John Anzani, Midlothian Council
Over the last decade John has been providing the Voluntary sector in Mid-
lothian with free support with HR issues. He has been employed through-
out that time by Midlothian Council. The service is provided on a free of
charge basis. It continues to be led by the needs of the client organisation
with whom John is working and it is entirely confidential. John draws on
his day to day work in Midlothian as well as his previous work as a manager
and consultant throughout the UK. John keeps his knowledge up to date by
carrying out research and participating in a wide range of seminars.
Helen Forrester and Linda Cuthbert, Play Therapy Base
Helen has been practising as a Play Therapist since 1997, both in a free-
lance capacity and through employment within voluntary agencies. She has
developed and delivered trainings in therapeutic play for various settings
including for voluntary agencies, nursery schools, foster care agencies and
social work centres, and is a full member and accredited supervisor of The
British Association of Play Therapists. Linda is an accredited Play Thera-
pist who has specialised in working with hard to engage children, and who
have volatile and challenging behaviours.

tions, charity law, etc, as well as supporting the Voluntary Sector Forum
and the Voluntary Sector Children’s sub-group. She gathers and com-
municates a wide range of information aimed at, and about, the local volun-
tary sector. She has had a particular interest in deprivation statistics since
her previous job at Lothian Anti Poverty Alliance.

Our Trainers
Dr Simon Raybould, Aware Plus
Dr Simon Raybould, Director of Aware Plus, is an expert in communica-
tions. He’s also a professional lighting designer, specialising in work for
dance. Simon got into all of this after spending over 20 years as a re-
searcher; his PhD was into the patterns and causes of childhood
leukeamia but he subsequently branched out into a wide range of areas to
do with ‘health and lifestyle’, all with a geographical bent and using some
pretty snazzy statistical and mapping tools.
Craig Turner, Midlothian Voluntary Action
Craig has worked in the IT and web design fields for 10 years both as a
freelance web designer and technical consultant for a number of IT compa-
nies. He now works in the voluntary sector and focuses on digital commu-
nications – social media, websites and email bulletins. His combination of
technical knowledge, private sector experience and third sector awareness
puts him in a great position to advise charities around Midlothian on all of
their web related queries.
Margaret Wilson, Midlothian Voluntary Action
As well as being a trained teacher Margaret has over 35 years experience
in the voluntary sector both as a voluntary board member and as a devel-
opment officer supporting boards and staff to get their group working well
to achieve their objectives. Margaret has developed and delivered courses
for boards over a number of years, and has learned through experience
that people always know more than they think they do, they just need help
to recognise their skills.
Ian Wragg, Midlothian Council
Ian is the Information Security Officer with Midlothian Council. He has day
to day responsibility for protecting the Council’s IT systems and council
data from unauthorized access or loss. Having more than 14 years of infor-
mation security experience, this puts him in a great position to advise char-
ities around Midlothian on all of their security related queries.
Dr Lesley Kelly, Midlothian Voluntary Action
Lesley is MVA’s Deputy Manager, with responsibility for funding issues.
She has twenty years experience of helping organisations to secure and
manage external funding. Her input into the training programme is funded
by Midlothian Council’s Fairer Scotland Fund.

Play Therapy – a two part training
1. An introduction to play therapy
2. Using play therapy techniques to think about client difficulties
Play Therapy is an approach to supporting children’s emotional health and general development using play
and the relationship with the therapist as the main agents of change. Playing is the way in which children
think, learn, develop, and make sense of their experiences. Play Therapists work with vulnerable children
who may have experienced loss, trauma, abuse and neglect, or who are challenged by developmental is-
sues.
This will be a practical training introducing how play therapy works, and exploring play therapy techniques.
Participants are encouraged to have a case in mind they would like to explore. Confidentiality will be main-
tained and participants will have the chance to think about their clients anonymously in small groups and
pairs through guided play therapy techniques.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants should:
Understand what play therapy is and how it is used with children
Know when play therapy may be a useful intervention for a child / family
Have explored difficulties observed in clients
Have experienced some playful support techniques

are discussed.

taking minutes. People who would like to refresh their knowledge are welcome to come along too.
By the end of the course delegates will have covered the following:
The purpose of minute taking; Different styles that can be used – how to decide what suits your group best;

