How to use Which language do we speak

this brochure? in our region?

This official brochure presents the tourist attractions in our region by theme: Wine & Local Produce, Nature, Culture and also all the practical information which will be useful for your stay (map, transport, offers, events etc). To make it easier, here are a few tips:

Each theme is distinguished by different coloured text (page 1).

The main attractions have been marked with 1 a number, which you’ll find on the map on page 88 and the following pages.

A key (page 91) listing different subjects in alphabetic order.

If you are calling from abroad, you need to use the country code +41 for Switzerland, followed by the number shown in this brochure minus the first 0.

Pictograms

Switzerland has the distictive characteristic of ha-ving 4 official languages which are, in order: German, French, Italian and Romansch. Yet in our region, you are located right on the linguistic border (marked by the Raspille, a little stream between Sierre and Salgesch) between the French (west) and German (east) speaking areas. So don’t be surprised to find that several places have two names. For example, Sierre is called Siders in German while Salgesch is known as Salquenen in French.

Despite this linguistic divide, you shouldn’t however have any communication problems as a great num-ber of inhabitants are capable of speaking several languages. However, in case you need it, this short vocabulary provides you with a few basics.

You are us!

We set off. We observe. We discover. Beauty is there. Naturally, it’s going to unfold as promised, but not necessarily where you were expecting it, where this brochure is supposed to guide you. “Let’s see”, as we say.

In our region, we uncover it whilst taking a short cut, by pushing open the door to what looks like a secret vault, or in the nooks and crannies of a mysterious forest like Finges. There. Just there. So, you sit down, in the middle of the vineyards, on the wine path, on a dry stone wall warmed by the ever-present sun. You take your time. You look at the countryside, the same that once inspired the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. You savour divine nectar, a symbol of our region, proclaimed «Swiss wine capital». You relish a dish from our unique local area. It is something to take pride in, like so many other things here. You forget yourself. Because yes, to love our region, you have to be able (and know how) to forget yourself.

So if we can, one way or another, encourage you to “lose yourself”, we will have got our message across. Because no, the essential isn’t there, and words can’t replace the experience. It’s up to you to write the story of your visit. As for the “you” used so much in this text… you are us!

Lost or not, if you need help in this quest, we are there for you, 7 days a week, whatever the season. Welcome.

Director of Sierre, Salgesch and Vicinities Tourist Office

a way of life Wine,

With 804 ha of vines divided into 9,897 plots belon-ging to 82 cellars, the Sierre, Salgesch and Vicinities region is a leader in wine production in Switzerland.

Far from a simple tourist attraction, wine is a way of life, a daily pleasure. Logically, and over time, Sierre has developed numerous attratctions related to wine. “Cultural” at the museum, “educational” on the Wine Path, wine becomes “pleasure” in cellars, wine shops and cafés/restaurants.

When wine tasting, you’ll be amazed by the diversity of our vines (over 50 in Valais) with names as evocative as they are mysterious: for white, Petite Arvine, Fendant, Amigne, Ermitage or Païen and for red, Humagne rouge, Cornalin, Gamay, Pinot Noir or Syrah.

Sierre, Swiss wine capital

The Sierre region, a symbol of this lea-dership, has benefitted from the activities of the “VINEA” association for 17 years. As well as organising the event of the same name, (page 33), it also manages several contests such as the “Mondial du Pinot noir», the “Mondial du Merlot” and the “Grand Prix du Vin Suisse”. “VINEA”, a real centre of skill and communication, also coordinates the biannual “Guide to Swiss wine” (page 28), on sale at the Tourist Office.

Another argument: the ‘appellation d’ori-gine contrôlée’ from the “Coteaux de Sierre” is the largest in Switzerland.

Salgesch, home of the “Grand Cru”

Another key element of our region, the commune of Salgesch was the first in Valais to establish the requirements for a “Grand Cru” label. Since 1988, its “Pinot noir Grand Cru” is subject to limited yields (800 g/m2) and to strict vinification rules (chaptalization, vinification and aging in barrels are forbidden).

The Valais Wine Château de Villa

and Vine Museum Wine Shop

Valais has been a wine-growing area for thou-sands of years, it stands out for the quality and diversity of its wine. The “The Valais Wine and Vine Museum” retraces the history of this ex-ceptional mountain vi-ticulture, nourished by tradition and passion. The museum is split into two: the “Wine Area” at the Château de Villa in Sierre and the “Vine Area” in the Maison Zumofen in

Salgesch. A superb path links the two sites through the vines (page 22).

In traditional, cosy surroundings, the “Château de Villa” Wine Shop presents over 600 vintages, a complete panorama of the Valais.

products

Traditionally-made beer

Founded in 1997, the traditional bre-wery “La Sierrvoise” has managed to develop a beer full of character which comes in a variety of types: lager, white, brown ale, dark… All develop their own flavour, an absolute must to try.

Rye bread

The characteristics of AOC Valaisan rye bread, apart from its ancestral recipe, include the use of special leaven which lengthens the period that the bread remains fresh, giving it a unique acidity. Cracked to perfection because of its long fermentation, it can be savoured with butter and honey as well as with a plate of Valais dried meats.

Dried meat

“IGP Valais dried meat” is a dried, never smoked, product. Coated with a mixture of selected spices (unique to each producer!), the pieces of meat (legs of beef) are left to braise and dry for five to sixteen weeks. They are then pressed several times and they take on their characteristic shape. Accompanied by a glass of Cornalin or Pinot Noir, the meat releases its flavour.

Cheese

Cheese, made in the dairies in Valais villages, are entrusted to specialists to refine them. These true professionals are heirs in the history of cheesema-king, they continue to produce cheese whose quality cannot be matched. Each cheese belongs to a well-defined area, because its name (Anniviers, Bagnes or Simplon – to name but a few!) is carved on the rind.

Plants

The Masserey family from Venthône, official sup-pliers for the famous “Ricola” sweets and “Bio Alp Tea”, farm ~50’000 m2 of land, growing 35 different species of plants.

Chocolate

Divine, sensual, profound, sumptuous, power-ful, dense, seductive, suggestive, excessive, silky, sweet, luxurious, heavenly. There are no lack of words to describe the delight of chocolate tasting. This magical moment when time stands still, where your senses are stirred and demand more. More and more.

Rainer Maria Rilke
