM

3 1) 2017 partisan majority board replaced the ASBA-approved Meet and Confer policy andauthored and approved a collective bargaining agreement in which the superintendent is not anamed participant. 2) Board members not working as a cohesive group, and a failure to openlydiscuss issues between all board members before calling for a vote.

2/3/2018 10:52 AM

4 1. City growth 2. Lack of resources 3. Political ideals of board members 2/1/2018 3:32 PM

5 The district needs to continue looking for ways to save money for operating costs and how moremoney can be freed up to use for teachers' classroom activities.

2/1/2018 10:50 AM

6 breakdown in communication between community, district and school sites lack of transparency 1/31/2018 1:37 PM

7 Morale is not good Gossip among teachers Transient population Poverty 1/30/2018 7:42 AM

8 Finding a good leader - look local. We've got lots of good leaders in the area. Take a serious lookat Dr. Wright. She would serve this district and the community well. Getting the Governing Board toset politics aside

1/28/2018 8:44 AM

9 Lack of follow through by administrators and adherence to federal and state laws 1/26/2018 10:37 PM

1/24/2018 2:27 PM

14 The biggest issue in the Casa Grande Union District is the major drug problem we have withstudents, and on campus. Yes, we know. How much drugs a year are brought upon each andevery campus? How much are sold? All I'm doing is complaining because i'm not going to offersolutions.

1/24/2018 1:37 PM

15 Some of the teachers are disrespectful to certain students. 1/24/2018 11:30 AM

16 Too much change over in leadership Divided board Board politics 1/24/2018 10:34 AM

17 The lack of funds, the lack of teachers, and the lack of care 1/24/2018 9:58 AM

18 two or more challenges and issues facing the district are lack of communication with staff andstudents .

1/24/2018 9:16 AM

19 communication, technology, unwilling to learn students 1/24/2018 8:58 AM

20 Too many people scratching each other’s backs and forgetting that it should be about making ourchildren successful not our adults. Getting our children prepared for the future rather than doing inthe now process. These kids are not prepared to go off to college. They don’t know how to study, they don’t know how to make adult decisions, they are told sports is more important thaneducation but it’s not going to make them successful.

21 The major challenge I have seen is the willingness of the board to work with the superintendent, that there be no more personal vendettas against the superintendent when issues at hand do notgo their way and hinder the process, that the board recognize they are there to enhance studentsuccess along with working to uplift students and staff by leaving their personal issues out of theboardroom to govern appropriately in doing what they were elected to do.

1/24/2018 6:37 AM

22 The current school board’s ties to the teachers and the CGEA is a challenge that is bad for thestudents in the long run. This will also lead to another toxic relationship with the newsuperintendent

1/23/2018 11:34 PM

23 1. Lack of funding 2. High number of free and reduced lunch population 3. Need more technologyteaching tools

1/23/2018 9:18 PM

24 Tenured Teachers running the show behind the scenes. Having family and friends on district boardmaking decisions for teachers, not for district or children. Teachers not teaching children ie watchtechnology or read the book. Little to no teaching from the Teacher. Board is not profession ieyelling, talking over each other, not meeting all board requirements required by state.

1/23/2018 9:09 PM

25 Bad teachers who refuse to be held accountable. The Board that listens to the under performingteachers.

1/23/2018 7:04 PM

26 Trust...Loyalty...respect for staff and students 1/23/2018 10:30 AM

27 Not being able to show kindness to staff! Not being able to keep an open mind when others don’tagree with you!!

1/22/2018 5:04 PM

28 Lack of trust between employees and leadership. District needs a healing period... someone whocan assemble a good team to do the work of this district.

