When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock. It seems that these instinctual characteristics of geese dont always come so naturally for human beings. Maybe a key to faithful living is to recognize we are not made to go it alone, but need to take a lesson or two from geese to live meaningful, healthy, and good lives. Pastor Scott

Take a Lesson

Several days after the experience, I am still awed by it … the

sight of geese, geese, and more geese flying directly overhead as I

walked to church in the quiet of a Sunday morning, as the sun made its

way over the eastern horizon to begin the day. I’ve seen a lot of geese

throughout my life, but this was by far the largest number.

They were following their built in navigation system, on their

way to their next rest stop along the flyway on their way north. That’s

the big picture of their migration. Wired and equipped to migrate south

for the winter and north for the summer. If that is not amazing enough,

what I witnessed were the rhythm of movements wave after wave of

birds made as the wind shifted, and their formation adapted. I was

privileged to seek a complex, yet elegant dance in flight. I was

reminded, once again, of a go-to article written in 1972 by Dr. Robert

McNeish titled Lessons from Geese.

As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies to the point position.

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

It seems that these instinctual characteristics of geese don’t always come so naturally for human beings. Maybe a key to faithful living is to recognize we are not made to “go it alone,” but need to take a lesson or two from geese to live meaningful, healthy, and good lives. – Pastor Scott

Financial Report

Thank you so much for your donation to The Source. Without your help we couldn’t do what we do! We appreciate your generosity.

~ The Source Staff

FUMC family,

1 Corinthians 12:27 tells us “...you are the body…”. Thank you for being the body of Christ through your words of encouragement, prayers, and donations to help me establish my own residence in the community. It was with your help that this was possible. I am so blessed to be surrounded by Christ’s embodiment. Thank you again!

In His name,

Jess Zielinski

The family of Bob Crouse, Vanessa Parson’s grandfather) thank you so much for the lovely red prayer shawl. It’s getting good “use”!

Dear FUMC, Thank you so much for your recent donation to the Children and Family Center. Your support helps us provide services and resources to our clients on a daily basis. We are so grateful for your generosity! Sincerely, Linde Mattson, Executive Director

Financial Report – Operating Fund Balance Is Improving

Operating Fund … AKA Church Ministry Fund

January Contributions from pledges & offerings: $36,618

January Expenses: $32,889

In addition to the pledges and offerings noted above which were

received in the Operating Fund, some members took the opportunity to

contribute to the Close the Gap. This represents giving which is being

matched at the rate of 1:4. The giving to that fund (including the

matching funds) through February 15th totals $17,750. In other words,

not only did our “regular” giving cover expenses in January, but this

additional $17,750 was deposited, thus reducing the deficit by a

considerable amount. Gifts to Close the Gap

up to $65,800 will continue to be matched at

the 1:4 rate. If you wish to know how to be

a part of this effort, please contact the

church office, Pastor Scott, or Financial

Steward Bob Cooper.

Follow-up Capital Campaign Plans

Preparations are well underway for a follow-up capital campaign to the very successful three-year campaign which ends in April 2017. The original campaign paid for over one-half of the expense of building the addition and renovating the education building. This follow-up campaign aims to pay off the remaining debt. Watch for more details as the plans unfold.

Note from Arden Ratcliff-Mann, presenter for the UMW Spring District Meeting

Hello United Methodist Women! I am so excited to join you at your next meeting to discuss how the spiritual

discipline of Bible journaling has changed my life and shaped my faith. First, I wanted to tell you a little

about me. I’m originally from Franklin, TN, and I earned a Master’s of Divinity degree from Candler School

of Theology in 2012. My husband and I moved to Missouri last February, and I currently serve as the

Director of Children’s Ministries at Liberty UMC. I will be going before the Board of Ordained Ministry this

spring to be approved for commissioning as a deacon in the Missouri Conference.

I discovered Bible journaling after going through a period in my life where I

struggled to connect with God. After I graduated from seminary, I moved across

the country to start my first full-time job in ministry as a children’s and youth

minister. But over time, I became so busy teaching Sunday School and leading

youth group and planning worship that I began to neglect my own spiritual life. I

allowed nurturing my personal relationship with God to fall to the bottom of my

to do list. Many weeks, the only Scripture I read was the text for that Sunday’s

worship service or children’s lesson. I suspect this can be a problem for anyone

who’s ever served in a leadership role at church - sometimes you get so caught up

in the logistics of preparing and leading a Bible study that you forget to actually

study the Bible yourself.

I was in denial about the situation for far too long. I would lie to myself, “Oh, teaching

this children’s Sunday School class is just as good as reading a devotional.” I continued

to starve myself spiritually while telling myself that I was full. Then one day, I came

across an article on the internet about Bible journaling. Intrigued, I clicked on it. I

learned that women had started taking Bibles with wide margins and drawing in them -

using paints and crayons and stamps to illustrate their faith. And I heard a small voice

inside of me - maybe even the voice of God Himself - whisper, “You could do that.” I

still had some Christmas money saved up, so I ordered a journaling Bible and never

looked back.

Within a few weeks of creatively responding to God’s Word, I could already see the difference in my life.

After a long spiritual winter, I felt like I was finally emerging into spring. Bible journaling completely

changed my relationship with God. It awakened me to a new season of spiritual growth and devotion.

I am so excited to meet you all at your next meeting and share more details about Bible journaling. I’ll share

several options for how you can creatively respond to the Word of God, through artistic expression or written

journaling in a Bible or a separate notebook. I’ll show you lots of examples of the different ways people

journal their faith, and we’ll also discuss how to start a Bible journaling group at your church. At the end of

my presentation, you’ll have time to break out the art supplies and give illustrating your faith a try!

This spiritual discipline isn’t going to be a meaningful practice for everyone, but if you’re interested in

connecting with the Bible in a new way it might be for you.

Blessings,

Arden Ratcliff-Mann

The challenges of living with memory loss can sever social connections at a

time when it is needed most. Memory and Alzheimer’s Café gatherings are one

way people with memory loss, and their care partners, can come together to

make new friendships and support one another. This monthly networking

setting is recommended for individuals with early to moderate memory loss

(e.g. Alzheimer’s, dementia or brain injury) as well as others who worry about

memory problems. Our mission is to provide a safe, comfortable, engaging

environment where people with memory loss, and their care partners, can laugh,

learn and remain socially engaged with others travelling the same journey.

Reservations welcome, but not required. To register or for more information,
