Visitors to Western Australia’s capital city, Perth often remark on the friendly, laidback environment that welcomes them.

Perth is the only capital city in Australia where you can choose to either explore a world-class wine region, picnic in one of Australia’s oldest conservation areas or watch the sun set over the ocean, all within 30 minutes from the city. And with more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia, which ever activity you choose, chances are that there will be a blue sky overhead. It’s no wonder Perth has been voted as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

A visit to the world’s largest inner city park, Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, is a must for any visitor to Perth. Enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants or cafes, or pack a picnic and enjoy the breath-taking views over the city skyline and Swan River. The new Indigenous tour of the park provides a fascinating insight into life before European settlement.

The beach plays an important role in Perth’s culture and with 19 in the metropolitan area to choose from, it’s easy to find your own slice of white sand to soak up the sun. Try surfing at Scarborough Beach, or simply relax and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from Cottesloe Beach.

While you’re in Perth you can also get your fill of culture. The Art Gallery of Western Australia features a permanent collection of some of Australia’s most famous artists. Their Indigenous art collection is one of the best in the world.

The quaint holiday island of Rottnest is just a short ferry ride from Perth, Fremantle or Hillary’s Boat Harbour. Here, you can snorkel over shipwrecks, spot quokkas – the island’s unique and friendly marsupial, relax on the beach, or throw in a fishing line. There are no cars on Rottnest so pedal power is king.

A little further south of Perth, you can swim with dolphins in the ocean at Rockingham or take a cruise and watch them play in Mandurah’s waters.

A visit to Western Australia’s oldest wine region, the Swan Valley, is a must for food and wine lovers. Spend the day visiting the many restaurants, wineries and microbreweries to sample the quality local produce.

Need some nightlife? You’ll find Perth has a lively and original music and arts scene. Northbridge, Leederville, Subiaco, Mt Lawley and Fremantle are full of bars and restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Fremantle is considered the best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape in the world, with its world-famous heritage buildings and a fascinating maritime and convict history. Soak up the laidback ambience, chill-out in a street café, enjoy fish and chips fresh off the boat at the Fishing Boat Harbour; or a cleansing pale-ale at an award winning microbrewery.

Situated north of Perth, the Indian Ocean of Australia’s Coral Coast is teeming with a myriad of colourful marine life including humpback whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and schools of colourful tropical fish.

On your way north be sure to stop at the Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles, regarded as one of Australia’s most unique landscapes. You can walk amongst these incredible limestone spires that rise eerily out of the sand, some several metres tall. It’s the only place in Australia like it.

Head further north to Ningaloo Reef or Exmouth to become one of the lucky few who can say they’ve swum alongside the biggest fish in the world – the mighty whale sharks. Whale sharks pass by the coral coast each year from April to July following the mass spawning of coral in the area.

Easily accessible from shore, Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing reef in the world and one of the most the biodiverse. Its unique attributes have attracted national and world-wide attention including a recent nomination for World Heritage listing.

The Ningaloo coast is one of the few regions in the world where whale sharks congregate regularly and is widely considered to be one of the best places to swim with them.

Visitors can swim with these harmless gentle giants by joining one of the specialist whale shark tour boats that operate out of the small coastal towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay.

There’s also the chance to swim with graceful manta rays, or snorkel over the reef which is only a few metres from shore. No overcrowded pontoons here – it’s just you, a mask and fins, and the most awe inspiring marine life you’re ever likely to see. Pristine waters make visibility excellent and WA’s warm weather means you hardly ever need a wetsuit.

Dolphins are found along the coast and there are many opportunities to interact with these inquisitive creatures – feed them at Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay World Heritage area or watch them at play.

You’ll also find an array of interesting and enjoyable marine activities along the coastline. Explore deserted islands of the Dampier Archipelago and the Abrolhos Islands or chase some waves off Kalbarri and Geraldton.

Inland, the wildflowers on display in between July and November, the wildflower season rivals the coral for colour and is one of the State’s best loved natural attractions.

For history, heritage and high adventure, head to the Gold Rush country of the 1890s.

Western Australia produces 75 per cent of the country’s gold and has approximately two thirds of Australia’s gold resources. In Kalgoorlie, the site of one of Australia’s biggest gold rushes, you can visit the biggest open-pit gold mine in Australia and Australia’s only Mining Hall of Fame.

