Term 1 Week 6 Wednesday 07 March 2018 Together We Grow GROWTH, RESPECT, OPPORTUNITY, WORTH Welcome to All Dear Parents/Guardians WELCOME BACK FAMILY PICNIC Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for the family picnic recently. It was great to see the students sharing lunch with their family members. EASTER HAT PARADE Our Annual Easter Hat Parade will be held at 9am in the covered assembly area on March 20 th . Students from all classes are invited to attend and of course are welcome to bring along their Easter hat / bonnet. Each class will have the opportunity to parade around the covered assembly area to some background music wearing their hats / bonnets. Parents and carers are welcome to attend. NB: this parade will be separate to the Room 8 assembly which will occur at 2pm on this day. NEW OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL IN 2019 I recently attended the Independent Public Schools Briefing Day on February 28 th along with Mrs Sue Claude (School Council Member) and Mrs Anderson (Deputy Principal). This day provided an outline of the development program and selection process which will run in Terms 2 and 3. Selected schools will then participate in a transition program in Term 4 in readiness to start the 2019 school year as Independent Public Schools. The development and selection process will be as rigorous as in previous years to ensure that selected schools are well placed to maximise the benefits of greater autonomy. The 2018 development program will focus on connections between autonomy, innovation and student success. NEW EARLY YEARS PLAYGROUND The garrison fencing for the Kindy / Pre- Primary playground is almost complete and work will commence shortly on the new playground upgrade for this area. I will keep you posted as the scope of works and timeframe become available from the contractor. NB: The planned main school courtyard upgrade will then be given further consideration after the completion of the early years playground. FOOD ALLERGIES A number of our students have allergies to foods such as peanuts and tree nuts. We would respectively ask that parents and carers for this reason DO NOT send nuts or nut products to school in lunch boxes. For this reason we also ask that food is NOT shared amongst other students. Please reinforce this message at home. Thank you. AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION A reminder to parents and carers that at the end of the school day we require all students to make their way home in a timely manner and ask that students do not stay to play on school grounds or equipment. School staff have meetings and commitments after hours and supervision of students in the playground in not provided. All students need to be collected by a responsible adult or make their way home straight after the siren has sounded. Your assistance in regard to this matter is very much appreciated. A reminder that Camp Australia offer after school care on site every day. Booking details are available online at: https://www.campaustralia.com.au/ BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast club is available every Monday & Thursday in our covered assembly area. Volunteers are most welcome. EARLY CLOSE MONDAY’S A reminder that our school closes at 2.30pm every Monday and at 3pm on all other school days. NEXT SCHOOL ASSEMBLY School assemblies will be on Tuesday’s again this year. Our next whole school assembly will be held on Tuesday 20 th March in the new covered assembly area and hosted by Room 8. Parents and Carers are most welcome to attend. OUTSTANDING NAPLAN DATA / STUDENT PROGRESS 2017 This week I received the following email from the CEO of ACARA – Robert Randall Dear Principal, I am pleased to advise that ACARA has identified your school as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in reading and/or numeracy achievement, as measured by NAPLAN. BUZ (Build Up Zone)

Is Your child A Healthy Weight? Did you know that more than a quarter of Western Australian school children are overweight? Many children at risk of being overweight do not look obviously large. As children move through puberty and into adulthood, being overweight often becomes more obvious and more difficult to manage. It is easier for children to move towards a healthy weight before puberty and adulthood. Help your child to introduce small, achievable, healthy habits every day. For some ideas, go to Raising Children website (http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/childhood_obesity.html). For fun ideas on how to support children and families to be more active outdoors go to Nature Play WA. It is important to avoid discussing weight with children. Weight loss and dieting is not recommended for children, unless under medical supervision. Healthy habits help children to ‘grow into their weight’.

As part of our Easter Celebration , we will be having an Easter Bonnet parade on Tuesday 20 March. The students will wear their bonnets for our special parade. Please ask your child or check with your class teacher if they are making a bonnet in the classroom or at home. Students are asked to bring the bonnets in on the morning of the parade. Parents and Carers are welcome to watch the grand parade from 9.00am in the new Undercover area. We very much look forward to seeing all the Easter Bonnet creations. Please be aware Room 8 will host the Assembly at 2pm on this day.

Last week we learnt:

*No feeling is permanent. *Other people don’t MAKE you angry – you get angry. You are responsible for your own feelings. *Don’t let your anger control you. *Don’t go to bed angry. *Buried or hidden feelings can fester and brew, giving them bad power: they expand – then they explode, fizz or ooze.

The Thornlie Primary School Chaplain is available for a confidential ‘chat’ with students, families and staff from the school community on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Appointments can be made through the school office on 9459 4333, or just drop in to Room 16.
