sWelcome Home!

We are so glad you are able to join us during this special weekend. We’ve planned many great programs and have provided opportunities for you to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones. Take a walk across campus, getting to know all of the new places since you were last here. Then, slip into Hughes and take a moment to reflect on those things that haven’t changed – a faithful Father whose pursuit is relentless and unending. For 125 years, through bumpy times and times of great celebration, God has used this place to change lives. What a privilege it is to welcome you back to Asbury University.

We have been praying for you, praying that you will find rest here. We have prayed for a renewed spirit, for peace and a

quiet joy. We recognize that for some, life hasn’t necessarily turned out the way you thought it might and for others, it’s better than you ever imagined. All of this we acknowledge, reveling in the fact that His mercies are new every day. Great is His faithfulness to us.

So, enjoy your time here. What started in 1890 as a small holiness college with one building, now stands strong 125 years later. This commitment in and of itself is worthy of a great celebration. Thank you for making the sacrifices necessary to join us this weekend. You are appreciated.

Lisa Falin ’90 Harper, Director of Alumni Relations

and a Th.M. at Asbury Theological Seminary (ATS), as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. in Mediterranean Studies at Brandeis University. When he was elected as Asbury’s 12th president, he was a well-respected

professor at ATS. He is also an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church and the author of 11 books, including “Where Are You God? A Study of Malachi,” “Exodus: The Way Out” and many scholarly articles.

While president, Oswalt worked to increase enrollment, instituted the Spiritual Life Coordinator staff position, approved a Freshman Studies Program and supported a new freshman recruitment program. During Oswalt’s presidency, the college added baseball and softball fields and a cross-country course.

David J. GyertsonPresident, 1993–2000

When Dr. David Gyertson became president, his experience in Christian higher education, in non-profit management and in public relations brought a wealth of knowledge and a breath of fresh air to the campus. During his presidency, Kinlaw Library was constructed and Gyertson was the driving force of the fundraising for the capital campaign that brought in gifts

to cover the nearly $16 million project. He installed new graduate studies and promoted equine and ROTC programs. Gyertson, who had previously served as an administrator at Asbury Theological Seminary, was also committed to forming closer ties between the college and seminary. Gyertson served as president of three universities — Regent University (1991-93), Asbury University (1993-2000) and Taylor University (2000-05).

Paul A. RaderPresident, 2000–2006

Dr. Paul Rader '56 had recently retired as General of The Salvation Army when he became president at Asbury. During his presidency, the Asbury Academy program for high school students was installed, as well as a graduate program in education and a degree-completion program.

Rader — who embodied the University's motto of academic excellence and spiritual vitality — emphasized the importance of campus diversity and recruited international and minority students. Rader also obtained a large grant from the Lilly Foundation. After he retired, he helped obtain a major gift from Army territories for a new communication arts building — the Andrew S. Miller Center for Communication Arts. Rader met his wife, Kay, at Asbury, where he graduated with a B.A. in English. Rader was elected General of The Salvation Army — the first American to hold this office — and served as its international leader from 1994-99.

William C. CrothersInterim President, 2006–2007 Dr. William Crothers served as president of Roberts Wesleyan College for 21 years before he came to Asbury. He also served as executive vice president for Bethel College and was the founder and managing partner of Presidential Leadership Associates. Crothers earned degrees from the University of Michigan-Flint, Western Michigan University and Michigan State University. In 2007, he was awarded an

honorary doctorate by Asbury University.

Crothers made improvements in the University’s budget and finances. During the 2006-07 school year, two equine programs and a master’s degree in social work were approved. Another education major through degree completion was made available, and a new worship arts program was created.

Crothers initiated multiple projects that improved the physical appearance of the campus during his year at Asbury.

In 1933, Asbury began the tradition of naming each incoming Freshman Class, starting with the Gray Wolves. This tradition is unique to our campus and continues to provide class identity for our students even today. In fact, you can see all of our classes, through 2010, displayed in the basement of Hughes and the Reasoner walkway. The current class pictures can be found outside of Hughes in the foyer

of Reasoner. Thanks to Alumni Board Member, Tim Mowery ’68, for designing this puzzle for us in order to celebrate our unique history. Solve away!Clues: Each class name is represented on the puzzle. There are a few names that are repeated, but they only appear one time in the puzzle. Class names are listed with a few clues to get you started.