Kalgoorlie remains Western Australia’s largest goldfields town and is famed for its fascinating gold rush history, fabulous old buildings and old gold miners’ ghost towns. Here you can take a step back in time and pan for gold, take a tour of the Super Pit Mine and mix with the colourful characters at the many pubs, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants that line vibrant Hannan Street.

While you’re in the Golden Outback, check out world-famous sculptor Antony Gormley’s life size figures contemplating the salt flats of Lake Ballard near Menzies. Wildflowers flourish here too. During the wildflower season, the region is covered in an artist’s palette of colour.

And to see Australia’s whitest beach, bush and bunking down under the stars, head south to Esperance – a place so relaxed even the kangaroos sun bake on the beach.

The authentic way to see the real outback is by four wheel drive. And if you want to meet some locals as well as wildlife, make sure you stay at a pub, farm or station along the way.

australia’s north westThe North West of the State is a vast wilderness area waiting to be explored.

Located near Tom Price in the Pilbara region, The Karijini National Park is a must see. Home to some of the oldest rock formations in the world, dating back two billion years, Karijini is one of Australia’s largest and most spectacular national parks featuring dramatic gorges and waterfalls, which are easily accessible. For an indigenous perspective on the area, stop by the Interpretive Centre as you enter the park.

The Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia’s north is one of the richest sites in the world for prehistoric rock engravings, with more than 10,000 Aboriginal engravings in more than 500 recorded sites, dating back 30,000 years. View some of the rock art on The Jaburara Heritage Trail, near the coastal town of Karratha. A 3.5 kilometre (2.2 mile) walk, the trail provides a fascinating insight into the traditional inhabitants of WA’s West Pilbara Coast, the Jaburara people.

The spectacular Kimberley region was recently announced as one of a handful of Australian regions to be included in Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes Program and will feature prominently within Australia’s future international tourism marketing. The Kimberley is Western Australia’s first region in the National Landscapes Program which highlights iconic destinations across Australia.

As you explore the Kimberley it’s easy to believe you’re the first person to ever visit the area -

that is until you stumble across ancient rock art. The Bradshaw paintings, or Gwion Gwion, near the Gibb River Road are thought to date back to the last ice age.

Perhaps the oldest ‘artwork’ is the Bungle Bungle Range in World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park. Mother Nature spent 20 million years eroding these huge orange and black ‘beehives’ into a state of perfection.

The Kimberley coastline is equally breathtaking. With 22 kilometres of white sand, kissed by warm, crystal waters, Cable Beach, Broome is justifiably world famous.

A luxury cruise is a great way to explore the Kimberley coast, rivers and gorges. Make sure you include the Buccaneer Archipelago on your itinerary. The fishing is amazing, and the Horizontal Waterfall spectacular.

Created by the large tidal movement of the Kimberley, the Horizontal Waterfalls is the only place in the world this can be found. Get up close by taking a boat ride through the falls.

• TheBungleBunglerangeintheWorldHeritage Listed Purnululu National Park, Western Australia, is the most unique range in the world, 350-million-years in the making. The Bungle Bungle range is by far the most outstanding example of cone karst in sandstones anywhere in the world! Flying over or camping in the range is an exhilarating experience.

• TheNorthWestofWesternAustraliaistheonly place in the world where you can see the Staircase to the Moon. Occurring across the coastline at Onslow, Dampier, Point Samson Peninsula, Port Hedland and Broome, this natural phenomenon occurs when the full moon rises over the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide from March to October, creating the optical illusion of a staircase reaching for the moon. Staircase to the Moon is often complemented by local night markets – sample local fare, purchase crafts and delight in talented local entertainers.

• Inthelate1890’s,acollectionofAustralianAboriginal rock art featuring distinctive stick like figures was seen by European eyes for the first time. Archeological dating has placed the Gyorn Gyorn paintings, sometimes known as Bradshaws, among the oldest discovered.

Wave Rock is a two-billion-year-old granite cliff, standing 15 metres (49 feet) high, 110 metres (361 feet) long and shaped remarkably like a huge wave. You can stand on Wave Rock and surf one of Australia’s biggest waves!

