The two f lagship ac t iv i t ies star ted th is year have been the week ly

Exerc ise Group and the Going out Group both of which have

proved very popular and del ivered some excel lent outcomes

around increases in heal th , f i tness, conf idence, and wel lbe ing

a longs ide decreases in iso la t ion and lonel iness.

The Exerc ise group star ted as a s imple t ime l imi ted jo int work ing

in i t ia t ive wi th the loca l author i ty but i t soon became apparent

there was enthus iasm and appet i te for a cont inu ing week ly s lo t .

The pro ject appl ied for and received a smal l grant f rom the Local

Author i ty to purchase some sports equipment, the core TOYL

pro ject funded a tutor and the room - the event rap id ly became so

popular that we had to sp l i t in to two d is t inct sess ions cover ing the

whole of Thursday morn ings. Part ic ipants have achieved individual

goals around weight loss , increase in mobi l i ty and overa l l f i tness -

ind i rect feedback f rom GP's f rom ind ividuals has been very good.

The Going out group involves the organis ing and running of t r ips

and out ings to dest inat ions proposed by pro ject part ic ipants. Th is

has inc luded t r ips to the theat re, v is i ts to s ta te ly homes and

gardens, walks and vis i ts to the coast . We have worked to make

the offer as inc lus ive as poss ib le and par t ic ipants have taken part

wi th a range of d isabi l i t ies and ind ividual d iagnos is these have

inc luded mobi l i ty issues, menta l heal th issues, aut ism, visual

impai rment , breath ing and conf idence issues. An ind ividual cost is

ca lcu lated to inc lude t ranspor t and any entry fees th is is then

shared between the part ic ipants .

Work wi th the longterm heal th condi t ions networks has cont inued

and th is year we have helped a number of these groups inc lud ing

Park inson 's, Breath Easy and Our own Carers Group fund ra ise

e i ther by he lp ing them source smal l grants or enabl ing them to

fund ra ise at events the TOYL pro ject has fac i l i tated for example

an Alzheimer 's Day event . Th is smal l funding has al lowed them to

run t r ips out or to br ing in speakers etc .

Some unexpected outcomes have come from activities for example two ladies who

met at activities have become friends and then decided to go on a UK holiday

together, at the travel agents the cost was high and comment was made that they

could go on a cruise for the same price... so they did - Sending us pictures from the

Scandinavian fiord's!

Individuals at the exercise group and other activities have been able to achieve

medical targets set by their doctor or consultant by attending our activities - this has

included weight loss, help with recovery from strokes, mobility targets and increases

in core fitness.

From day one monitoring and evaluation has been a key aspect in enabling us to

deliver the project outcomes - this ongoing process enables us to spot trends and

gaps and work towards meeting these, for example feedback from both the going out

group and exercise group has led to the development of a spin off walking group.

We have worked to expand the offer to some 'difficult to reach' groups and have

empowered individuals with autism, brain injuries, mental health problems and visual

impairment to access mainstream activities. One individual in his mid eighties and

with a sight impairment was assisted to meet a personal goal of climbing the 199

steps to Whitby Abbey. A couple felt able to share with us that neither had been out

of the town or travelled on public transport for many years - one had never been on a

bus till they came to our activities their self esteem and confidence has grown

expediently of the past few months.

199 Steps

The value of our activities has been picked up on by other organizations for example

a training provider has referred Volunteers to us and work and experience with our

Computer Group has led to 3 of our volunteers moving on into employment, one

winning an apprenticeship.

Out approach in project delivery has been open and fluid enabling us to respond

quickly to the changing needs of our beneficiaries this will not be altering
