Tourism regions include Experience Perth, Australia’s Coral Coast, Australia’s South West, Australia’s Golden Outback and Australia’s North West.

The Experience Perth region, including the capital city of Perth, offers an easy-going, natural lifestyle surrounded by the beautiful Swan River, Kings Park and Botanic Gardens and the Indian Ocean.

From the city, head to the South West for world class food and wine, beautiful beaches, luxury accommodation and forests of tall trees.

The Golden Outback is where you’ll find historic townships, scenes of spectacular desert wilderness, outback characters, gold rush history, and the beaches of the Southern Ocean. experience Perth

Visitors to Western Australia’s capital city, Perth often remark on the friendly, laidback environment that welcomes them.

Perth is the only capital city in Australia where you can choose to either explore a world-class wine region, picnic in one of Australia’s oldest conservation areas or watch the sun set over the ocean, all within 30 minutes from the city. And with more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia, which ever activity you choose, chances are that there will be a blue sky overhead. It’s no wonder Perth has been voted as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

A visit to the world’s largest inner city park, Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, is a must for any visitor to Perth. Enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants or cafes, or pack a picnic and enjoy the breath-taking views over the city skyline and Swan River. The new Indigenous tour of the park provides a fascinating insight into life before European settlement.

The beach plays an important role in Perth’s culture and with 19 in the metropolitan area to choose from, it’s easy to find your own slice of white sand to soak up the sun. Try surfing at Scarborough Beach, or simply relax and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from Cottesloe Beach.

While you’re in Perth you can also get your fill of culture. The Art Gallery of Western Australia features a permanent collection of some of Australia’s most famous artists. Their Indigenous art collection is one of the best in the world.

The quaint holiday island of Rottnest is just a short ferry ride from Perth, Fremantle or Hillary’s Boat Harbour. Here, you can snorkel over shipwrecks, spot quokkas – the island’s unique and friendly marsupial, relax on the beach, or throw in a fishing line. There are no cars on Rottnest so pedal power is king.

A little further south of Perth, you can swim with dolphins in the ocean at Rockingham or take a cruise and watch them play in Mandurah’s waters.

A visit to Western Australia’s oldest wine region, the Swan Valley, is a must for food and wine lovers. Spend the day visiting the many restaurants, wineries and microbreweries to sample the quality local produce.

Need some nightlife? You’ll find Perth has a lively and original music and arts scene. Northbridge, Leederville, Subiaco, Mt Lawley and Fremantle are full of bars and restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Fremantle is considered the best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape in the world, with its world-famous heritage buildings and a fascinating maritime and convict history. Soak up the laidback ambience, chill-out in a street café, enjoy fish and chips fresh off the boat at the Fishing Boat Harbour; or a cleansing pale-ale at an award winning microbrewery.

Situated north of Perth, the Indian Ocean of Australia’s Coral Coast is teeming with a myriad of colourful marine life including humpback whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and schools of colourful tropical fish.

On your way north be sure to stop at the Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles, regarded as one of Australia’s most unique landscapes. You can walk amongst these incredible limestone spires that rise eerily out of the sand, some several metres tall. It’s the only place in Australia like it.

Head further north to Ningaloo Reef or Exmouth to become one of the lucky few who can say they’ve swum alongside the biggest fish in the world – the mighty whale sharks. Whale sharks pass by the coral coast each year from April to July following the mass spawning of coral in the area.

Easily accessible from shore, Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing reef in the world and one of the most the biodiverse. Its unique attributes have attracted national and world-wide attention including a recent nomination for World Heritage listing.

The Ningaloo coast is one of the few regions in the world where whale sharks congregate regularly and is widely considered to be one of the best places to swim with them.

Visitors can swim with these harmless gentle giants by joining one of the specialist whale shark tour boats that operate out of the small coastal towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay.

There’s also the chance to swim with graceful manta rays, or snorkel over the reef which is only a few metres from shore. No overcrowded pontoons here – it’s just you, a mask and fins, and the most awe inspiring marine life you’re ever likely to see. Pristine waters make visibility excellent and WA’s warm weather means you hardly ever need a wetsuit.

Dolphins are found along the coast and there are many opportunities to interact with these inquisitive creatures – feed them at Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay World Heritage area or watch them at play.