• NingalooReef,WesternAustralia,isoneof the best places in the world for swimming with the largest fish in the sea, the gentle whale shark which grows up to 18 metres long. Ningaloo is one of very few regions in the world where whale sharks gather regularly in coastal waters and are easily accessible to visitors.

Launched in late 2009, Naturebank will see the release of land for low impact accommodation, mostly within national parks and reserves - providing a boost for tourism, indigenous investment, employment and capacity building - while offering eco-friendly, sustainable accommodation and nature-based tourism experiences.

The program will pave the way for world-class accommodation facilities and activities in the heart of Western Australia’s national parks - some of the most stunning and extraordinary attractions in the world.

Naturebank’s new developments will take employment and enterprise opportunities to remote parts of the State and give our tourism industry a significant boost.

Monkey Mia welcomed some new additions to its dolphin pod in December 2009, with the arrival of two babies.

Named by the students of Shark Bay Primary school, Khamun is the first calf born to Kiya, one of the area’s regular beach visiting dolphins. Kiya’s mother, Puck also gave birth just two weeks prior to Samu.

Monkey Mia is located on a unique section of World Heritage coastline only 30 minutes drive northeast from the town of Denham. It has a relaxed atmosphere and those who love nature will delight in the huge variety of animal and bird life found nearby.

Wonderful things started happening in the early 1960s, when a pod of bottlenose dolphins began what has become a daily ritual. Every day a number of dolphins swim into the clear shallows of the bay to interact with humans, delighting visitors with their intelligence and grace. As the dolphins are wild, their numbers and visiting times vary, however they usually go to the shore several times a day - most frequently in the morning.

Those who love marine life, but don’t enjoy getting their feet wet will soon be able to marvel at a myriad of marine life through the windows of the Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory (www.busseltonjetty.com.au).

The Busselton Jetty is currently in the process of having a multi-million dollar refurbishment and the Underwater Observatory is expected to re-open later this year. This will allow visitors to descend to the ocean floor and view the natural marine ecosystem surrounding the Busselton Jetty, which is Australia’s largest artificial reef.

The Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory is one of only seven of its kind in the world and surrounding marine life is not fed, nor is artificial light used to attract them. The conversion of two ocean currents provides ideal conditions for a plethora of marine life – more than 300 different species of sub-tropical and tropical sponges, coral fish and invertebrates.

First built in 1865, the Busselton Jetty originally stood at just 176m. Several additions were made to the structure over a 90 year period making it the longest wooden Jetty in the Southern Hemisphere standing at 1.841km in length.

The $27.1 million refurbishment project is nearing completion and the Underwater Observatory and Jetty Train are scheduled to officially re-open in summer 2010/2011.

The Busselton Jetty Interpretive Centre is open every day during business hours and is home to the Project Update Wall that provides daily updates on progress and a large scale image of the Refurbishment Plans.

The Interpretive Centre has a fantastic marine themed giftware section with products sourced both locally and globally, and also features the Heritage Museum.

Just as the whales begin to make a splash off the WA coast in June each year, so too does the largest collection of wildflowers in the world – the perfect duo for any nature lover.

The wildflower season starts in June in the north of the State and sweeps south, finishing by November – meaning you can enjoy different species at various times and destinations.

Home Valley Station’s onsite Indigenous TAFE academy is central to the sustainable development of both the pastoral and tourism aspects of the station.

Owned by the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) Home Valley Station (www.homevalley.com.au) was purchased on behalf of the Balanggarra people of the East Kimberley.

Since acquiring the Home Valley pastoral lease in 1999, the ILC has endeavoured to involve local Indigenous people in all aspects of the station’s operations. In both its tourism and pastoral enterprises, members of the local Indigenous communities have assisted in all manner of projects associated with the resurrection of what was, at the time of purchase, a poorly neglected cattle station.

Today, Home Valley is a hub of activity that caters not only for travellers of the Gibb River Road, but for Indigenous students and trainees from many communities across the Kimberley.

As well as all-new accommodation options, Home Valley Station offers the Dusty Bar and Grill, two lagoon style pools, new reception and station store, conference facilities and a cultural centre.