1/22/2018 1:49 PM

29 letting Dr. Goodsell go. 10 steps forward with him- 50 back! Steve Merrill leaving. 1/22/2018 1:38 PM

30 1. The current school board. 2. The current school board 3. THE CURRENT SCHOOL BOARD!We need to have a recall and get a board that is serving the best interest of our ENTIRE District. The majority of our school board are only serving on the board to get their own agenda's passed. Itis sickening to go to a board meeting a watch our school board fight like children. I have watchedthem pass their own agenda's and not listen to what is in the best interest of our students andstaff. Our current School Board is a disease that is killing our school district. Until we get memberson the board who are serving with the purpose of best interest for our students, staff, we will notmove forward.

1/22/2018 9:51 AM

35 Lack of money; over crowed classrooms, 1/21/2018 8:04 AM

36 The few squeaky wheels. Communication 1/20/2018 11:24 AM

37 Both the staff, and district board have a long history of toxic division, forming into small groups towork against one another instead of with one another. Not only have the teaching staff and boarddivided against themselves, they have also separated themselves from the community. Thus, endangering community support.

1/20/2018 10:57 AM

38 The district faces challenges with finding effective leadership. The district also has problemskeeping the cockroaches out of Vista Grande!!! They are literally everywhere in the JROTC andcullinary building and it is disgusting and brings possibilities of serious health problems to studentsand staff.

1/20/2018 12:04 AM

1/19/2018 7:52 AM

44 Low rate grades, low payroll 1/19/2018 5:39 AM

45 The district needs to focus more attention on encouraging and facilitating recognition for academicexcellence among high-achieving students, continue to improve community outreach, andimplement a comprehensive and detailed plan to dramatically increase parental involvement in thelife of the district.

1/18/2018 9:20 PM

46 Poor communication. Reaching out to community. Motivation of students and/or staff. 1/18/2018 8:58 PM

47 Complete breakdown of trust among employee groups, ineffective leadership 1/18/2018 8:10 PM

48 1. Dislike that the district focuses so much on students passing state required testing. Understandfederal and state funding is attached to students passing the tests. This places undue stress onstudents. Recent required tests included topics that had not been covered in class during thesemester. 2. Drug use and fights on campuses. 3. Large class sizes. 4. Not retaining highlyqualified teachers and long term classified staff. 5. Focus on academics before athletics. Studentsknow if your an athlete, you’re scheduled is academically lighter during the semester of your sportso you have a higher chance of remaining academically qualified.

1/18/2018 8:10 PM

49 Bringing the district and all of the different types and levels of employees together and buildingtrust among all employees. Tim Hamilton would be a great choice as superintendent because hehas all of these qualities and the district needs to move forward.

1/18/2018 4:51 PM

1/18/2018 2:09 PM

60 As # 10 above -- it offers both rewards and challenges 1/18/2018 7:07 AM

61 Board's inability to conduct itself transparently and in the best interest of the students/communitythey serve. Superintendent will need to be capable of standing their ground and advocating onbehalf of students and staff members.

1/17/2018 10:58 PM

62 Lack of highly qualified instruction. Lack of guidance for student post secondary success. Lack ofcommunity trust in administration

1/17/2018 9:55 PM

63 CGUHS needs a better principle that will take control and not discriminate to certain people. BothUnion and Vista need leaders that can take control of any situation without snapping makingstudents feel doubtful about themselves. Teachers often complain about their boss, whichconcerns me as a student.

76 Maintaining HIGHLY Qualified teaching staff Maintain Classified / Support staff. Imagine if you lostIvan to the elementary district or one of the local charter schools. Offer lower deductible medicalbenefits. If retirement falls under the state of Arizona, why doesn't all other benefits? Treat allstudents equal. Seems like those that play sports (especially football) are given a little easierschedule during their sport season in order to maintain eligibility to play their sport. Students talkand are very aware this is a practice. Academics are first, then sports / activities.

79 Common core and tuitoring resources for students. 1/17/2018 1:38 PM

80 Some significant issues the district is facing is spending money incorrectly, and having teachers"teach" something they know little to nothing about. There are some new televisions in thecafeteria but they're always off, which was a waste of money. That money could have gone toactual important things like after school programs or fine arts projects. Some teachers just seem tobe here for the money, they don't know what they're teaching at this school. I am one of the manystudents who can name off at least three teachers that do not know how to teacher or simply knowthe material.