You’ll also find an array of interesting and enjoyable marine activities along the coastline. Explore deserted islands of the Dampier Archipelago and the Abrolhos Islands or chase some waves off Kalbarri and Geraldton.

Inland, the wildflowers on display in between July and November, the wildflower season rivals the coral for colour and is one of the State’s best loved natural attractions.

australia’s golden outback

Top (left to right): Driving on an outback road. Mount Augustus. Large image: Kangaroos at the beach, Esperance.

For history, heritage and high adventure, head to the Gold Rush country of the 1890s.

Western Australia produces 75 per cent of the country’s gold and has approximately two thirds of Australia’s gold resources. In Kalgoorlie, the site of one of Australia’s biggest gold rushes, you can visit the biggest open-pit gold mine in Australia and Australia’s only Mining Hall of Fame.

Kalgoorlie remains Western Australia’s largest goldfields town and is famed for its fascinating gold rush history, fabulous old buildings and old gold miners’ ghost towns. Here you can take a step back in time and pan for gold, take a tour of the Super Pit Mine and mix with the colourful characters at the many pubs, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants that line vibrant Hannan Street.

While you’re in the Golden Outback, check out world-famous sculptor Antony Gormley’s life size figures contemplating the salt flats of Lake Ballard near Menzies. Wildflowers flourish here too. During the wildflower season, the region is covered in an artist’s palette of colour.

And to see Australia’s whitest beach, bush and bunking down under the stars, head south to Esperance – a place so relaxed even the kangaroos sun bake on the beach.

The authentic way to see the real outback is by four wheel drive. And if you want to meet some locals as well as wildlife, make sure you stay at a pub, farm or station along the way.

australia’s south west

Top (left to right): Surf’s up at Injidup Beach, near Yallingup. wine tasting, South West Region. Bottom: Boranup Forest, Margaret River Wine Region.

Named one of the world’s Top 10 Regions in Lonely Planet’s BEST IN TRAVEL 2010, The South West of WA is famous for its internationally renowned forests, beaches and wineries.

The Margaret River Wine Region is the only wine region in Australia where you can experience stunning beaches, tall-timber forests, premium wineries, world-class surfing and caves all in the one place. The Margaret River Wine Region is one of the largest and most diverse wine regions in Australia.

For generations, the warm climate and ideal soil conditions have drawn winemakers from around the globe. Now, Western Australia’s wineries are recognised as some of the best in the world – while still maintaining a warm and personal approach.

While Margaret River is one of Western Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, nearby towns of Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup in the Margaret River Wine Region and Pemberton, Denmark and

Albany further south also attract their fair share of local and international visitors alike.

Once you’ve found your favourite wine, it’s tempting to pick up a supply of local cheeses, chocolates and ice cream, and cocoon yourself at a luxury retreat. Indulgent spa treatments, gourmet food and your favourite person = the perfect escape.

There are also some amazing natural attractions to discover ‘down south’ as the locals call it. Wild surf beaches alternate with secluded bays. You can paddle down peaceful rivers or search for whales at sea. Tall tree forests, underground caves and dramatic sea cliffs make a visit to this region truly unique.

And when it comes time to rest, accommodation ranges from rustic wood cabins in the middle of the forest, to five star luxury resorts. Like the wine, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste and budget.

australia’s north westThe North West of the State is a vast wilderness area waiting to be explored.

Located near Tom Price in the Pilbara region, The Karijini National Park is a must see. Home to some of the oldest rock formations in the world, dating back two billion years, Karijini is one of Australia’s largest and most spectacular national parks featuring dramatic gorges and waterfalls, which are easily accessible. For an indigenous perspective on the area, stop by the Interpretive Centre as you enter the park.

The Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia’s north is one of the richest sites in the world for prehistoric rock engravings, with more than 10,000 Aboriginal engravings in more than 500 recorded sites, dating back 30,000 years. View some of the rock art on The Jaburara Heritage Trail, near the coastal town of Karratha. A 3.5 kilometre (2.2 mile) walk, the trail provides a fascinating insight into the traditional inhabitants of WA’s West Pilbara Coast, the Jaburara people.

The spectacular Kimberley region was recently announced as one of a handful of Australian regions to be included in Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes Program and will feature prominently within Australia’s future international tourism marketing. The Kimberley is Western Australia’s first region in the National Landscapes Program which highlights iconic destinations across Australia.

