Patrick Jeski, Rally Sport Region President To prepare for this month’s column, I spent some time reviewing the columns I wrote last year. I thought it would be a good way to start the new year. A lot has changed, and a lot remains the same. One year ago, I asked you to consider participating more actively in our club. Well you certainly have! Participation in our social events has been up across the board. Turnout for our track events has been impressive to say the least. Not one club chair or board position remains vacant. I expect to see more improvement this year. In March last year, I wrote that I thought it had been a strange winter. I had no idea. I wonder what I’ll say about the current winter in my column this March? I also admitted my tendency to procrastinate in my preparations for the new season. This year I am doing better. The car is wintering in the shop, so there should be plenty of time to get everything done. Yet I can’t help but think there will be a scramble to get everything in order in the spring. In April, I was able to give you the dates for our DE events. This year, there should be more to tell. Check our web site (rsp.pca.org) in the coming weeks for details. September’s column focused on the political system in our club. This year is a presidential election year, so I think you will see the political columns start earlier. In the last election for Club President, I ran unopposed. Even so, I won by the narrowest margin. I hope this year we will have a real contest. There will be board positions to fill, and committees will need fresh membership to provide the kind of drive that has made this year such a success for the club. In November I lamented the early end of the summer and the particularly cool start to the fall.

Again, if I only knew! Now the reprieve is over and we have to face winter. How bad can it be, with the days getting longer and spring approaching? I do seem to write about the weather quite a bit. (I never seem to do anything about it, though!) Given the nature of our club’s activities, it’s an important subject. The Holiday Party was a smashing success. The Oak Pointe Country Club provided a quiet setting and a delicious meal. Turnout was very strong, with somewhere in the neighborhood of sixty attendees. After dinner, our Events Committee took a few minutes to outline the coming year’s event schedule. We are looking for help with a few events that still need hosts. See the details elsewhere in this issue and check the web site often to see where your efforts can benefit our club. It’s going to be a great year for events, both on and off the track.

Both the Bahn Stormer and the board have had a nice holiday break. Now it’s time to get back on the gas. Our next board meeting is Thursday, February 1, at Ginopolis on the Ice. We generally get there by 7:00pm. I hope to see you there. Patrick

Well the events just get better and better. Nearly 60 turned out for the holi-day party at Oak Pointe Country Club and a great time was had by all. This event kicked off a year of great events as highlighted on page 9. If you missed the Holiday Party be sure and join the next event -- you don’t want to miss the fun. Just a few of the smiling faces are shown on this page. You can’t come to an event without being caught by the club’s paparazzi -- Sally Free.

Are you tired of the cold weather? Do you want to feel the warm days of summer again?

Did you have a great time at this party last year?

If you answered ”yes” to any of these, then it’s time to visit the warm Carib-bean again. Come to a tropical paradise with warm breezes, swaying palm trees, and Caribbean cuisine (provided by RSR’s chef Lori Shepard). Wear your Hawai-ian shirt and sandals and escape to the “islands” for a while.

See you there, Mon!

Mediterrano succeeds because of its focus on the cuisine of the Mediterranean region. From the South of France to Greece, from Spain to North Africa, Mediterrano's menu moves effortlessly from country to country, combining the best ideas of each region to create old world dishes with an exciting new flair.

New Year’s Resolutions 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes

age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning and keep active. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, Por-sches, …whatever. Get up and get out. Play cards, take a tour, see friends, volunteer, … it doesn’t matter what as long as it’s something. Never let the brain or the body get idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop," and the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things. When the children are young, that is all that you can afford. When they are in college, that is all that you can af-ford. When you are on retirement, that is all that you can afford!

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive laughter.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be alive while you are alive, don't put out a mailbox on the highway of death and just wait in residence for your mail.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, friends, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, Porsches … whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country, a PCA event, but not to guilt country.

10. Tell the people you love, that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER -- Life is not meas-

ured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Von Braun – We now review our current projekt’s status, the replacement of the KE-jetronic injection system on the Gruppe’s 1988 911 Turbo. What is the status? Huzel – Well, we have removed the KE-jetronic fuel distributor. There it sits like a spider on the ga-rage floor. Kind of sad to see the old warrior re-tired, don’t you think? Debus – No, I don’t think so. That crusty piece of technology has served long past its prime. The type 930 should never have been re-introduced to Amer-ica with it in 1986. Good riddance. Von Braun – Ah Debus, always so sentimental. OK, what else has been done? Debus – I have taken the intake manifold, fuel rails and injector mounts and used them to develop the new fuel plumbing. Huzel – What is being done to regulate the fuel pressure? Debus – I have purchased an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator. It features the necessary mani-fold referenced pressure regulation feature so that correct fuel pressure can be maintained between

the fuel rail and the intake manifold at all times, even under boost. Von Braun – How about the fuel hoses? Debus – I have selected a nylon-sheathed syn-thetic rubber hose with an imbedded textile braid-ing. It has a maximum pressure rating of 23 bar, and a satisfactory temperature range of -40 to 250 C. Von Braun – What about the fittings? Debus – I have selected Aeroquip aluminum swivel fittings in the AN -6 size. This can flow enough fuel to support over 800 HP. Huzel – The lines from the tank and the fuel pumps are more restrictive than that. They are probably good for only 450 HP or so. Debus – This is true. The Porsche lines are also difficult to adapt to. They are all made by Cohline in Germany. I have not been able to find a US dis-tributor for Cohline, so I had to weld some pieces together to adapt the AN style fittings to the Coh-line fitting on the return line to the fuel tank. Von Braun – OK, let’s have a look at what you have done. Huzel – Here is the engine compartment. As you can see, we will have to decide what to do about the K-Jetronic wiring harness, remove it, or leave it in place. Von Braun – Definitely remove it. It is still flexible and intact. They already sell for over $1200, and Porsche will not continue to stock them forever. Huzel – Ok then. In that case we will have to re-move the alternator to get at the alternator connec-tions.