Support, Supervision and Appraisal
It is well documented that staff work better if they get focused and constructive feedback. Unfortunately mak-
ing sure that you give this to staff is sometimes easier said than done. Too often people’s efforts fall between
two stools. Either they get caught up in an overly bureaucratic nightmare of forms and endless meetings or
they think that their half-murmured asides will suffice. Another pitfall is confusing Support and Supervision
and carrying out a mishmash that provides neither.
The aim of this session is to look at the various models and procedures that are used in different organisa-
tions to allow you to choose what would be most suitable for you. The differences between Support, Supervi-
sion and Appraisal will be explained and demonstrated. The ways in which they fit together and how one can
develop out of the others will be explored with emphasis on how to use them practically.
At the end of the day you should have a clear idea of how you intend to proceed and some confidence that
you will achieve it.
By the end of the course participants should:
gain knowledge of the differences between Support, Supervision & Appraisal
know how to use different processes to gain the best outcome for the organisation and the individual
be able to construct an effective Appraisal system where this is a relevant process for their organisa-
tion and the staff who work in it
feel more confident about their practical skills in these areas
understand best practice on appraisal processes & administration

Presentation skills
You might like presentations; you might loathe presentations; but either way you have to deliver presenta-
tions - and most people hate doing that even more than their audience hate listening to them!”
Presenting information is a constant feature of all organisations. We all do it in a variety of contexts:
one-to-one discussions with colleagues, customers and clients – often without being aware that we
are using communication style and techniques
team meetings
increasingly via teleconferencing or video
explaining what we do to the public, funders or potential supporters
even presentations to staff on social occasions can influence how we are seen by those around us.
It’s important therefore that we communicate to the best of our ability. Awareness of a few simple techniques
can make a huge difference to how we are seen and treated. They can make the difference between being
funded or not being funded.
A whole range of factors might influence your presentation such as:
voice projection
dealing with nerves
posture
handling questions
structuring presentations to be memorable
designing slides for impact and effectiveness
sounding confident and looking authoritative.
If you want to communicate more effectively then this short, fun training event is for you.

Recruitment and Selection
It is now well established that an organisation’s people resources are key to achieving improved organisation-
al performance. The recruitment of employees is fundamental to the functioning of an organisation and there
are compelling reasons for getting it right. An inability to recruit and retain the right people with the right skills
at the right time will reduce organisational effectiveness.
If the overall costs of leaving are considered, including payroll and administration, recruitment and selection
time and fees, induction, training, unproductive time and any indirect loss of business or customer satisfac-
tion are taken into account; the estimated cost per leaver can be the equivalent of 6 months salary or more
for managers and professionals. The non financial costs to service users can also be significant as those in
need of e.g. social care have to form a new relationship and build trust with a new carer/support worker.
This workshop is designed to support you in developing your HR skills in relation to the recruitment and se-
lection of staff.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants should:

Resolving Workplace Disputes
In any organisation* where people are gathered there will be differences of opinion [*well maybe not in Cults but they are not healthy places to be and certainly not role models for the voluntary sector]. This is natural
and not to be feared. Often the best projects and/or service improvement arise from creative tensions.
Sometimes those differences can become disputes which in of themselves are not terrible. However, most of us will have at least one example where a workplace [and often, but not exclusively, work based] dispute has caused enormous problems both for the organisation and the people who work there. Usually this is because
the way in which the dispute has been handled has been flawed.
The aim of this course is to give participants knowledge and techniques so that they are able to approach
disputes with a clear process for seeking to resolve them
The content of the workshop will draw on Academic research and the latest guidance from Acas.
By the end of the course, participants will have:
Awareness of their own behaviour drivers and triggers and how they impact on the situation;
Appreciate how re-framing and mediation/negotiation skills can assist when resolving disputes
The knowledge and confidence to utilise the tools and techniques provided to deal effectively with
difficult disputes

Writing a Risk Register
Risk management involves you, the employer, looking at the risks that arise in the workplace and then putting sensible health and safety measures in place to control them. A risk register is a tool commonly used in pro-
ject planning and organisational risk assessments.
This interactive session will look at the Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Five Steps to Risk Assessment’ and consider the best way to record these risks. It will look at different examples of risk register templates, and
consider the issues that are specific to the voluntary sector and its client groups.
By the end of the session participants will have the basis of a Risk Register for their own organisation.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session participants will:
Understand what we mean by risk assessment;
Be familiar with the HSE’s Five Steps to Risk Assessment;
Be aware of the range of risk register templates available;
Have an awareness of the key issues facing the voluntary sector when undertaking risk assessment.
Who should attend?
Managers and key staff.