As you explore the Kimberley it’s easy to believe you’re the first person to ever visit the area -

that is until you stumble across ancient rock art. The Bradshaw paintings, or Gwion Gwion, near the Gibb River Road are thought to date back to the last ice age.

Perhaps the oldest ‘artwork’ is the Bungle Bungle Range in World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park. Mother Nature spent 20 million years eroding these huge orange and black ‘beehives’ into a state of perfection.

The Kimberley coastline is equally breathtaking. With 22 kilometres of white sand, kissed by warm, crystal waters, Cable Beach, Broome is justifiably world famous.

A luxury cruise is a great way to explore the Kimberley coast, rivers and gorges. Make sure you include the Buccaneer Archipelago on your itinerary. The fishing is amazing, and the Horizontal Waterfall spectacular.

Created by the large tidal movement of the Kimberley, the Horizontal Waterfalls is the only place in the world this can be found. Get up close by taking a boat ride through the falls.

Whether you choose to travel by four wheel drive, charter plane or luxury cruiser, this ancient landscape will leave you feeling both inspired and humbled.

The epic landscapes of the Kimberley region were made world famous in 2008 as one of the stars of Baz Luhrmann’s movie, Australia.

natureNaturebanktoboostWA’s nature-basedtourismexperiences

Western Australia is poised to become home to some of the world’s most unique tourism experiences thanks to a new State Government program.

Launched in late 2009, Naturebank will see the release of land for low impact accommodation, mostly within national parks and reserves - providing a boost for tourism, indigenous investment, employment and capacity building - while offering eco-friendly, sustainable accommodation and nature-based tourism experiences.

The program will pave the way for world-class accommodation facilities and activities in the heart of Western Australia’s national parks - some of the most stunning and extraordinary attractions in the world.

Naturebank’s new developments will take employment and enterprise opportunities to remote parts of the State and give our tourism industry a significant boost.

The first site identified is at Kurrajong (within the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park), with the intention being that Naturebank will be an ongoing program with new localities and sites added as they are identified. www.tourism.wa.gov.au

WesternAustralia’s eco-modationboom

With 12,000 kilometres of pristine coastline and so many unique natural landscapes and ecosystems, it’s no wonder that many tourism operators are introducing sustainable principles to ensure Western Australia’s (WA’s) precious assets are protected.

In addition to the State Government’s new Naturebank initiative, Western Australia has seen the introduction of many sustainable and eco friendly tourism products in all corners of the State in recent times.

Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat (www.ecobeach.com.au) is an eco resort set in a pristine and untouched landscape, just one hour’s drive south of Broome in WA’s North West.

The retreat offers guests a perfect piece of Kimberley beach and bush, with the comfort and service of a resort. Accommodation is provided through a variety

of beautifully appointed, self-sustaining Eco Villas and luxurious safari-style Eco Tents.

Eco Beach’s eco credentials certainly stack up. The Eco Villas are solar powered with excess power diverted into the retreat’s grid and used where needed. Fitted with the latest in energy monitoring systems, the villas allow guests to adjust their individual energy consumption throughout their stay. Their design also captures the best of the afternoon breezes encouraging minimal use of air conditioning.

Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef (www.salsalis.com.au) is another property demonstrating a commitment to eco tourism by ensuring that guests leave a minimal environmental footprint. Sal Salis is an exclusive safari camp hidden in the white sand dunes of Western Australia’s Cape Range National Park.

The spacious wilderness tents are just metres from the water’s edge and the world’s greatest fringing coastal coral reef. Sal Salis accommodation and hosting style exudes an atmosphere of wild bush luxury and Sal Salis guides deliver an extraordinary insight to one of Australia’s best kept natural secrets – Ningaloo Reef.

The eco-certified Karijini Eco Retreat (www.karijiniecoretreat.com.au) was one of Western Australia’s first high end eco tourism properties, offering guests a truly unique experience in the breath-taking setting of the Karijini National Park.

The accommodation facility is 100% owned by the local Gumala Aboriginal Corporation (www.gumala.com.au) which in turn represents the collective interests of the three Aboriginal language groups Niapiali, Bunjima and Innawonga of the Pilbara region.

Following on from its starring role in Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia, the spectacular Kimberley region in Australia’s North West (www.australiasnorthwest.com) was recently announced as the first Western Australian destination to be included in Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes Program.