1/17/2018 1:36 PM

81 This is easy. First, why has it taken the board so long to stand up to Goodsell and finally get rid ofhim? A large number of us saw signs from the start....and we spoke about it directly to the board. Ifyou want a good supt think in terms of the opposite of Goodsell. You want someone who isaccessible, humble, smart, and focused on kids. Part of the challenge will be to get the boardmembers to play nice. You all in service of the community. A little humility on your part goes a longway. For those of you who were staunch Goodsell supporters, acknowledge the damage he hasdone (not publicly, of course) and focus more on agreements and commonalities thandisagreements. No board is perfect and we don't expect everything to always be smooth but, if the5 of you are honest with yourselves, you haven't always been great examples to our kids. This ispartly because you allowed Goodsell to be a maniac but also because of the way you publicly andprivately spoke about each other. So, challenge #1 - board members let the past disagreementsgo and refocus. Challenge #2 - finding someone who wants the job for more than a paycheck.Look local. We have some experienced and qualified candidates in our community. We havepeople who have years of service and commitment to Casa Grande that would be wonderful in theposition. Be open to possibilities. The best superintendents I've ever known are the ones who aredeeply rooted and committed to the community. Beware of people (like the new elem district supt)who is just padding the resume until something else comes along.

84 the challenges here are doing the work and start talking to people in a group 1/17/2018 1:25 PM

85 1. organization 2. leadership 1/17/2018 1:25 PM

86 The most biggest issue is bus transportation, students buses get full and no room for otherstudents. Also another is the district checking on teachers and doing follow ups.

1/17/2018 1:25 PM

87 Giving students motivation' being patient with them, and sometimes teaching. 1/17/2018 1:24 PM

88 To have all students engage, from top to bottom, and be motivated. also, to be motivated to finishschool and not drop out. A lot of it, in my eyes, is due to lacking motivation.

1/17/2018 1:23 PM

89 Almost none of our students know who is in charge and the people in charge don't put themselvesout their.

1/17/2018 1:23 PM

90 Transportation and meeting with students to better the school. 1/17/2018 1:23 PM

91 I consider two most significant challenges facing the district to be listening, being professional, andbeing polite.

1/17/2018 1:22 PM

92 Unqualified leadership and not being concerned about their students at all. 1/17/2018 1:22 PM

93 the fact that our teachers don't actually teach us. the fact that we have teachers that are fromdifferent counties and don't speak English. So, its hard to understand them. also, the amount ofwork they give us when we have other classes and no time to do it. that needs to change.

1/17/2018 12:46 PM

94 Not communicating as much to the schools and feeling that they don't care of the students 1/17/2018 12:45 PM

97 a lot of the issues concerning the tech because after only a few months of use it starts wearing outwhich can come as a issue for most students because long loading times can interfere with a lot ofcomputer work along with the irresponsible students just goofing off.

104 They have issues balancing budgets, hiring and keeping good teachers. The good teacher havebecome so aggravated by the idiocy that they have quit. Teachers here are being hired with nopassion or skill.

1/17/2018 12:30 PM

105 some topics the teachers teach are hard to understand sometimes. 1/17/2018 12:30 PM

106 Maintenance, and seeing how each individual student learns 1/17/2018 12:27 PM

107 One challenge is being aware of discrimination, and also school polices and procedures. 1/17/2018 12:26 PM

108 From my knowledge, one issue is lack of ability to change and have an open mind aboutinnovating ideas that can better students' learning experience. Another issue is deciding wherefunds should be used. Should funds be used for technology purposes, classroom improvement, orfor athletic purposes ? Lastly the district should try to communicate with families and take intoconsideration students and parents voice.

