Teece Musem

This month the Teece Museum has hosted visits from Rangi Ruru College, Hagley College, Linwood College and St Anne’s Primary. It’s great to be able to welcome new schools, as well as seeing familiar classes returning. Schools are picking up on the opportunity to use the museum as an educational experience outside the classroom in conjunction with visits to other CBD providers such as the Christchurch Art Gallery, Rutherford’s Den and the Canterbury Museum – we’re in good company. October will be a busy month of public engagement activities at the Teece, including events for Heritage Week, Festa 2018, and a family fun night out for Halloween. We will also have another of our ‘world’ famous mini-figure hunts in the gallery over the school holidays – the theme these holidays is ‘Wee Women at Work’, as a celebration of 125 years of Women’s Suffrage in NZ. The prize pack includes some great books from UBS. Keep an eye on the Arts Update for more information on these events, or you can find the listings on the Museum’s Facebook page and on the UC Events calendar. History MA student Elisabeth Rolston successfully completed her MA “Martin of Opava and the Treatment of Imperial History in Dominican Works of Compilation, c. 1250-1330”, which was awarded with distinction. The late-thirteenth century Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum of the Dominican friar Martin of Opava was one of the most popular and influential universal chronicles of the later Middle Ages. Despite its medieval popularity, the Chronicon’s concept of empire has received at best only cursory attention from scholars. It has a reputation for being derivative, unoriginal, and poorly written. This thesis examines Martin’s treatment of the character and conduct of Christian emperors and his interpretation of the empire’s role. It reveals that Martin’s Chronicon presents a carefully constructed vision of empire that was distinct from those of his Dominican brethren, and reflected a complex and developed understanding of the role of the emperor in Christendom. Furthermore, it sheds light on the transmission of political ideas within the Dominican Order’s encyclopaedic projects. It reveals the extent to which each friar's particular context influenced his vision of empire, demonstrating, in particular, that Martin’s Chronicon represents a valuable perspective within the Dominican historiographical tradition, one that reflects his unique background as a papal chaplain and penitentiary. Philosophy

On Tuesday, 18 September, Stephen Stich gave a philosophy research seminar on ‘Moral Sentimentalism and the Boundaries of Morality’. Prof. Stich is Board of Governors Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Center for Cognitive Science at Rutgers University, and currently an Erskine Fellow in the Department of Philosophy.

Special talk by a UC graduate working in Japan JAPA326 (Advancing Japanese) had a UC graduate, Jonathan Glassey, as a guest speaker. Graduating from UC in 2015 with a double major in Japanese and computer science, Jonathan is currently working at Shuttlerock in Tokyo, a company that was founded by Jonny Hendriksen (the 2014 Keynote Speaker for the NCEA Japanese workshop at UC). In Japanese, he talked about his encounters with Japanese, his learning experience at UC and how he got his current job in Japan. Jonathan went on an exchange to Bukyo University and participated in the Kyushu Japan Railway Internship program during his time at UC, and has obtained a N1 grade (the highest grade) in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. He is a wonderful role model, using his Japanese language skills and computer programming skills to develop his career.