Regarded as one of the world’s last true wilderness areas and more than 20 million years in the making, the rugged ranges and coastline present a unique mix of

seclusion and majestic scenery that feature prominently within Australia’s future international tourism marketing.

There are many elements that make the Kimberley extraordinary. It’s home to the world’s only Horizontal Waterfalls, the unique beehive-like formations of the Bungle Bungle Range in World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park and Lake Argyle - the largest freshwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere, more than 20 times the size of Sydney Harbour.

Interestingly, the Kimberley covers an expanse of almost 423,000 square kilometres, but has an estimated population of just 30,000 – meaning the Kimberley has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on earth! Visitors here are inspired by the wide open spaces that create a sense of freedom and exhilaration that is truly Australian.

Kimberley Wild Expeditions (www.kimberleywild.com.au) offer a host of options for touring the Kimberley – from half day tours of Broome, to five days in the Bungle Bungle Range or extended Kimberley holiday adventures.

Australia’sonlybiodiversityhotspotnamedinLonelyPlanet’sTop10

Lonely Planet named Australia’s South West (www.australiassouthwest.com) as one of the World’s Top 10 Regions in 2010.

Recognised as one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hot-spots (the only one in Australia) – this latest award is testament to the region’s extraordinary appeal.

Australia’s South West Chief Executive Officer, Sascha Papalia, said she was thrilled the region has now been internationally recognised.

“Asweknow, theregionhasaperfectblendofnaturalexperiences such as beautiful beaches and tall timber forests combined with world class food, wine and boutiqueaccommodation,”MsPapaliasaid.

Few places in the world can boast such an amazing mix of elements as Australia’s South West. Here, beautiful beaches, forests and world class wineries blend together, creating an idyllic holiday destination.

There are so many amazing natural attractions to discover in the region. From wild surf beaches and dramatic sea cliffs, to secluded bays, tall tree forests and underground caves – it is all waiting to be discovered.

A must do for any nature lover is the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, located ten minutes north of Walpole. It’s the first walk trail of its kind in the world – at 600 metres (656 yards) long and 40 metres (44 yards) above ground, it has been specially designed to minimise impact on the forest. Walking amongst the tall forest trees is an exhilarating experience.

Western Australia has more beaches and the longest coastline of any State or territory in Australia.

It’s also home to Lucky Bay in Esperance – scientifically proven as the whitest beach in Australia and also the spot where you’re most likely to see kangaroos sunbaking on the shore.

With more than 12,000 kilometres of pristine coastline and an idyllic climate, it’s no wonder visitors flock to WA to explore the underwater wonderland teeming with marine life and to take part in the range water sports on offer.

Haveawhale(shark)ofatime atNingaloo!

Nothing compares to the exhilaration of swimming with the world’s largest fish, the whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef on Western Australia’s Coral Coast (www.australiacoralcoast.com).

This region is one of only a handful of spots in the world where whale sharks congregate regularly and is widely considered to be one of the best places to swim with them.

Whale sharks can grow up to a massive 18 metres long and visit Ningaloo between April and July each year following the mass spawning of coral in the pristine waters of Ningaloo Marine Park.

Tourists can now assist with crucial scientific research by sending their holiday snaps of the whale sharks they encounter at Ningaloo to www.whaleshark.org to assist with the Ecocean Join the Dots campaign. The images are then analysed to establish whale shark movements, important habitats and population health.

Ocean Eco Adventures (www.oceanecoadventures.com.au) is a fantastic specialist operator that will allow you to get up close and personal with these gentle giants of the ocean.

From April to October the company offers whale shark, manta ray, snorkel and scuba diving tours; as well as three day / two nights on Ningaloo Reef liveaboards – the ultimate way to live and breathe the adventure and beauty of this underwater wonderland.

From November to February, Ocean Eco Adventures heads south to the Margaret River Wine Region and offers humpback whale, seal and dolphin tours.

Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing reef in the world. Reaching nearly 20 kilometres seaward and encompassing a massive 5,000 square kilometres of ocean, it is also one of the world’s most biodiverse.

In addition to whale sharks, the region offers so much for visitors to see and do. NewbabydolphinbornatMonkeyMia

Monkey Mia welcomed some new additions to its dolphin pod in December 2009, with the arrival of two babies.

Named by the students of Shark Bay Primary school, Khamun is the first calf born to Kiya, one of the area’s regular beach visiting dolphins. Kiya’s mother, Puck also gave birth just two weeks prior to Samu.

