Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian commu-nity, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Chrism Mass On Monday, April 15, Bishop Zinkula will preside at the Chrism Mass at Sa-cred Heart Cathedral in Davenport at 2:30. This is the annual Mass at which

the holy oils used in the church for next year are blessed or consecrated. Also, priests renew their promises of service to the church. This is a beau-tiful liturgy and everyone is invited. It would be a great opportunity to see the wonderful work that has been done to improve the Cathedral Church of the Diocese through the Cathedral Sunday en-velopes we have used in recent years. This is a shift in the customary time of former years, which allows us from some distance to attend and still be home at a reasonable hours.

Confessions Confessions will be heard on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until all present are heard.

Holy Week

Passion of the Lord Saturday, April 13 at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 14 at 9:00 a.m. On this day the Church celebrates Christ's entrance into Jerusalem to a accomplish his paschal mystery. We gather to hear the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. We bless palm branches and carry them in procession to the church as we cry "Hosanna". Then

we hear the account of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday April 18th, 7 p.m. Mass The Mass of the Lord's Supper begins the Triduum, the three holiest days of the liturgical year. During this special liturgy the sacred oils received at the Chrism Mass in Davenport are presented to the faith community to be used throughout the coming year, feet are washed, the Eucharist is transferred to a place of adoration in the chapel of ease, and the altar of sacrifice is stripped in preparation for Good Friday.

Good Friday April 19th, 7 p.m. Celebration of the Lord's Passion Good Friday is the most somber day of the Church year. The altar is bare. We come to hear the Passion Story from John's gospel and to venerate the Cross of Christ.

Easter Vigil Saturday, April 20th, 8:15 p.m. This evening our faith community gathers to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection, the greatest celebration of the church year. The evening consist of lighting a fire,

proclaiming the story of salvation through several scripture readings, blessing the waters used for Baptism, and lighting our parish Easter candle, and renewing our Baptism promises. The celebration usually lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Easter Sunday April 21st, 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Mass

Vision 20/20 Let us try a little harder to take the first step and to become involved. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The Lord gets involved and he involves his own, as he kneels to wash their feet. He tells his disciples: “You will be blessed if you do this” (Jn 13:17)… Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice. — Pope Francis, the Joy of the Gospel: Evangelii Gaudium

During Lent, Sacred Heart is excited to bring daily reflections to our parish community. Each day dur-ing Lent, we will share a reflection written by one of our parishioners at Sacred Heart. Reading stories of faith from a diverse group of voices is a great way to grow this Lenten season. How it works is the reflec-tions will be posted each day on Instagram (@shcnewton), Facebook (@Sacred Heart Catholic Church), and by email. If you would like to receive the reflections by email, you can sign-up on the sheet in the gathering space or by sending your email

address to [email protected]. If you want to view the reflections on paper, hard copies from the week will be available after Masses in the gathering space. We hope you will join us on this exciting Lenten journey!

Today’s Gospel from Luke includes a detail that not all the Gospel writer’s include when relating the encounter of Jesus with the chief priests and the temple guards in the garden of Gethsemane. “Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.” The inclusion of this detail has always struck me as an important teaching of our faith. It is an incredible act of compassion at a time when Jesus is already sweating blood knowing that he is starting a journey of excruciating suffering and bodily death. And yet, he finds a way to heal those around him through his love and care, even for those who plan to harm him. How many times in my life have I had an opportunity to be compassionate to others and yet I can’t be bothered to do so or I let human logic persuades me that the other person does not deserve my compas-sion. Jesus calls us to follow in his footsteps and show compassion at all times to all people even when faced with extraordinary circumstances. Today, I challenge you to let go of your human reasons not to be compas-sionate and follow Jesus in showing love and care for all. In doing so, you live the faith of our Lord and His church. — Kim Didier

This weekend is Palm Sunday, and Holy

Week is upon us. How are you doing filling

your rice bowl? No doubt there have been

opportunities to simplify meals in order to

give to those in need. Here is a another simple

recipe that will allow your family to reflect on the many bless-

ings God has provided, and then give something back. While

enjoying this simple meal, reflect on this thought provoking

question. Think about a time when you were really hungry. How

did you feel? Have you ever thought about what it would be like

to not have for food for days? How can our family continue to

help feed the hungry?

