Introduction Cellulosic biomass from agricultural residues has become an important energy source because its use for biofuels production does not compete with food production; however, overuse of this biomass could cause a decrease in soil quality, and agricultural crop production could then be affected if the residue is not left for soil amendment (Lal, 2009). The Conservation Reserve Pro- gram (CRP) began in 1985 as an effort to prevent soil erosion and enhance groundwater recharge from highly erodible lands. About 30 million acres of CRP land prevent 0.3 million tons of nitro- gen and 50,000 tons of phosphorous annually from flowing into river or lakes (USDA, 2012). About 50 million tons of dry biomass could be harvested annually from CRP land, indicating great poten- tial for bioenergy production (Perlack et al., 2005). A recent study suggested that CRP biomass is a potential bioenergy feedstock if appropriate management practices are applied (Lee et al., 2013). Compared with conversion of CRP land for starch-based agricul- tural production such as corn and soybean, direct use of the CRP land for cellulosic biomass production would avoid carbon debt according to a recent analysis (Gelfand et al., 2011). The torrefaction of biomass is basically a thermal process conducted in the tempera- ture range of 200–300 C under anaerobic conditions atmospheric conditions (Van der Stelt et al., 2011). Biomass moisture content (MC) is reduced in the initial drying process and biomass is par- tially degraded. Studies have shown that torrefaction enhanced the properties of different biomass materials (Couhert et al., 2009; Ren et al., 2012). Torrefaction is being applied to bioenergy pro- duction in thermal–chemical and biochemical platforms, and the enhanced properties after torrefaction were reported to improve the efficiency of biomass gasification and conserve chemical energy (Prins et al., 2006). Energy consumption was reported to be lower for torrefied biomass than for untorrefied biomass in the produc- tion of cellulosic ethanol (Chiaramonti et al., 2011). . Introduction

educes storage cost (Medic et al., 2012). Thus, torrefaction offersreat potential for the biomass processing chain.

In this paper, we report the first study of CRP biomassnhancement through torrefaction. Changes in CRP biomass werenvestigated through different techniques. To integrate the tor-efaction unit into the biomass processing system, an economicvaluation is critical for commercial application. We conductedur technical analysis including the results of mass and energyalances. Following the analysis of torrefaction unit, we analyzedow torrefaction affected related biomass processing units such asransportation, grinding, and pelletization.

. Experimental

.1. Materials

The CRP biomass was harvested in 2012 from Valley Falls,ansas, and field-dried to reduce the MC to about 20%. The biomassas then stored in plastic bag at 4 ◦C. All chemicals used in this

tudy were from Sigma–Aldrich, Inc. (St. Louis, MO).

.2. Torrefaction

The torrefaction experiments were conducted using a Parr 4570ressure reactor with a Parr 4848 temperature controller (Parr

nstrument Co., Moline, IL). CRP biomass was cut to about 10 cmn length before loading. After biomass loading, the reactor waslled with a nitrogen flux to completely remove oxygen. Experi-ents tested different combinations of temperature (200, 250, and

00 ◦C) and time (15, 30, and 45 min). Volatile chemicals were col-ected with a cold trap before exhausting to the atmosphere. Afterreatment, the reactor was immediately cooled with water. Sam-les were weighed and collected for further analysis.

.3. Compositional analysis

The structural polymer (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) andC of the CRP biomass were analyzed following procedures from

he National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) (Sluiter et al.,004). The elemental composition was measured with CHNS/Olemental Analyzer (PerkinElmer 2400 Series II, PerkinElmer Inc.,altham, MA). About 3 mg of the ground sample was weighed

sing a PerkinElmer AD-6 Autobalance (PerkinElmer Inc., Waltham,A), and was then introduced into the combustion chamber for

urning under pure oxygen atmosphere. The gases from combus-ion were separated in a quartz column containing copper wiresnd detected by a thermoconductometer. Results are reported as aercentage of initial dry weight (w/w).

.4. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)

Decomposition characteristics of the biomass were analyzed byhermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) (Perkin-Elmer TGA Pyris 7, Nor-alk, CT). Around 5 mg of sample was measured at a heating rate

of 20 ◦C/min from 40 to 700 ◦C under a dry nitrogen flux. Both per-centage weight change and derivative weight were reported.