Monkey Mia is located on a unique section of World Heritage coastline only 30 minutes drive northeast from the town of Denham. It has a relaxed atmosphere and those who love nature will delight in the huge variety of animal and bird life found nearby.

Wonderful things started happening in the early 1960s, when a pod of bottlenose dolphins began what has become a daily ritual. Every day a number of dolphins swim into the clear shallows of the bay to interact with humans, delighting visitors with their intelligence and grace. As the dolphins are wild, their numbers and visiting times vary, however they usually go to the shore several times a day - most frequently in the morning.

Those who love marine life, but don’t enjoy getting their feet wet will soon be able to marvel at a myriad of marine life through the windows of the Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory (www.busseltonjetty.com.au).

The Busselton Jetty is currently in the process of having a multi-million dollar refurbishment and the Underwater Observatory is expected to re-open later this year. This will allow visitors to descend to the ocean floor and view the natural marine ecosystem surrounding the Busselton Jetty, which is Australia’s largest artificial reef.

The Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory is one of only seven of its kind in the world and surrounding marine life is not fed, nor is artificial light used to attract them. The conversion of two ocean currents provides ideal conditions for a plethora of marine life – more than 300 different species of sub-tropical and tropical sponges, coral fish and invertebrates.

First built in 1865, the Busselton Jetty originally stood at just 176m. Several additions were made to the structure over a 90 year period making it the longest wooden Jetty in the Southern Hemisphere standing at 1.841km in length.

The $27.1 million refurbishment project is nearing completion and the Underwater Observatory and Jetty Train are scheduled to officially re-open in summer 2010/2011.

The Busselton Jetty Interpretive Centre is open every day during business hours and is home to the Project Update Wall that provides daily updates on progress and a large scale image of the Refurbishment Plans.

The Interpretive Centre has a fantastic marine themed giftware section with products sourced both locally and globally, and also features the Heritage Museum.

WA boasts more than 12,000 species of wildflowers (www.wildflowerswa.com) - more than the rest of Australia combined, attracting visitors from all over the world to study the unique varieties.

The wildflower season starts in June in the north of the State and sweeps south, finishing by November – meaning you can enjoy different species at various times and destinations.

Western Australia also has one of the longest whale watching seasons in the world, running from June until December each year and stretching the length of the West Australian coast. In many places along the coast you can see whales from shore, or join one of the many whale watching tours. The estimated population of humpback whales is approximately 21,000.

Flinders Bay in Augusta is the first port of call for many whales that come to feed, breed and play between June and September each year. Whale watching here is a unique experience because it’s one of the few places in the world where you can observe southern right and humpback whales interacting.

The sheltered bays of Augusta are visited by approximately 5000 humpback and southern right whales annually.

Western Australia’s vast and varied landscapes are deeply embedded in Aboriginal history - and with many market-ready Indigenous tourism products now on offer, visitors can take part in authentic experiences to learn more about the oldest living cultural history in the world.

Local Noongar man, Greg Nannup, has launched the Kings Park Indigenous Heritage Tour, which invites visitors to learn about the Indigenous heritage and history of Kings Park and Botanic Gardens. (www.indigenoustourswa.com)

Before European settlement Perth’s Noongar people used the park’s lofty heights for weddings and celebrations, just as it is used by West Australians today. The park was also used for burials, dances and hunting.

The Kings Park Indigenous Heritage Tour is an enjoyable and fun way to learn about the original West Australians who used and loved Kings Park for tens of thousands of years. In addition, the Kings Park Aboriginal Art Gallery dramatically enriches your understanding and experience of Indigenous Art and Culture.

In addition, in late 2009 the Nannup family launched The Swan River Dreaming tour in conjunction with Rottnest Express (www.rottnestexpress.com.au).

Guests are taken back thousands of years to a time in the Dreaming and are given a unique insight into the traditions and spirituality of Aboriginal people, allowing them to experience the Swan River and Kings Park through the eyes of traditional landowners.

bush medicines and bush tucker, and explore the fascinating geography and history of the Kimberley.

Based in Western Australia’s dramatic Kimberley region, Uptuyu can tailor a personalised experience to discover one of the world’s last great wilderness areas.

Remote and rugged, its landscape is spectacular with rich red earth, wide horizons, ancient gorges, crystal clear rock pools and pristine beaches.

