TOPIC: Locomotive Systems Aim: Explain the parts and functions of

the skeletal system.

Do Now- Explain advantages of locomotion.

HW: Read pages 487-489. Write recall notes about what joints are and the different types of joints. Due tomorrow!

• The smallest is the stirrup bone in the ear which can measure 1/10 of an inch.

Your face has 14 bones.

Page 4: TOPIC : Locomotive Systems Aim : Explain the parts and functions of the skeletal system

One fourth of your bones are located in your feet.

Page 5: TOPIC : Locomotive Systems Aim : Explain the parts and functions of the skeletal system

True or False: Children often bend their bones rather than break them.

TRUE! Their bones are more pliable, and tend to bend more without breaking.

3. Cartilage

•Flexible connective tissue

•Found:–at ends of bones for cushioning and protection

•Give shape to certain body parts(ears, nose)

Page 14: TOPIC : Locomotive Systems Aim : Explain the parts and functions of the skeletal system

Months before birth, the skeleton is made of cartilage. Gradually the cartilage breaks down and is replaced by bone. Cartilage is replaced slowly by bone as solid tissue grows outward. Over time, the

bone reshapes to include blood vessels, nerves, and marrow. Bone-forming cells deposit the minerals calcium and phosphorous in bones,

making the bone tissue hard.

Did You Know?

Humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks? A Giraffe’s

neck vertebrae are just much, much longer!

Page 44: TOPIC : Locomotive Systems Aim : Explain the parts and functions of the skeletal system

The only bone not broken so far during any ski accident is one located

in your inner ear.

If you break your wrist as an adult it will take you 8 weeks to

heal. A five year old child who

breaks their wrist only takes 3 weeks to heal.

Page 46: TOPIC : Locomotive Systems Aim : Explain the parts and functions of the skeletal system

Let’s summarize…

1. Identify structures that make up your skeletal system.

2. Describe the difference between tendons and ligaments.

3. Explain the function of cartilage.

4. Where is cartilage found?