2.5. High heating value (HHV)

The HHV of the CRP biomass was determined by a calorime-ter (IKA-Calorimeter C 200, IKA-Werke GmbH and Co. KG, Staufen,Germany) with a benzoic acid standard. After grinding, about 1 gof sample was pelletized then loaded into an adiabatic bomb forburning. The released energy was reported in Megajoule (MJ) perkg. The HHV was also calculated using the elemental results forcomparison according to the equation (Sheng and Azevedo, 2005):

2.6. Energy balance

The energy and mass flow was modeled using Aspen Plus 7.3,as shown in Fig. 1. The energy balance for torrefaction unit wasstudied by considering the total energy input (EI), the total energyoutput (EO), the high heating value of biomass before and aftertorrefaction (HHVm and HHVtm, respectively), process energy input(Ep), and energy loss (El) and using the following equations. Energyanalysis was conducted assuming the volatiles are combusted tosupply energy to the system.

2.7. Economic analysis

Economic analysis employs spreadsheet investment analysiscalculations. Equipment costs were estimated by Aspen software.Operation conditions were either from the literature or currentstudy. Other key assumptions were discussed in Section 3.2.

3. Results and discussion

3.1. Characteristics of torrefied biomass

3.1.1. Mass lossThe effects of torrefaction temperature and time on the dry mass

loss of CRP biomass were investigated; results are shown in Fig. 2.Previous reports showed that biomass MC significantly affected thedry mass recovery after torrefaction and almost 50% (wet base) ofbiomass lost (Van der Stelt et al., 2011). In this study, the mass losswas up to 35% at 300 ◦C because the CRP biomass has a relativelylow MC (about 20%) after a field dry. As shown in Fig. 2, the drymass loss increased as processing temperature and time increased.A significant jump in dry mass loss occurred when the tempera-ture increased from 250 to 300 ◦C, probably because one or morebiomass components was degraded at the higher temperature. Fur-ther composition analysis is necessary to better understand theincrease in mass loss.

3.1.2. Polymer composition analysisSince temperature significantly affects biomass loss, a detailed

composition analysis including structural polymers and elementswas conducted to understand how the processing temperature

hanged biomass structure. A previous review suggested that hemi-ellulose is extensively de-volatilized at high temperatures (e.g.,50–260 ◦C) (Van der Stelt et al., 2011), but most studies did notrovide evidence of detailed investigation of hemicellulose change

n biomass torrefaction. In addition, although individual poly-ers/monosaccharides were used in a previous torrefaction study

Chen et al., 2011), the results might not be useful to predict com-ositional changes in biomass because of the complex structure ofiomass. In this study, we analyzed the compositional change ofhree polymers, cellulose, xylan (the major polymer in hemicellu-

ose), and lignin using the NREL methods. As shown in Table 1, theylan content decreased significantly as the temperature increasedrom 200 to 300 ◦C, but xylan was not completely degraded even at

300 ◦C. About 25% of xylan remained according to weight loss mea-sured at 300 ◦C, probably because the other polymers in the twistedstructure of the biomass protect xylan from complete degrada-tion. Also found is the decrease of cellulose. Cellulose showed lessdegradation than hemicellulose at the same temperature, becausecellulose contains a well-ordered crystalline structure (Xu et al.,2013). Considering the significant dry mass loss (Fig. 2), it was cal-culated that about half of the cellulose was degraded at 300 ◦C.Lignin, however, was more thermally stable in the studied tem-perature range. Another recent report also suggested that lignincontent did not change significantly in the temperature range of230–290 ◦C (Chen and Kuo, 2011). Because the degradation of cel-lulose means loss of biomass heating value, torrefaction conditionsshould be managed appropriately.

3.1.3. TGATo understand the effects of temperature on biomass in a wide

temperature range, TGA was conducted to show the dynamicweight change of the CRP biomass (Fig. 3). As the temperatureincreased to 250 ◦C, biomass weight percentage decreased slowly.A light biomass torrefaction was considered at around 240 ◦C (Vander Stelt et al., 2011). With further increase in temperature, theweight started to decrease dramatically according to the weightderivative curve due to significant hemicellulose loss. At this stage(260–300 ◦C), cellulose and lignin remain the major energy com-ponents. The partial loss of cellulose, as shown in compositional

analysis, could be due to the degradation of amorphous cellulose,which is more sensitive to heat reactions than crystalline cellu-lose. Further increasing the temperature resulted in a sharp drop inweight percentage. The maximum rate of weight decrease occurred

round 350 ◦C because of the pyrolysis of cellulose and partialegradation of lignin (Yang et al., 2007). Lignin then became theajor energy source in the biomass. It is concluded that biomass

tructure as well as its characteristics change depending on tor-efaction conditions; therefore, a temperature control strategyould be used to produce torrefied biomass with desired charac-eristics.