A core base for adventures is the Oongkalkada Wilderness Camp established at Udialla Springs, a 3000-acre Nyikina-Mangala property between Broome and Derby fronting the mighty Fitzroy River. The camp is near fresh mineral springs and is surrounded by an array of native fauna and flora.

DiscoverthehistoryofKooljaman

Kooljaman at Cape Leveque (www.kooljaman.com.au) is a multi award winning Aboriginal owned wilderness camp. It is a beautiful remote paradise offering a quiet place to get away from it all. Located 220 kilometres north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula, Cape Leveque is a popular spot to fish, swim and snorkel or just sit back and relax.

This area is steeped in fascinating history – and learning about this aspect enhances your stay at Kooljaman at Cape Leveque.

Kooljaman is the Bardi Aboriginal name for Cape Leveque. It is thought the Aboriginal people may have come to this part of the continent somewhere between 5000-7000 years ago after the last Ice Age. The sea level rose and formed King Sound and the many hills and mountains became islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago.

Aboriginal people of the Cape Leveque area would have had contact with visitors such as Indonesian and Macassan fishermen and may have sighted European

explorers such as William Dampier when he sailed into what is now King Sound.

One visitor was the French ship, Geographe in 1803, captained by Nicholas Baudin. Aboard was the hydrographer Pierre Leveque whose name the Cape now carries.

HomeValleyfostersthe futureofIndigenousTourism

Home Valley Station’s onsite Indigenous TAFE academy is central to the sustainable development of both the pastoral and tourism aspects of the station.

Owned by the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) Home Valley Station (www.homevalley.com.au) was purchased on behalf of the Balanggarra people of the East Kimberley.

Since acquiring the Home Valley pastoral lease in 1999, the ILC has endeavoured to involve local Indigenous people in all aspects of the station’s operations. In both its tourism and pastoral enterprises, members of the local Indigenous communities have assisted in all manner of projects associated with the resurrection of what was, at the time of purchase, a poorly neglected cattle station.

Today, Home Valley is a hub of activity that caters not only for travellers of the Gibb River Road, but for Indigenous students and trainees from many communities across the Kimberley.

As well as all-new accommodation options, Home Valley Station offers the Dusty Bar and Grill, two lagoon style pools, new reception and station store, conference facilities and a cultural centre.

The Extraordinary Taxi Ride was the first of many integrated marketing campaigns to bring Tourism Western Australia’s (Tourism WA) new Experience Extraordinary brand to life.

Relying heavily on digital marketing, the Extraordinary Taxi Ride brought the Experience Extraordinary brand position to life in a series of short films and blogs available for viewing online.

The Extraordinary Taxi Ride took 22 passengers from around the world over the course of nine weeks to Western Australia’s most iconic destinations to experience the sights, sounds, people and places that make Western Australia extraordinary. The entire journey was filmed and broadcast for the world to watch online.

However, the digital aspect of the campaign started long before the taxi set off on its epic road trip.

The campaign commenced in February 2010 with the recruitment of Western Australia’s most extraordinary reallifetaxidrivertobethe“hero”ofthecampaign.

All taxi drivers in Western Australia were invited to enter the competition by recording their details and answering some questions over the phone. From more than 460 applications, five finalist cabbies were shortlisted and given the opportunity to spend the next six weeks campaigning for public support. This was where the digital fun began.

Traditional marketing methods were undertaken to drive traffic to the campaign website, encouraging people to vote for their favourite cabbie - sparking both public awareness and media attention of the campaign and the new brand. More than 14,000 individual votes were recorded during this phase of the campaign.

During this phase, consumers could also submit their “extraordinaryWAdestinations”they’dlikethetaxitovisit on its journey. Utilising Google Maps technology, these destinations were plotted and will be visible for the duration of the campaign.

The next step was to put the call out for passengers to join the winning taxi driver on this journey of a lifetime. Utilising traditional and digital marketing

methods, consumers were directed online to submit the“extraordinaryreason”they’dliketobeapartof the journey with either a video or photo and written submission. Some of this content was also housed on the campaign website, further increasing interest and visitation.

In addition to being run in Australia, the Extraordinary Taxi Ride campaign was activated in five key international markets (UK, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia), with each international market hosting their own website. In the first three months it was active, the domestic version of the website alone had more than 133,000 hits, with people spending more than 12,500 hours engaging with the content.