If all cars were driven in a straight line you would not need a differential. When a car makes a turn the outer wheel turns faster than the inner wheel. On drive axles this is compensated by the differential. There are many types of differentials, but we are going to talk about the three most com-mon.

The most common differential is the open-type, or conventional, which distributes equal amount of torque to each of the drive wheels. When one wheel slips the other cannot deliver torque.

Another type is the torque-biasing differ-ential, which is a gear driven differential. The amount of lock-up increases as the amount of

torque increases as long as both tires are planted firmly on the ground. It does not provide any lock-up if a drive wheel is off the ground making this ideal for a street or autocross situation.

Last, the limited slip differential works with preloaded clutch packs. It provides lock-up on both acceleration and deceleration and still per-forms well with the tire off the ground making it ideal for street and track use.

A good differential will provide better cor-nering and exit speed. If you choose to replace your differential because of wheel spin or exces-sive wear on your drive tires, make sure to choose the right diff for your application.

Until next issue, -Jeff

Dear Portia, The covers of Pano often feature close-ups of cars where it is hard to tell what I'm looking at. Why do they do this? Molly Myopia Dear MM, This condition is brought on by hubris and a dose of artsyfartsyism. The editors have been looking at too many copies of Vogue and Cosmo. As for your inability to understand the photo, Maybe you need to see the eye doctor. Don't drive at night with this condition. Dear Portia, This has been such a mild winter (as of early Jan.) that I am tempted to put the insurance back on the Por-sche and take it out for a run. What do you think? Anxious in Adrian Dear AiA, This is what's known in Michigan as the tease or bait and switch. As soon as you've committed to your insurance agent and take the car out we will get a blizzard of Denver magnitude. Not to sound like a pessimist but whenever you plan something around a Porsche that involves weather Murphy will show up right on schedule. Dear Portia, Life seems to be so complicated. What can I do to simplify and reduce stress? Tense in Taylor Dear TiT, There are a number of things you can do to achieve inner peace. First, if you have any teenage children sell the varmints. Then use the cash bonus to buy a GT3. Quit your job and spend the winter in Grand Cayman. Portia will take care of the GT3 while you are gone. Lastly, quit worrying about the Dow, trans fats, and how to pro-gram your iPod. Enjoy yourself Sweetie.

Healthy Spaghetti with Turkey Meat Balls --- Just try it.

(Courtesy of Arnie Spieker) Ingredients - Meat Balls: 1 1/4 lb. ground turkey 2 slices stale bread coarsely chopped (soaked in milk for 5 minutes) 1/2 cup golden raisins (soak in water for 10 minutes) 1/3 cup pine nuts (toasted in a dry pan) 2 eggs beaten 1 Tbs. porcini powder (ground dry porcini mushrooms) 3 Tbs. chopped parsley Salt and pepper to taste Ingredients - Sauce: 3 medium onions (Quartered) 1 ½ Stalks Celery (Cut into 1 inch pieces) 1 ½ Carrots (Cut into 1 inch pieces) Chop the above fine in a food processor or by hand, must be very fine 3 Tbs. olive oil 1 Tbs. tomato paste 42 oz. of whole or diced canned tomatoes 1 1/2 C chicken or vegetable broth 1 stick cinnamon 2 bay leaves ½ to 1 tsp red pepper flakes Salt to taste

Preparing the Sauce: Gently sauté vegetables in olive oil with a bit of salt for 5 minutes (don’t brown) in a large heavy bottom pot like a Dutch oven Pull mixture to the side to make a hot spot and sauté the tomato paste for 1 minute and then mix together. Add red pepper. Run the tomatoes and the liquid through a food mill (or purée in a food processor) and add to pot. Bring to a simmer and cook while you make the meat-balls. Preparing the Meatballs: Squeeze the Bread of excess milk and tear up, drain the raisins and mix all ingredients together in a large bowl using your nice clean hands. Form into golf ball size meatballs (1.680 inches in diame-ter, a measuring tool is available at most golf shops or on eBay… ) Dust lightly with flour and fry in oil until light brown. (NOT until they are cooked through) Add the meat balls to the sauce and allow to simmer to minimum of 20 minutes. Finishing Touches: Cook Pasta to al dente In a separate large sauté pan over gentle heat, add ap-proximate 2-3 cups of the sauce and mix with pasta and good fresh Parmesan cheese to taste. Serve in large heated bowl with meatballs around the edge with a little extra sauce and cheese over the top. Don’t over sauce… Enjoy!

From the Editor -- Change!

As a child I ate Cheerios until I was 12, at which time I switched to Kix until I was adult. My haircut has been unchanged since 1967. For my entire life a shirt without a button-down collar is not a shirt I would buy. All of this is to say, I’m not big on change. But, the next issue of the Bahn Stormer will have a new look. A new computer and new software force a change. I’ll start from scratch on the next issue with no template. So look for a few changes and per-haps a few problems. Wish me luck. I hope I’ve not bitten off more than I can chew. May the “force” be with me.

Debus – Might as well. We would probably have to do that anyway to mount the cylinder head tem-perature sensor in a suitable location. Huzel – I have parts of an old 1984 911 Carrera harness that we can use to make a new alterna-tor/starter harness for this project.

Von Braun – That will be useful. The new fuel sys-tem plumbing looks ser gut Debus. Good clear-ance from the luft ventil and air conditioning Kom-pressor, and no modifications of any kind are re-quired to the intake manifold.

Huzel – Yes, very nice. Well, I am going to start on pulling the alternator out. Von Braun – I will start on the new wiring harness components. (To Be Continued - Editor)