116 The work load for the kids taking honors classes is excessive and unhealthy. Teachers using andrelying on technology for the wrong reasons (Our kids have been told, "We did not have time tocover this, so just watch a YouTube video on it."). Or when teachers forget to talk abouthomework/assignments in class and then just make assignments through the online technology(We have been on a campout where there was not cell service, then when we get back into town,a teacher had made an assignment due over the weekend.)

1/17/2018 11:31 AM

117 Stressful situations in classrooms and not motive the students to do school activities. 1/17/2018 11:28 AM

118 Teachers who are used to a classroom environment and student help when they are strugglingwith a specific teacher and need assistance in a class.

1/17/2018 11:26 AM

119 Only a couple issues happen with the with the district. 1. The security system is a need of a littlemore improvement, we need more of a disciplined and athletic environment of security andprotection. 2. Start a price fixing system where not many prices are too expensive for hardware orfood.

1/17/2018 11:23 AM

120 What I consider to be the most significant challenges or issues facing the district would be thatthey are not really considering the problems with the students or schools, for example how it isvery challenging to get into school, especially if you are driving, mainly because of how inefficientthe roads are with the entrance to the school. Another challenge or issue would be that the districtoften disapproves some of the ideas we have for our school, such as new clubs or an event thestudents would like to do.

1/17/2018 11:20 AM

121 the issues of this district is social media. Not enough people actually doing work. maybe usingmore classroom work and less homework

122 homework and teacher 1/17/2018 11:15 AM

123 I feel like we do not have very many clubs to join 1/17/2018 11:13 AM

124 Graduation rate and student performance. As one of the largest districts in the county, targetedintervention should identify why we are not affecting greater student success. Additionally, specificstudent groups, such as ESS/Sped/Gifted should be valued equally. At times, this feels as if it is achallenge and that attitudes exist from the top down that are contrary to what is said. The ESSdirector does a great job of promoting this agenda, but it needs to be districtwide. The majority ofthese students go on to become community members whose input we eventually seek.

1/17/2018 11:13 AM

125 The current board, under performing teachers 1/17/2018 11:12 AM

126 That sometimes teachers don't reach out to those who want to learn, and mainly focus on thosewho don't have a care in the world. Also some teachers can give pressure to the students whodon't really know much about a certain subject.

1/17/2018 11:05 AM

127 The top issue for this district is the teachers are not strict enough, and it's nice they let theirstudents mess up, however they let their students by with ignorant behavior and don't do anything.Another issue in the district is it seems like no one, not even the teachers are happy to be here.

148 The biggest issue facing the district are hiring and retaining highly qualified teachers. Hiringteachers with a lower education than teachers who have been frozen and the new teachers arestarted at a higher salary than the returning teachers. Another problem this district has faced ishaving a dictator as a superintendent who forces policy without any input from all stakeholders.

1/17/2018 9:24 AM

174 1) The board, especially where board members have a financial interest that conflicts with theinterest of the residents of the district (i.e., employed daughter in law or former teacher whomanipulated horizontal advancement). This is highlighted by the board's priorities which came tolight with the rejection of new curriculum which hurt the students. 2) Finding a qualifiedsuperintendent willing to come to a district embroiled in controversy which includes themistreatment of their current superintendent. 3) The Casa Grande Education Association havingan agenda that is not in the best interest of the residents of the district or the students.

182 The district has the ability to create a great partnership with CAVIT, but the schedule this yeardidn't seem to take those students into consideration at all with late start/early release scheduling. It almost appears that CGUHSD purposely tries to discourage students from participating in theprogram and that is a challenge when parents can go to a neighboring district, no matter how goodor bad, to be supported in their technical education. Discerning between "highly qualified" and"highly qualified and can teach students" teachers. In the over 8 years I have had children in theCGUHSD district I have seen "highly qualified" teachers not able to actually teach the students. Ihave seen these same students have a substitute either temporary or long term who wasn't highlyqualified, but was able to TEACH and help the students learn and understand the material.