Sante Fe Stuffed Potatoes 4 medium potatoes

1 cup black beans (rinsed and drained)

1 cup salsa

1 cup corn (canned or frozen)

1 cup cheese, shredded

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Scrub potatoes and prick with a

fork. Bake for one hour or until cooked through. Stir together

beans, salsa and corn in saucepan about 10 minutes before the

potatoes are done. Heat over medium heat until simmering. Re-

move potatoes from oven and cut in half lengthwise on plates.

Spoon bean mixture over the top of each potato, and sprinkle

with ¼ cup shredded cheese. Serve with fruit and milk.

“Come to the Table”

Thanks to Al & Jeanne Conover Of Blue Ribbon Cafe

for being a bulletin sponsor.

Rice Bowls There is a receptacle

in the gathering space for your Rice Bowls with

the money you have been collecting all Lent. Currency is lighter to carry and faster to count than coins.

Facing Grief at Easter There is no more important weekend in all of Christi-

anity than Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter

Sunday. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is

the foundation of our faith, our hope, our joy, indeed

our entire existence. And it’s the weekend we remember and celebrate that reality. It is the weekend that is

especially poignant for someone grieving in the aftermath of recently losing a loved one or experiencing a re-

awakening of memories of someone who departed months or even years ago. For those caught up in the emo-

tions of grief (pain, sense of loss, or confusion) it may to hard to feel joy in the in midst of all that.

The nagging question at Easter might be, “What does this spiritual

season have to say to me in the midst of my troubles?” The answer

can be found in the image of the stone on Easter morning being

rolled away and Jesus coming forth in all his glory. The visual of an

empty tomb and a Jesus who is alive can be a source of comfort be-

cause his resurrection is a reminder that death is an enemy, but as

Paul wrote, “the last enemy that will be destroyed.” (1 Corinthians 15:26)

Jesus destroyed his own death and reassures us, “I am the resurrection

and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever

lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11: 25-26) Our human minds wrestle with what that means. Theologi-

ans discuss the particulars of the state of man in death, where they are now, and what will happen at the end of

time. And just as with all our Why questions, we may never have satisfying answers this side of heaven, which

is OK because we don’t have to intellectually understand it all. It is enough to know that death, painful at it is

for those of us who are here, is not the end of the story. It is temporary! Easter means that the end of the

story is LIFE – forever. Because JESUS IS LIFE – now, and eternally.

In Case of Weather Emergency

We are now in April which in Iowa is frequently a month of spring storms, especially tornados. Please be aware that in the event of a weather emergency you may seek shelter in the church basement, which may be entered by stairs just south of the restrooms south of the nurs-ery, or through the utility room in McCann Center. If there is a need to leave the building, remember that there are two emergency exits behind the sanc-tuary in the church.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In the prelude to today’s great Passion Narrative, Saint Paul reminds us that we find our hope in the “emptiness” and “humility” of Christ Jesus; a life that led to the cross, but through the cross, to glory and exaltation. The way is not easy. Good stewards know that it requires a willingness to lay aside all rights of personal privilege; emptying ourselves in the service of others; embracing values different from the values of the world. It requires an understanding that to be “in Christ” means to be a servant because Christ came into the world, not as Lord but as servant. What crosses are we willing to carry? What worldly values are we willing to forego in order to share Christ’s glory?

Walk for Life “Before I formed you in the womb I knew

you, before you were born I dedicated you..” Jeremiah 1:5

The Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa is hosting their annual Walk for Life on Saturday May 4th at 9:00 AM

starting at the Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa, 709 1st Ave. W. The Pregnancy Center is a local non-profit agency that provides free services to women during their pregnancy, as well as support after they have their baby. They provide counseling, post abortion coun-seling, parenting classes and material support where needed. They are there to provide loving support to women who might consider abortion as their only other option. This is only one of two fundraisers held annually.

