Coordinator SpotlightDelmar’s Own—Donna Nesbitt

Delmar Senior High School’s Donna Nesbitt grew up in the Hebron, Mary-land area. She spent her summers on both of her grandparents’ farms. One

farm raised chickens, small grains and hay crops, while the other raised and trained horses for the harness rac-ing industry. These early experiences had a strong influence on the career choices she made as a young adult. It should come as no sur-

prise that Donna earned a BS in Agri-culture Education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She paid for most of the costs associated with her college education by working as an entomologist at the Lower Eastern Shore Research and Education Center for 5 summers. This experience pro-vides yet another layer of related skills that Donna brings to her classroom.

Her first teaching job was at South Hagerstown High School, in Hager-stown, Maryland. There she taught a variety of Ag courses during her first two years after graduation. She joined the staff at Delmar Middle and Senior High School in July of 2001, and in 2002, Donna married her high school sweetheart. She and her husband now have 2 children and manage a herd of Angus cattle. Donna became the Tech Prep Coor-dinator at Delmar in 2010. She sees great value in the Tech Prep program. Delmar Senior High School has a num-ber of graduates that have utilized their Tech Prep credits at Delaware State University and the University of Del-aware. Donna and the rest of the CTE teachers at Delmar do a great job of making sure their students understand how to take advantage of the Tech Prep opportunities available to them. Con-gratulations on a job well done!

Tech Prep Delaware partnered with the Department of Education to sponsor an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED Workshop on January 30, 2015 at the Collette Center. A total of 27 Family and Consumer Sciences teachers from across the state attended this full day event. This 6 hour training session was designed to teach the knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to recognize emer-gencies and give first aid. The first aid section covered general principles, medical emergencies, injuries, and environmental emergencies. The CPR section covered adult, child and infant CPR and choking. The AED portion covered the theory and operation of the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator. Participants were then required to pass a skills evaluation. A course completion card was issued for this course with a re-certification period every two years.
