The Tactile Urbanism project presented me with the opportunity of working in a somewhat multidisciplinary setting along with the challenge of proposing a design solution that is feasible with the budget given through team work and collaboration. I found the design process helpful and informative in understanding how solutions are created in order to meet the client’s needs, in this case, the urban planner, whose goal was to communicate what a transit village is to the public.

Although we unexpectedly went over budget with our coasters due to bad timing and miscommunication, we are proud of our project. We countered this by thinking quickly, getting our coasters finished at ACME, and hand cutting them into squares instead of circles. We spent extra time out of class devising how to set things up, buying and borrowing the items, and designing the readable parts. Setting up the tree chandelier and cutting the coasters took the most of the installation time. Overall, we had a great team and we all gave our best efforts.

Working on the Tactile Urbanism project opened up my perspective on how design can communicate with others. When beginning this project I was a bit skeptical about how we would make an impact and help educate others, but I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The parameters given to my group enhanced our creative process tremendously. By limiting the timeframe, location, and budget, we had to think creatively while still using what we knew about design and our topic to come up with a clear and logical direction. Collaborating with other classmates, as well as an Urban Planning graduate student, helped me recognize the importance of collaborating and how each individual can bring their own unique element to the table. Without bouncing ideas off of my group members, I do not think we would have come up with our final (and in my opinion, best) solution. Overall, I think this project was successful and enjoyed the entire process.