The Extraordinary Taxi Ride was the first of many integrated marketing campaigns to bring Tourism Western Australia’s (Tourism WA) new Experience Extraordinary brand to life.

Relying heavily on digital marketing, the Extraordinary Taxi Ride brought the Experience Extraordinary brand position to life in a series of short films and blogs available for viewing online.

The Extraordinary Taxi Ride took 22 passengers from around the world over the course of nine weeks to Western Australia’s most iconic destinations to experience the sights, sounds, people and places that make Western Australia extraordinary. The entire journey was filmed and broadcast for the world to watch online.

However, the digital aspect of the campaign started long before the taxi set off on its epic road trip.

The campaign commenced in February 2010 with the recruitment of Western Australia’s most extraordinary reallifetaxidrivertobethe“hero”ofthecampaign.

All taxi drivers in Western Australia were invited to enter the competition by recording their details and answering some questions over the phone. From more than 460 applications, five finalist cabbies were shortlisted and given the opportunity to spend the next six weeks campaigning for public support. This was where the digital fun began.

Traditional marketing methods were undertaken to drive traffic to the campaign website, encouraging people to vote for their favourite cabbie - sparking both public awareness and media attention of the campaign and the new brand. More than 14,000 individual votes were recorded during this phase of the campaign.

During this phase, consumers could also submit their “extraordinaryWAdestinations”they’dlikethetaxitovisit on its journey. Utilising Google Maps technology, these destinations were plotted and will be visible for the duration of the campaign.

The next step was to put the call out for passengers to join the winning taxi driver on this journey of a lifetime. Utilising traditional and digital marketing

methods, consumers were directed online to submit the“extraordinaryreason”they’dliketobeapartof the journey with either a video or photo and written submission. Some of this content was also housed on the campaign website, further increasing interest and visitation.

In addition to being run in Australia, the Extraordinary Taxi Ride campaign was activated in five key international markets (UK, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia), with each international market hosting their own website. In the first three months it was active, the domestic version of the website alone had more than 133,000 hits, with people spending more than 12,500 hours engaging with the content.

The launch of the Extraordinary Taxi Ride on 9 April saw the focus of the campaign shift, with all PR channelsdirectingpeopleto“followthejourney”onlinebyviewing“films”capturedalongthewaythathighlighted each of the eleven legs of the journey; as well as through regular blog and image postings.

Regular electronic direct mails were also sent to Tourism WA’s email database with links to photos, blogs, films and competitions.

The digital component of the campaign was supported by search engine marketing, online advertising, social media including Twitter and traditional marketing and public relations initiatives including television, radio, news articles, print advertising, outdoor and printed collateral all pointing to following the taxi ride online as the call to action.

• ThetourismindustryinWesternAustraliadirectlyemploys 47,140 people (4.2 per cent of the State’s workforce). Indirectly, tourism contributes another 35,430 jobs, which makes 82,560 jobs in total in Western Australia. 1

• Globally,thetravelandtourismindustryisoneofthe world’s largest, directly employing 80.7 million people worldwide, or an estimated 2.8 per cent of all jobs in 2009. 2

• In2009,5.8millionvisitorsspentmorethan$4.5billion in Western Australia. 3 4 5

• Inthesameperiod,694,100internationalvisitorstoWestern Australia spent $1.7 billion. 4 5

• TravellingtotheregionsoutsideofExperiencePerthis a key focus for the tourism industry in Western Australia. In 2009, some 30 per cent of international visitors travelled to regional Western Australia. Added to the 62 per cent of intrastate visitors and 34 per cent of interstate visitors touring the regions, this generates employment, helps to stabilise country populations and, indirectly, enables services such as schools and banks to be maintained. 3 4

• Globally,internationaltouristarrivalsdecreasedin 2009, with growth in the last quarter of 2009. 6 Although international tourism experienced a decline at a global level, foreign national arrivals into Perth Airport grew by 4.5 per cent in 2009 compared to the previous year. 7

• InDecember2009,theTourismForecastingCommittee predicted a 0.5 per cent decrease in international visitors to Australia in 2009. 8 However, at the end of 2009 Western Australia performed better than forecast, with the International Visitor Survey showing that there was a 2.7 per cent increase in international visitors to Western Australia in 2009 compared to the previous year. 4