.1.4. Elemental compositionElemental analysis was then conducted to show changes in three

lemental components (C, H, and O) (Table 1). Results suggestedhat the weight percentages of the components did not change sig-ificantly, but both the atomic ratios of O/C and H/C decreased. Theemoval of MC and the de-volatilization of formed CO2 could haveontributed to the decreases (Tapasvi et al., 2012). A Van Kreveleniagram was then built with all experimental data to show the rela-ionships of elemental ratios (Fig. 4). Both the atomic ratios of O/Cnd H/C displayed a decreasing trend as the temperature increased.he chemical properties of torrefied biomass vary depending onrocessing conditions, but they differ from coal, which has loweratios of both H/C and O/C (Fig. 4). The degradation of hemicellu-ose resulted in the loss of hydroxyl group instead of a simple loss ofylan, considering the fact that xylan, (C5H8O4)n, has an O/C ratiof 0.8. Similarly, the glucan unit of cellulose, (C6H10O5)n, has an/C ratio less than 1. Results suggested that the polysaccharidesere converted to other polymers/molecules with higher carbon

ontent. Further structural analysis is suggested to understand theffects of torrefaction on biomass structure.

.1.5. Heating value and energy densityAfter torrefaction, the HHV of biomass increased with

increased processing time (Table 2). A calculated HHV was alsolisted for comparison, suggesting that a rough estimation of thebiomass HHV could be obtained by elemental results. Energy den-sity increased up to 18% when processed at 300 ◦C for 45 min. Theremoval of hydroxyl groups increased carbon percentage as well asthe percentage of C C bonds, which is an important reason for theincreased energy density.

Energy recovery (ER) decreased with the increasing temper-ature. The torrefied CRP biomass at 300 ◦C and 45 min retainedonly about 76% of the energy in the original biomass as a resultof mass loss; note that recovery was calculated on solid biomass.If the energy carried by volatiles is recycled for combustion, netenergy efficiency will increase. Further economic analysis is dis-cussed below.

3.2. Economic potential

3.2.1. Energy input of torrefactionBefore an economic evaluation of torrefaction was made, energy

flow as well as mass flow was analyzed and provided as shown inFig. 1. The energy required for the torrefaction process (Ep) was esti-mated from the sensible heat energy that increases the biomass tocertain temperatures. The efficiency of energy input was consid-ered at 60% because of heat loss (Bergman and Kiel, 2005). Theenergy balance for the torrefaction system was then investigatedbased on energy content results shown in Table 2. The net ther-mal efficiency of torrefaction (enet) was in the range of 80–90%because most torrefaction gas could be used through combustionin a practical application (Uslu et al., 2008).

Sensitivity analysis was then performed to investigate how theenergy required for the torrefaction process is affected by chang-ing variables. Fig. 5 shows a sensitivity analysis of energy inputwith different processing temperatures and times. Ep increasedsignificantly with increasing temperature as a result of increasedsensible heat energy. The significant biomass loss at a higher tem-perature results in more degradation products including volatiles,which means that more energy was required to break the chemi-cal bonds. Although most of the heat energy in volatiles could berecycled (Fig. 1), the energy reduction in the solid fraction increasedwith increasing volatiles. This result also explains why Ep increasedas the processing time increased, because the energy loss to theenvironment increased during the accumulation period. A previousstudy suggested that biomass MC (in the range of 20–60%) affectsenergy input because the water evaporation consumes additional

energy during torrefaction (Ciolkosz and Wallace, 2011), but thesensitivity analysis in this study did not include it because the MCof CRP biomass was less than 20%.

zation, our analysis showed that the transportation cost of TOP ($0.28/(GJ*100 km)) could decrease up to 30% compared with con-ventional pelletization ($ 0.4/(GJ*100 km)) (Table 3). Thus, the TOPprocess offers benefits to biomass logistics.

.2.2. Cost estimate for torrefaction processThe economic analysis was conducted on the basis of total feed-

tock cost ($/ton feedstock). The capital cost was evaluated using capacity-factored estimation and according to previous torrefac-ion studies (Bergman et al., 2005). For the costs of installation,epreciation, and financing, the estimation was related to capital

nvestment. This study also used a factorial method to catego-ize the breakdown list of production costs (Peters et al., 1968).or operation costs such as labor, maintenance, fuel gas, and utili-ies, the estimate was based on the capacity and the nature of therocessing plant.