You can help in one of three ways:

First: COME AND WALK! First and foremost we want walkers. By just coming to walk you can be a witness to the sanctity of human life, a witness to the fact that all life is precious in God’s eyes.

Second: Be a sponsor for the walk. Sign up to be a sponsor and collect pledges from family and friends. Many people are more than willing to donate a small amount to support this worthwhile cause. If you would like a sponsor sheet please contact Lee Mangrich at 641-831-9645.

Third: Pledge to a walker. There will be sign-up sheets in the back of church for anyone who wishes to support a walker. Any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreci-ated.

If you choose to be a sponsor please come to the Pregnancy Center with your sponsor sheet by 8:30 for registration. The walk will go on, rain or shine, so please pray for shine.

I was recently diagnosed with can-

cer. When I think about death now,

I get scared. The crucifixion and

death of Jesus, surrounded by dark

skies, earthquakes, and opening

tombs, adds to my fright. Any words

of encouragement?

Transitions in life are always a bit frightening, and the transition of our dying and rising can be the scariest of them all. When we were tiny infants in our mother’s womb, we transitioned into life. We were not conscious of what we were doing, and so we were not scared. We were in God’s hands. And God, who creates all life, brought us to be born and live. The same challenge faces you now as when you were in the womb. Even though you are conscious of your sickness and your possible death, you are still asked to leave it all in the hands of God. God, who brought you to life, will travel with you through your dying and into the kingdom. Jesus certainly showed us how to do this with his prayer during his crucifixion: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46). People who have had near-death experi-ences do not talk about how scary and frighten-ing it was. In fact, they speak about how peace-ful and full of light the journey was for them. Most hated the idea of “returning” to their sick bodies. This same journey of peace and light, and the sense of God’s close presence to you, can be yours in your last moments here. Trust in God. Commend your spirit to God’s care. God loves you! God will keep you safe and lead you home!

Question: It seems to me that there are so many “symbolic” things going on during the Consecration at Mass. Can you help me see how all the pieces fit together?

First of all, the Church does not use the word “symbolic” to describe either what Catholics believe or any of the things that occur during the Consecra-tion at Mass. Other faiths present their bread and wine as symbols, but the Catholic Church does not.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the latter part of the Mass that includes the presentation of the bread and wine, the consecration and communion. At the time of the Consecration when the priest repeats Christ’s words from the Last Supper, the substances of the bread and wine are sacramentally changed into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ.

The Church teaches and we believe in the Real Presence of Christ; i.e., that the substance of Christ, including both His human and Divine natures, is really and truly present in the Holy Eucharist, even though the two species still look and taste like bread and wine. We believe these things because Christ Himself told us so when He celebrated with the Apostles on that first Holy Thursday.

Prayer Holy Spirit, help me to be worthy of receiving Christ in the Eucharist.

Our Call to Face Down Evil We come to the holiest week of the year. This week, Christians around the world dedicate their minds and hearts to meditate on the great gift of the redemption won for them by Christ. It is a cosmic event that happened 2,000 years ago but it bears fruit today in the heart of every Christian in every continent, country, city, and home. Max Ernst’s 1914 painting, Crucifixion, shows this event in cosmic, timeless dimension by placing the crucified Christ in a dark, tumultuous, and formless setting. The sinister colors of blue, brown, yellow, and black seem to hide a face or perhaps a masked and darkened eye on the right that peers through the evil canvas. As chaotic and nonsensical as evil appears in our world, it also seems to have a commonality that betrays a will or an intelligence hidden beneath the surface. The suffering and de-struction of so many people from senseless violence, famine, and hatred seems at once both spontaneous, yet strangely or-chestrated by some force. The same was true for Christ’s crucifixion. On the sur-face it appears the result of a feverish crowd, a confused politi-

cian, a jealous and blinded religious leadership, and an overwhelmed group of cowardly followers. Yet we perceive the return of the tempter, Lucifer, the author of the non serviam. The power of evil that struck the head continues to strike the body. Be aware of the call for all followers of Jesus to be ready to face the same struggle against evil that he did, and with the same measure of love.