The launch of the Extraordinary Taxi Ride on 9 April saw the focus of the campaign shift, with all PR channelsdirectingpeopleto“followthejourney”onlinebyviewing“films”capturedalongthewaythathighlighted each of the eleven legs of the journey; as well as through regular blog and image postings.

Regular electronic direct mails were also sent to Tourism WA’s email database with links to photos, blogs, films and competitions.

The digital component of the campaign was supported by search engine marketing, online advertising, social media including Twitter and traditional marketing and public relations initiatives including television, radio, news articles, print advertising, outdoor and printed collateral all pointing to following the taxi ride online as the call to action.

A Facebook page was also created to distribute campaign content and to maximise social media opportunities by providing a place for passengers to share and discuss their experiences, with links directing people to extraordinarytaxiride.com for further information.

Ninewinewondersofthewest

Western Australia is home to nine sensational wine regions, each with their own characteristics and qualities.

Six of the regions are located in Australia’s South West (www.australiassouthwest.com), with the Perth Hills, Swan District and WA’s oldest wine region, the Swan Valley, situated in the Experience Perth area (www.experienceperth.com).

The South West’s warm Mediterranean climate and rich fertile soils combine to provide an exceptional environment for growing grape vines.

The Margaret River Wine Region in the South West of the State is by far the most well known and established region. The most successful wines produced in this region are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Be sure to visit some of the founding wineries of the region such as Leeuwin Estate, Vasse Felix and the biodynamic industry leader Cullen.

In addition to the world-class wine on offer, here you’ll find top notch local produce, pristine beaches and many fantastic accommodation and touring options.

The nearby region of Geographe, although less established, produces excellent Chardonnay and

Semillon varieties. Further south you’ll find the Pemberton Wine Region, with Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir produced here amongst the beauty of tall timber forests and flowers.

Closer to Perth, the Peel Wine Region established in 1974, is known for its Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons.

The most predominant wine variety in the Manjimup region is Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir demonstrating its suitability in recent years. In addition to wine, Manjimup is home to a highly successful black truffle industry.

The Great Southern Wine Region is a Mecca for food and wine lovers. Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most important wine from the region, noted for their exceptional quality. Before you visit download a food and wine trail map of the region from www.greatsouthernregion.com.au

Located South East of Perth, the Blackwood Valley Wine Region produces great Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Darling Ranges in the Perth Hills have seen winemaking for more than a century. Wines produced in the Perth Hills Wine Region include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.

Only 30 minutes drive from Perth city the Swan Valley and Perth Hills are where the locals go to enjoy wineries, restaurants and cafes, breweries and distilleries, fresh local produce, arts, crafts and shopping at road side stalls selling just-picked local produce.

The Swan Valley, as its name suggests, is located alongside the Swan River and is Western Australia’s oldest wine producing region. Today, it is home to more than 40 family-owned vineyards, many of which are still run by the descendants of Croatian and Italian families who came to the area in the early 1920s.

The tradition of small boutique Swan Valley wineries is what gives this wine region its charm. Among the big international players like Houghton and Sandalford are many smaller wineries, where the winemakers and vineyard owners greet and serve you at the cellar door.

In 2008, film making legend Baz Luhrmann selected the magnificent Kimberley region to shoot scenes for Australia the movie.

Another gem of the Kimberley, the exotic pearling town of Broome, was the primary filming location for Indigenous musical comedy, Bran Nue Dae (www.brannuedaemovie.com) which was released in early 2010. The beautiful red earth, turquoise sea and deep blue sky look magical on the big screen.

Bran Nue Dae features many of Broome’s iconic locations, such as Sun Pictures – the world’s oldest picture gardens, Matso’s Brewery, Roebuck Bay, beautiful Cable Beach and the quaint church at Beagle Bay.

WA’s Pilbara region – the ruggedly beautiful hub of iron ore mining in the State, will feature strongly in the movie Red Dog (www.reddogmovie.com), filmed earlier this year and will be released in 2011.

Red Dog is the real life heart-warming story of a lovable and charismatic kelpie called Koko who united a mining community in the 1970s and 80s.

Hollywood superstar Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, A Beautiful Mind, Glory Road) will play the leading role of John in the true story based on the novel, Red Dog by Louis De Berniere.