As mentioned in the Section 1, CRP biomass grows in differenttates and yields over 10 million tons of biomass for bioprocessingabout 1/5 of total amount) after leaving most of the biomass forand conservation. Multiple torrefaction plants are expected in dif-erent CRP sections. The cost estimation was based on a torrefactionlant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons with an operationindow of 6 months per year. The daily processing capacity for

ncoming feedstock is about 600 tons, and the useful life of the plantas assumed to be 20 years. The total processing costs comprise

apital costs and operation costs. The direct capital cost was esti-ated at $8 million, include plant construction, equipment costs,

nd installation but excluding engineering management costs (Uslut al., 2008). The finance costs were set to an annual interest of 8%,hich was calculated as about $1.6 per ton of feedstock. The total

apital cost was calculated as $6.6 per ton of feedstock.Operation costs include energy, labor, management, mainte-

ance, etc. Cost of feedstock was not included in the operation cost.he energy cost was calculated from the energy input of the unitrocess and a recent gas fuel price ($3.8/GJ) (USEIA, 2013). Laborost was calculated on an hourly rate of $20 and 6 months/year,hich is $2 per ton. Considering a depreciation period of 10 years,

he cost of depreciation was calculated as $5.5 per ton. (Otheretails are in Table 3.) The total operation cost was calculated as9.7 per ton. Total unit costs of torrefaction are $16.3 per ton ofeedstock, which is equal to about $23 per ton of torrefied biomass.ote that the operation cost was estimated assuming that the CRPiomass contains no more than 20% MC. If the CRP biomass wereot dried before torrefaction, operation and capital costs would

.2.3. Comparison of torrefaction with other processesThe torrefaction process provides not only an upgrade of

iomass quality but also great economic potential for the wholeiomass supply chain. Economic analysis was performed to com-are three biomass processing units: Torrefaction, pelletization,nd a combined unit of torrefaction and pelletization (TOP). Beforeiomass pelletization, an energy-consuming grinding process is

ecessary. The grinding energy of torrefied wood chips could beeduced to as low as 24 kW h/t (at torrefaction temperature of00 ◦C), which is about 1/10 of the energy needed for grinding ofaw biomass (Phanphanich and Mani, 2011). The decrease in energy

requirements occurs because torrefaction reduces biomass parti-cle size and renders biomass more brittle (Medic et al., 2012) andbecause the hammer mills used in conventional pelletization can bereplaced by a simple cutting mill (Arias et al., 2008). The cost savingswere calculated as about $3–10 per ton depending on the grindingscale and energy source. In addition, torrefaction could benefit thepelletization process. A previous study suggested that pelletizationof torrefied biomass saved about 20% of the energy required forconventional pelletization by increasing energy efficiency (Thekand Obernberger, 2004). Economic evaluations of three biomass-processing techniques are performed and compared in Table 3. Theinitial capital costs for a biomass plant with an annual capacityof 100,000 tons were estimated as $8 million, $7 million, and $10million for torrefaction, pelletization, and TOP plant, respectively.The data for pelletization were based on previous study (Thek andObernberger, 2004) and were normalized to the same scale as thisstudy for comparison. Construction and management costs wereestimated on the scale of capital volume.

Besides saving production cost, further analysis showed that thebiomass upgrade could reduce the cost of transportation. Althoughthe bulk density of torrefied biomass does not increase significantly,the increase in energy density could decrease transportation costbased on units of energy value. A previous study suggested thatthe average transportation cost of agricultural biomass by truck isabout $1/(GJ*100 km) (Searcy et al., 2007). Combined with pelleti-

. Conclusions

CRP biomass has potential to be sustainably used for bioen-rgy production. Biomass torrefaction upgrades biomass propertiesy increasing energy density, reducing MC, reducing particle size,

ncreasing hydrophobicity, and increasing brittleness for easierrinding. The study on biomass composition, especially poly-er composition, suggested that the polysaccharides in biomassere converted to other high-carbon-content materials. Preser-

ing energy content (e.g., cellulose and lignin) and polysaccharideontent (e.g., cellulose and xylan) in biomass during torrefactions suggested. The economic evaluation indicated that costs of theorrefaction process were about $16.3 per ton of feedstock (or $23er ton of product). A comparison of torrefaction and pelletizationhowed that the combined TOP process could benefit the biomassupply chain by upgraded biomass quality and reduced processinge.g., grinding), storage, and transportation costs.
